2 Jointly Provided by The Department of Internal Medicine and the Office of Continuing Medical Education of The Brody School of Medicine, East Carolina University and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy In association with the Eastern Area Health Education Center Lung cancer is the second most common cancer among men and women in the United States but the leading cause of mortality in both. It is estimated in the US there will be 221,200 new cases of lung cancer in 2015 with 7,750 of those in North Carolina and 158,040 US deaths with 8,740 in NC. Nationally lung cancer accounts for 13% of new cancer diagnoses and 27% of all cancer deaths. Patients frequently present to their primary care providers with cough, malaise, or an incidental pulmonary nodule seen on radiography; all of which can be early signs and symptoms of lung cancer. It is the primary care provider who has to distinguish what does and does not require immediate attention. This conference is aimed to provide the most current and practical information on the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of lung cancer. Designed to help you understand the options that are available for all patients, both surgical and nonsurgical, this conference will address dilemmas faced by the primary care provider for lung cancer treatment. This information will not only enable the primary care provider to become part of the treatment team but will help in providing earlier treatment for patients. Lectures and discussion periods will offer opportunities for both formal and informal exchanges between faculty and participants, and a comprehensive course e-syllabus will provide useful information and references for future practice. TARGET AUDIENCE This conference has been planned for Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacists and Physician Assistants, particularly those in the fields of Primary Care, Family Medicine, Pulmonary, and Oncology. ACCREDITATION: This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CREDIT: The Brody School of Medicine of East Carolina University designates this live activity for a maximum of 7 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only those credits commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. CONTACT HOURS: Certificates reflecting 7 contact hours of education will be awarded at the completion of the program. PHARMACISTS: This program, ACPE # L01-P will provide 5.75 contact hours of continuing pharmacy education credit for full-program participation. 3 COURSE CONTENT Upon completion of this knowledge-based program the participant should be able to integrate new developments in the following areas into practice: THE OUTCOME PLATEAU IN STAGE III LUNG CANCER TIME FOR A NEW STRATEGY Review the standard concurrent chemotherapy and radiation therapy (CRT) treatment strategies in stage III lung cancer Outline the local and distant disease control limitations of standard concurrent CRT Discuss a new strategy of treating stage III lung cancer with ablative and immune modalities LUNG CANCER SCREENING AN UPDATE Explore the evidence to support lung cancer screening Review the methods used for lung cancer screening Discuss who should be screened for lung cancer and the new CMS requirements LUNG ADENOCARCINOMA; THE NEW WHO CLASSIFICATION Survey available diagnostic and prognostic molecular testing for pulmonary adenocarcinoma and discuss issues with specimen adequacy Highlight recent updates in the epidemiology of pulmonary adenocarcinoma with emphasis on the population of young female never smokers STAGE I LUNG CANCER IN MEDICALLY OPERABLE PATIENTS; SURGERY OR CKRS (DEBATE) Review the principles of surgical treatment of lung cancer and the importance of full staging Outline the principles of ablative radiation therapy Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each therapeutic modality of treating early stage lung cancer WHO WOULD HAVE THUNK IT IMMUNE THERAPY FOR LUNG CANCER Review the immune escape of cancers Outline the tumor and microenvironment pathways of barriers and heightened immune responses in lung cancer Discuss the effectiveness of immune checkpoint inhibitor therapies in lung cancer TOXICITIES OF IMMUNE CHECKPOINT INHIBITOR THERAPY: EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA IS DIFFERENT Discuss the common toxicities observed with immune checkpoint blockade Review the management of immune-mediate adverse events Discuss clinical experience using immune checkpoint blockade in Eastern North Carolina THE IMMUNOLOGIC EFFECTS OF ABLATIVE RADIATION Discuss the systemic effects of radiation Review the mechanisms of the abscopal effect Discuss the clinical applications of combining immune/targeted agents and radiation ADVANCES IN SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF LUNG CANCER Discuss the advances in minimally invasive Discuss the role of robotic surgery Discuss the advantages of minimally invasive thoracic procedures versus traditional approaches TUMOR BOARD CASE PRESENTATIONS Analyze patient cases to emphasize the inter-disciplinary treatment approach in lung cancer Participate in interactive discussion of integrating these approaches into individual patient care management and decision making
