1 Neurological Center for Pain in joint sponsorship with the Ohio Headache Association and Ohio Neurotoxin Association Present Neurotoxin and Headache Update October 11-12, 2013
2 Neurotoxin and Headache Update About the Course On Friday, October 11, we will have an evening program that will provide scientific, clinical and billing updates for therapeutic uses of botulinum toxins. On Saturday, October 12, we will have a full day course that will focus on the causes and comorbidities of chronic headaches and address the techniques used to confront these issues in a multidisciplinary fashion. Approximately 12% of the population in North America and Europe suffer from migraine headaches, and recent estimates now suggest that, worldwide, 2-4% of all adults suffer from chronic headaches. Chronic daily headaches are defined as headaches occurring more than 15 days a month for three or more consecutive months. These headaches exact a significant toll in the workplace and at home and are responsible for billions of dollars in health costs and lost productivity each year. While medicines have been developed to treat migraines acutely, there are few medications available for their prevention, and this pressing need extends to the treatment of chronic migraines, too. The one exception to this is the relatively recent introduction of onabolutlinum A toxin. For such a worldwide problem as chronic headaches, this therapeutic deficiency highlights an important issue: significant psychosocial co-morbidities accompanying chronic headaches are all too often ignored and disregarded by clinicians. And chronic pain of any type engenders significant suffering for patients and family, alike. This fact is a major issue in mental health and presents us with an opportunity to address patients chronic headache problems in a more holistic and mechanistically functional way. Target Audience This course is intended for physicians in the field of neurology, internal medicine, family practice, otolaryngology, gynecology, rheumatology, psychiatry, as well as psychologists, mid-level providers, nurses and other medical professionals. Objectives Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to: Describe the structure of botulinum neurotoxins Identify the botulinum serotypes approved by the FDA for clinical use Explain the role of botulinum neurotoxin as a treatment option for dystonia and painful conditions, in order to optimize patient outcomes Summarize the scientific data on the properties of botulinum toxin, as well as the clinical data on the efficacy of the toxin in treating multiple medical conditions Recognize the psychosocial variables in pain Identify co-morbidities that predict chronic migraines Facilitate development of interdisciplinary or multidisciplinary pain therapy
