3 CHAIR S LETTER On behalf of the Programme Committee, it is my great pleasure to present the programme for the SPE European Formation Damage Conference, which will be held on 5 7 June 2013, in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. The event alternates biennially with the SPE International Symposium and Exhibition on Formation Damage Control, held in Lafayette. Both events have a longstanding reputation as being the premier forum in the oil and gas industry devoted to completions, well productivity, formation damage, well stimulation, sand control, and water management. Following a record number of submissions, we have selected nearly 130 of the best papers, which will sit under the conference theme Unconventional and Conventional Solutions to Challenging Reservoirs. The conference will encompass a plenary session and 12 technical sessions with oral presentations, posters, and exhibits. The first two days are devoted to training courses focusing on formation damage and sand retention. The technical programme will start on 5 June with a plenary session featuring keynote addresses by renowned international experts in the area of formation damage and well productivity enhancement. THE EVENT Formation damage has a significant impact on the performance of many wells and fields. Zitha, Delft University of Technology Description: Over the last decade, the scale of produced water re-injection (PWRI) in the industry has increased tremendously. PWRI is not only used for disposal purposes but also for voidage replacement and sweep in waterfloods. It is widely acknowledged that if injection under fracturing conditions is allowed, injection water quality specifications can be relieved significantly. On the other hand, induced fracturing creates its own challenges with regard to areal and vertical sweep, and (potential) loss of containment. Moreover, injection under induced fracturing conditions does not resolve all injectivity issues. Course Outline: 1. Introduction: overview of the types of formation damage, its prevention, and remediation 2. Causes and mechanisms of well injectivity and productivity damage 3. Mathematical modelling and laboratory studies of formation matrix damage 4. Injectivity decline for PWRI under matrix (non-fractured) injection conditions 5. Water injection under fracturing conditions: introduction and theoretical concepts 6. Injectivity decline for PWRI under induced fracturing conditions 7. Vertical/areal sweep issues associated with PWRI under fracturing conditions 8. Monitoring/surveillance for PWRI under fracturing conditions 9. Decision making in water management 10. 9 Tuesday, 4 June 2013 TRAINING COURSES Particle Sizing and Sand Retention Testing: Methods, Analysis, and Interpretation Instructors: Tracey Ballard and Steve P. Beare, Weatherford International Description: This one-day course covers the principles and practicalities of different methods of particle sizing why different methods give different results, when these differences are legitimate and when something may have gone wrong. The course is designed to provide attendees with an overview of what is involved in producing such measurements so that results can be viewed in a more informed way. A variety of samples for sand control selection will also be given to make data interpretation more straightforward from both particle sizing and retention testing. Finally, different methods of sand retention testing will be discussed (including the inherent problems with such testing) and details of how to commission a test matrix which gives meaningful results. Byrne, Senergy In keeping with the conference theme: Unconventional and Conventional Solutions to Challenging Reservoirs, the plenary session will include invited speakers with specific insights into unconventional reservoir development and the impact of damage and stimulation. The session will also outline innovative cross disciplinary approaches to damage identification and mitigation in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs. Industry leading technical experts will bring fresh and stimulating discussions to kick off the conference. There will be an opportunity for open discussion towards the end of the session where full participation from conference attendees will be welcome. Technical Session 1: Depleted Reservoirs Wouter Botermans, Tulip Oil Ali Ghalambor, Oil Center Research International, L.L.C. The session will present the many challenges in constructing, completing, and producing pressure depleted reservoirs. It will illuminate several controversial and mythical issues related to formation damage inducement and remediation actions. Technical Session 2: Unconventional Reservoirs Pickard Trepess, Sintex International Pacelli L. Zitha, Delft University of Technology This session will cover novel methodologies for the evaluation of formation damage in tight and shale gas or oil formations. Modelling, laboratory studies, and field cases, will illustrate innovation in hydraulic fracturing, proppant design and placement, and the resulting productivity and injectivity enhancement benefit. Technical Session 3: Formation Damage in HP/HT Reservoirs Russell Watson, M-I SWACO, a Schlumberger Company Pacelli L. Zitha, Delft University of Technology This session will address production optimisation of challenging HP/HT environments. Innovative laboratory studies and field cases will address formation damage due to thermally induced secondary reactions, asphaltene deposition, and solids precipitation as well as scaling. Technical Session 4: Formation Damage Acidising and Fines Istvan Lakatos, University of Miskolc Pickard Trepess, Sintex International 10 Well stimulation technology has become increasingly complex as our knowledge

11 CONFERENCE PROGRAMME on the mechanism of formation damage has improved. This session will explore examples of formation damage caused by an accumulation of solid materials in the near wellbore zones and fine migration into the reservoir space. Recommendations of new methods to restore and improve lost well performance will also be made. Thursday, 6 June 2013 Technical Session 5: Formation Damage General Pavel Bedrikovetski, Australian School of Petroleum Leonard J. Kalfayan, Hess Corp. Formation damage can occur in any well operation, in new well drilling and completion operations, and at any time during the life of a well this may be as a result of stimulation, workover, and even naturally during routine production operations. During this session we will explore a unique and broad variety of formation damage topics related to both new and existing oil and gas wells, field case histories, experimental studies, numerical modelling, and unique approaches to damage prevention and solutions. Technical Session 6: Sand Control Steve P. Beare, Weatherford International Ltd. Anne Mette Mathisen, Statoil ASA This session addresses the application of a variety of sand control methods including slotted liners, screens, gravel packs, and sand agglomeration. Both laboratory work and field experiences are described, providing an insight into current practices for both sand control selection and application. Technical Session 7: Fluids and Evaluation Alexandra Morrison, Halliburton BAROID Russell Watson, M-I SWACO, a Schlumberger Company This session will address the benefits to production from advances in drilling, completion and stimulation fluids. It will also address new developments in evaluation techniques used to study the effect these fluids have on production. Technical Session 8: Case Histories Stimulation Wouter Botermans, Tulip Oil Abdullah Al-Mohammad, Saudi Aramco Do new technologies, systems, and methods actually work in the field? During this session, a series of very interesting case histories from various countries will be discussed. The topics will cover technologies, such as hydraulic fracturing and stimulation in different reservoir types. Papers will explore analysis techniques which evaluate the formation and design treatments as well as the application of materials and fluids for improved operational design and results. There will also be examples on light-weight fluid developments in connection with drilling. Technical Session 10: Stimulation James A. Curtis, Baker Hughes Gerard Glasbergen, Shell In this session a variety of innovative developments in the area of stimulation will be presented, including: Matrix stimulation New developments in applied fluids Deep penetrating systems Fluid placement verification The effect of perforation techniques Hydraulic fracturing The focus is on fracturing fluid-induced damage Novel methods for improving fracture conductivity Technical Session 11: Formation Damage in HP/HT Reservoirs Michael T. Byrne, Senergy Istvan Lakatos, University of Miskolc Formation damage is a crucial problem in HP/HT oil and gas fields. For operators, control and mitigation of the detrimental effects leading to the deterioration of well performance, is essential. The session will disseminate recent laboratory and field results, which will contribute to a better understanding of the mechanism of formation damage and also give guidelines as to how to reduce it under HP/HT reservoir conditions. Technical Session 12: Water Injection Jean-Noël Furgier, Total Paul van den Hoek, Shell Water injection is essential for reservoir management and ultimate recovery in many projects. Produced water re-injection can also be an effective way of optimising operating costs while complying with more and more stringent environmental regulations. This session will discuss issues related to sustainable well injectivity. 12 Young Presenter Award This award recognises a young professional author who presents at the conference. The award will be presented at the close of the conference.
