The curriculum is grounded in evidence-based practice when appropriate as well as based on the collective clinical experience of our staff. RIC Academy courses are taught by interdisciplinary teams of recognized specialists from RIC and visiting experts from across the country and around the world. DESCRIPTION Current research in neuroscience, motor learning and cognitive function has added new dimensions in our understanding and management of stroke. This course will sharpen your knowledge by focusing on the latest research and clinical advances that have impacted the treatment of stroke. We will link novel discoveries and their practical applications in order to help participants improve their practice. The keynote speakers will discuss the direction and future of stroke rehabilitation as well as pharmacological interventions in the management of stroke with emphasis on cognition and depression. Lectures and workshops will address the impact of sleep on learning, the importance of intensity of treatment on outcomes, management of upper and lower extremity function, pusher syndrome, vision therapy, supported conversation for aphasia, updates in dysphagia and family adaptation after stroke. These will provide participants with both the theoretical and practical advances in the rehabilitation of stroke in order to stay on the cutting edge of care. Harvey, MD Medical Director, Stroke Rehabilitation, Wesley & Suzanne Dixon Stroke Chair, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago; Associate Professor, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine GUEST FACULTY Keynote Speaker: Sandra Black, MD, FRCP(C) Dr. Black is an internationally renowned cognitive and stroke neurologist who holds the inaugural Brill Chair in Neurology, Department of Medicine, University of Toronto and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. A leading clinical trialist in dementia, she is the current Executive Director of the Toronto Dementia Research Alliance. She is the Sunnybrook site director of the Heart & Stroke Foundation Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery and the Brain Sciences Research Program Director at Sunnybrook Research Institute. She has authored/ co-authored over 430 papers in a 30-year research career that has bridged dementia and stroke, with a recent focus on interactions of small vessel disease and Alzheimer s disease. She has earned several mentorship and research awards, including election to the Royal Society of Canada, cited for combining enormous dedication to patients with cutting-edge science. In 2011 she was named to the Order of Ontario. Michael Zost, OD, FCOVD, FAAO Doctor of Optometry; Associate Professor of Optometry at the Illinois College of Optometry FACULTY FROM THE REHABIITATION INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO AND NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY FK Keynote Speaker: Richard L. Harvey, MD Dr. Harvey had research training as a research fellow at RIC and Northwestern University and participated in the Rehabilitation Medicine Scientist Training Program sponsored by the National Institutes of Health and the Association of Academic Physiatrists. He was the winner of the Sarah Baskin Award for Excellence in Research in 1994, the Mentor of the Year Award in 2006, and The Golden Apple award for excellence in resident teaching in His research focuses on novel approaches to task oriented therapy and the role of neuromodulation as an adjunct to movement recovery after stroke. He has just completed work on the ContraStim Stoke Study examining the use of navigated brain stimulation as an adjunct to task oriented therapy in the recovery of upper limb function after stroke. He is now the lead investigator of the NICHE Multicenter Trial on navigated brain stimulation for stroke recovery. He also has additional research interest in the use of robotics for arm recovery after stroke, pain management after stroke and the treatment of limb spasticity for both arm and leg. Dr. Harvey is co-editor of the textbook Stroke Recovery and Rehabilitation. He is past Chairman of the Stroke and Neurological Diseases special interest group of the Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
