What is Rallying? Rallying is: Real cars, on Real roads, Real fast! Rally events in the Canadian Rally Championship consist of flat-out racing on challenging mountain and forest roads. No practice is allowed. Unlike circuit racing, competitors generally see the course for the first time as they race it. At every moment the driver and co-driver must be ready for what may be around the next curve! Performance rally vehicles are production-based cars and trucks from manufacturers around the world. They compete both for the overall victory and wins within a class structure that groups together vehicles with similar performance. Each vehicle carries a driver and a co-driver/navigator. Using a detailed route book and a sophisticated rally computer, the co-driver keeps the team on-course and advises the driver of any hazards noted in the route book. This role is as critical as the driver's skill, since the team is traveling at full racing speeds over roads they have never seen before. Rallying in BC has a rich heritage with humble beginnings that go back as far as the late 50 s. Today, rallying is one of the fastest growing forms of motorsport in the world. Through increased television coverage from The Speed Channel and TSN, this sport has built an increasingly loyal following of fans and competitors. The media has also caught the buzz and more and more articles are beginning to appear in newspapers and magazines, and on the TV, radio and world wide web. Vehicle manufacturers such as Subaru, Ford, Volkswagen, Mazda, Hyundai and Mitsubishi, have been helping to drive this interest to new heights. These companies are making huge investments in the sport in the USA and Canada and are working to make rallysport as popular here in North America as it already is around the globe. And, to top things off, some of the latest computer games feature simulated rally racing helping to introduce a whole new generation of people to this exciting form of motorsport. The Canadian Rally Championship (CRC) sponsored by Subaru and Yokohama Tire features nine events across Canada, including the Pacific Forest Rally. The CRC is building on the massive success of the World Rally Championship, as factory-supported teams from Subaru, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen battle it out on back roads right here in Canada. Every event is televised nationally, broadcast on TSN (The Sports Network, RDS in Quebec) and OLN (The Outdoor Life Network). In 2002, an average audience of 232,000 fans saw each event in the series on TV. 2005 Canadian Rally Championship Page 3 of 8 www.pacificforestrally.com
The Pacific Forest Rally During the 70 s and 80 s the Pacific Forest Rally was a fixture on the national calendar. Revived once again in 2000, today the event is based in Merritt, just 2.5 hours from Vancouver. Some of the local teams will be well on their way to challenging the eastern-based crews for the championship lead, virtually guaranteeing a spectacle of competitive driving. Our team of organizers is dedicated to making this event one of the best in western North America. Their professionalism and thoroughness insure that every aspect of the event is just right. The reputation of our group and the picturesque setting in the Nicola Valley have helped achieve instant success, as fans and competitors continue to flock to this event.
