We fund research, give grants, campaign for change, provide information and support, invest in MS specialists and lend a listening ear to those who need it. The MS Society is a democratic organisation. Every one of our 38,000 members has an equal say in what we do. We are also supported by 9,000 volunteers and 260 staff members. Our Mission Our mission is to enable everyone affected by MS to live life to their full potential and secure the care and support they need, until we ultimately find a cure. Context of Work More than 100,000 people in the UK have MS, more than 2 million worldwide. We offer hope for the future by investing in research and help for today through our information, support and campaigning. People with MS guide our work. Our volunteers and supporters shape our research programme through our Research Network, help us provide support locally through our branches and groups and help us write our publications. Our staff provide information and support services to people affected by MS, work with scientists and healthcare professionals and raise funds in four national offices and communities across the UK. With branches in every part of the UK the Society s work has inspired thousands of volunteers, supporters and staff members to make a difference to the lives people affected by MS. 1
2 Purpose To make sure our digital and offline content meets the needs of our target audience and fulfil our organisational objectives To be accountable for protecting the MS Society s brand on MS Society digital and offline channels, managing and minimising risk to financial income and reputation. To work with the head of marketing and external agencies to implement verbal and written guidelines across the organisation and to ensure tone of voice is embedded across all content. To ensure our all our digital and offline publishing outputs are user-centric and that our site content, layout and taxonomy are constantly respondent to users needs, behaviours and expectations. To ensure we proactively spot and feed any content and publishing opportunities to capitalise through our content development strategy and content repurposing To ensure any content development is integrated and co-ordinated between offline and online, working with the content and creative manager and the managing editor to effectively manage the content hub for the MS Society. In collaboration with the rest of the digital and content team ensure we create high profile campaign content on MS Society websites and be involved in any content and publishing creation, optimisation and evaluation. To manage the day to day operational work of the editorial team (off and online) in delivering high quality publications and digital content As a key member of the Fundraising and Engagement team, to contribute to the leadership, planning and policy formulation of the directorate as a whole As a member of the management community to influence and implement the Society s direction of travel to meet our organisational objectives Key Relationships: Internal The post holder works closely with and advises a wide range of people across all nations, directorates and seniorities, and most regularly: Communications and campaigns team Community and events fundraising team Research team Information and support teams Policy team Individual giving fundraising team Local network managers and officers Wider digital and content team 2
3 External The post holder works closely with a range of suppliers such as digital consultancies volunteers of all levels of seniority our audience of people affected by MS, consulting on user behaviour and responding to their needs Key Accountabilities: The MS Society Senior Editor will support delivery of the Society s Marketing and Communications strategy to deliver the MS Society s strategic goals by: 1. Business plan implementation 1a Ensure our digital and offline content meets the needs of our target audience and fulfil our organisational objectives 1b Implement the MS Society content strategy 1c Ensure we proactively spot and feed any opportunities to capitalise through our content development and publishing strategy 1d Assist in the development of campaigns content, its optimisation and evaluation and produce report on content and publications 2. Detailed Responsibilities: 1. Business plan implementation 85% total Planning and allocating work, monitoring achievement of deadlines, and supporting staff as appropriate Focusing the work of the team to implement business plans and contribute to the achievement of the Society s strategic aims and priorities Ensuring a clear focus on driving improvements in quality, impact and performance 1a Ensure our digital and offline content meets the needs of our target audience and fulfil our organisational objectives 25% Accountable for protecting brand and external representation of MS Society across all digital and publishing outputs Ensure, in the creation of content and publishing outputs, editors adopt user centric approach Accountable for the integration and consistency of website information structure and page layout according to information architecture best practice, continually ensuring it is developed and improved as digital trends evolve Supporting the development of a publications strategy, aimed at improving, and optimising our publishing outputs, ensuring we have the skills and resources to produce high quality publications Drive innovation and creativity in the production of quality, engaging content and publishing outputs Ensure we develop and continually update users journeys through the MS Society s online platforms and publications personas and that we optimise the cross-overs between offline and digital Support the sharing of learning about digital and offline content, in relation to our target audience 4
5 1b Implement content strategy 20% Direct the redesign of specific site sections to better meet business goals, working closely with internal teams, setting clear, measurable objectives and using insight and analysis to clearly demonstrate results Work with the content and creative manager and the production manager in ensuring we optimise the production and scheduling process for publishing and content work Assist content and creative manager to design and deliver workshops and communications tools on how content can best be used to meet objectives, upskilling staff and volunteers Ensure the site content is updated, refreshed and better responds to the needs of our target audience, their context and intent. Keep up to date with emerging content strategy and user experience trends and new technologies to maximise opportunities and help shape ongoing strategic development 1c Ensure we proactively spot and feed any opportunities to capitalise through our content development and publishing strategy (20%) Lead the editorial team to implement a robust system of SEO (search engine optimisation), sharing the insight from off and online Ensure our content quickly responds to opportunities presented by SEO, digital technologies and repurposing of content 1d Assist in the development of campaigns content, its optimisation and evaluation and produce report on content and publications 20% Assist in setting campaign-specific content strategy and project manage content production for high-profile public-facing campaigns, setting campaign strategies that support the achievements of strategic objectives Work across teams to continually evaluate the success of our campaigns content, its optimisation and periodic and end of campaign reporting Use a range of reporting tools to measure success against targets and KPIs, analyse results, report insights to a wide range of colleagues and make recommendations for future improvements Write high quality, compelling digital copy for campaigns, using specialist digital copywriting knowledge to address the way audiences behave online and meet campaign targets People Management 10% Managing performance and development, through regular feedback, supervision, supporting learning and the Performance development review process Recruiting and inducting new staff. Developing and maintaining effective working relationships across the team, department, directorate and Society. 5
6 Monitoring and Reporting on Performance 5% Accountable for the analysis and evaluation of the teams work performance information, monitoring and reporting against objectives, outcomes and KPIs. Experience Experience of carrying out content strategy change activities such as: o devising systems of content governance o testing and measuring results of changes to content Proven experience of managing a suite of platforms of a similar size and scale to the MS Society s Experience of managing change/changing people s behaviour with regard to content strategy or website content workflow A proven track record of success in leading and managing a team of comparable size and complexity, to deliver high quality results to deadlines Working with a wide range of internal stakeholders Proven planning and project management experience to control effective use of resources Experience of developing, communicating and implementing business plans Demonstrable experience of applying effective problem solving techniques when the situation demands Experience of training others or facilitating group work 6
