2 Activity Information Course Description According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), about 2.5 million emergency department (ED) visits, hospitalizations, or deaths were associated with Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in the United States (2010). Every day, about 138 people die from injuries that include TBI. Those who survive suffer from disabling conditions that affect their quality of life. Current issues with plotting the trajectories of these specific patients recoveries, coupled with practicing within an environment that demands total complex patient management with an attention to detail is the focus of this one day conference. A discussion on the pathophysiology of brain injury and the management of concussion will provide a basic review of the topic. Other discussions will center around management of behavioral and sensory impairments, as well as linking the participant with novel treatment approaches. Formal presentations will be accompanied by question and answer periods with general discussion. Target Audience This educational activity is intended for: Physical Medicine physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical, occupational and speech therapists as well as other clinicians involved in the treatment of patients with brain injury. Course Objectives Discuss an optimal approach to motor recovery after brain injury Implement novel approaches/techniques to influence physiological and functional outcomes using most recent, evidence-based techniques Describe 3 examples of accessible personal technology available in the current market to integrate into the treatment and/or rehabilitation of the person with a brain injury State the compensatory strategies to increase cognitive functioning after TBI Identify the current assessment and management techniques of symptoms resulting from concussion /TBI and appropriately integrate these techniques in the care of patients Accreditation Statement Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Credit Designation Statement Cedars-Sinai Medical Center designates this live educational activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses The California State Board of Registered Nursing accepts courses approved by the ACCME for category 1 credit as meeting the educational requirements for license renewal.
