2 ABOUT US & A newspaper For all schools - not just academies! Academies Week is a new printed and online weekly newspaper for the whole school sector. Building on three successful years publishing our sister newspaper, FE Week, we have recruited an impressive editorial team (see page 3). The ambition is to quickly become the must read for everyone interested in school policies, finances and related research. Each edition will be 20 or more pages and packed full of exclusive news, in-depth analysis, opinion pieces, book and research reviews as well as job advertisements. We will also be publishing regular event or topic related supplements. So get in touch with your suggestions. Who is Academies Week for? The Academies Week newspaper and online content is aimed at teachers with a broad interest in education policy and finance, as well as aspiring, middle/senior managers, leaders and governors across the whole school sector in England. What areas of education are you interested in? Education related news and analysis that will be relevant to the early years, primary and secondary school sectors, including specialist school provision up to the age of 19, such as Studio Schools and University Technical Colleges. How can I get involved with the newspaper? There are several ways and we would encourage you to do so. This can range from suggesting news stories, interviews and events for us to attend through to sharing press releases and writing opinion pieces. See page 5 for more details. How much does a subscription cost? Use the promotional code on the back page to pay just 25 for the year (a 50 per cent saving on the full price). Can I advertise products and jobs? Yes. See pages 6 and 7 for details. On what day do you publish each week? Subscribers receive their newspaper on a Friday. See page 5 for publication dates and advertisement deadlines. 3 3 THE TEAM EDITOR NICK LINFORD T: M: Nick is the founder and former editor of FE Week and author of several books, including the Hands on Guide to Post-16 Funding, published by Pearson. As director of planning and performance at Lewisham College for seven years, he established a successful funding workshop and conference business. In early 2010 Nick moved to Pearson to launch their think tank, and in 2011 he left to set-up Lsect Ltd, a training and publishing company. SENIOR reporter SOPHIE SCOTT T: M: sophie.scott@academiesweek.co.uk Deputy EDITOR LAURA MCINERNEY T: M: laura.mcinerney@academiesweek.co.uk Laura McInerney taught in East London for six years, starting out as a TeachFirst participant and finally as an Advanced Skills Teacher. After writing a book in 2011, The 6 Predictable Failures of Free Schools and How To Avoid Them, she spent the next two years in the US studying education policy on a Fulbright Scholarship. During this time Laura regularly wrote features for LKMCo, TES, and the New Statesman and she stills writes a monthly Guardian column. SENIOR reporter PHILIP NYE T: M: philip.nye@academiesweek.co.uk Sophie comes from a background in regional newspapers, having worked for the past five years as a reporter at both daily and weekly papers, including the Northampton Herald & Post and Luton on Sunday. Most recently Sophie was the only specialist education reporter at the Oxford Mail, a large regional daily. Her crowning moment so far was being named as Journalist Newcomer of the Year in the East of England EDF Awards. Philip has a particular interest in data-led reporting, as well as a strong interest in finance. He has written for a number of publications, including The Times, The Financial Times and the Hackney Citizen, and co-founded specialist education news website EverythingFreeSchools. He previously spent close to three years at the National Audit Office, scrutinising the finances of government bodies and contributing to value-for-money studies. reporter BILLY CAMDEN T: M: billy.camden@academiesweek.co.uk Billy recently completed a degree in journalism at Anglia Ruskin University alongside his NCTJ Diploma at Harlow College. He spent two weeks as an intern at FE Week in February 2014, which led him to the role at Academies Week. Billy is a diehard Arsenal fan and lives with his parents, four brothers and one sister in Romford, Essex. DO you have a story? 4 News Contributing to Academies Week NEWS As you would expect from a quality newspaper, the first pages will be filled with the latest news from across the school sector. These stories will be written by our reporters (see page 3) but they are keen to hear from you about anything you think Academies Week should investigate and / or report. If you have a potential story and / or press release this should be ed to news@academiesweek.co.uk to ensure it is considered. Alternatively, you might have a subject that you would like one of our reporters to investigate. Please do let us know if you have shared the same information elsewhere, and if there are any timing restrictions. expert articles The experts section is where we publish opinion pieces. At 600 words in length and between three and four per edition, they present an opportunity for specialists and other experts to share their views on policies, announcements and best practice. In some cases opinion pieces will be commissioned from relevant writers, but we are also keen for people and organisations to come forward with offers and suggestions. These articles are not paid-for-advertorials (although we can do those), so be careful not to be promoting a particular product. For advertorials contact shane.mann@lsect.com. school assembly Profile Interview The newspaper consists of sections, which can also be found online. They are summarised below and we are keen that you contribute. Expert Articles Reviews School Assembly Supplements Profile interview Every week there will be an in-depth interview with and about someone who works within the school sector. For example, it might be a politician, school leader, governor, union official, civil servant or simply an teacher with an interesting history. Typically 1,000 words across two pages, the profile follows a popular format in our sister paper FE Week, and includes a large current photo alongside several other pictures. We are keen for suggestions as to who to interview, along with self-promotions if you think other readers would be interested. With one per edition there will be as few as 37 profile interviews each year, so we expect competition for coverage will be fierce. REVIEWS We will review a book and published piece of research each week. There will also be a best blogs of the week article alongside other features that will be developed with reader feedback. Like the expert articles, the reviews will be written by relevant experts who will offer an opinion based assessment. We will commission the reviewers. However, if you know of a relevant book and or piece of research that is due for publication then please contact our Deputy Editor (see page 3). This is a new section, unlike anything published by our sister publication FE Week, so do give Laura early feedback to help to make it as interesting and useful as it can be. Supplements Our school assembly section is where we will publish 8 to 10 short celebratory news stories each week about individual students and schools. This follows a popular format in our sister publication FE Week, called Campus Roundup. Higher quality and interesting photos have the best chance of featuring and the best picture might even appear on the front page. We will need lots of school related press releases and photos each week, such as you might send to a local newspaper. So if you work with any schools, be sure to tell them to them to us at news@academiesweek.co.uk In addition to the newspaper, we will also be publishing 16 page supplements from time to time. These are sent with the main paper at no extra cost to subscribers, as well as being free for all to download. Typically sponsored, a supplement might be event based, such as before or after an annual conference. Alternatively, supplements present an opportunity to explore a topic, such as technology in schools, in greater detail.
