2 STATEMENT OF NEED: Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) refers to a variety of diagnoses including Traumatic Brain Injury, Stroke/Aneurysm, Brain Tumor, Anoxia, and Encephalitis that can lead to a multitude of neuro-cognitive, physical, and psychosocial challenges. This program will review current research and evidence based practice that supports the interdisciplinary, integrative approach to the treatment of ABI. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: All North Shore-LIJ Health System continuing education activities are designed to improve patient care, safety and outcomes. At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to: DESCRIBE factors linked to caregiver distress and review constructive coping strategies to address family/client communication challenges. RECOGNIZE the symptoms of depression in individuals with acquired brain injury and understand the multifactorial approach to treatment. REVIEW barriers to proper self care in the caregiver, describe stress management techniques, and discuss community and health system resources for caregivers. UNDERSTAND the importance of creating ongoing opportunities for creative self expression and social leisure involvement for long term wellness. Discuss how to utilize creative expression as a means to motivate and inspire survivors of acquired brain injuries. EXPLAIN the roles of the frontal lobes in executive and emotional functioning, understand the symptoms of executive dysfunction, and to present a helpful approach to problem solving. IDENTIFY treatment approaches to managing spasticity in the inpatient population and review basic concepts in the management of spasticity in outpatient care and at home. DESCRIBE mirror therapy and evidence supporting it as a modality. Identify interdisciplinary goals and protocols for a mirror therapy program. Participants will receive a certificate at the completion of the conference for 4.8 contact hours. Occupational Therapists: North Shore-LIJ Health System Rehabilitation Network is a NBCOT Professional Development Provider contact hours. Speech-Language Pathologists: This introductory course is offered for.4 ASHA CEUs (Basic Level, Professional Area).
