1 Job title: Associate Director of Network Management, Programme Division Department: Community Impact Location: London Contract type: Permanent Closing date: 23/07/2014 About Teach First How much you achieve in life should not be determined by how much your parents earn. Yet in the UK, it too often is. We are an education charity. We work with like-minded people and organisations towards a day where every child has the education they are entitled to. We train people with leadership potential to be inspirational teachers in schools in low-income communities across the country. These leaders go on to work in schools and other sectors of society towards our vision: a future where no child's educational success is limited by their socio-economic background. For more information on the work we do, please visit Job purpose The Associate Director for Network Management leads the team whose purpose is to grow the engagement of a network of people tackling educational inequality; inspiring them to take action to achieve the vision through supporting Teach First, progressing in their career, volunteering or developing new ideas. This growing network currently consists of 3,500 Teach First ambassadors (alumni) who have all taught for at least 2 years in a school in challenging circumstances in England or Wales. You ll work collaboratively with internal teams and external stakeholders to build engagement across this network. As Associate Director, you ll work extensively with colleagues who head up different teams at Teach First, specifically Communications, Careers, Social Enterprise Innovation, Technology and with the 11 local offices across England and Wales. The Network Management team uses a variety of tools, services and techniques to support other Teach First teams to work with a broader network of committed individuals. This includes our many university partners, in-school mentors, supporters, Teach First participants as well as other teachers and professionals who are committed to taking action towards the Vision. As Associate Director, you will have oversite of the national network of ambassadors and be responsible for a number of areas of work which are crucial in ensuring that Teach First is successful in increasing engagement across our stakeholders. These areas include our online Community Website ; org-wide Customer Relationship Management (CRM), National Community Events, Community-led networks, Community publications and Community Engagement. You are not expected to be an expert in each area but you will need to be able to inspire and innovate with the technical leads, both within and outside you immediate team. See A Day in the Life of the Associate Director at the tail end of this Job Description to really bring the role to life. About the team The Network Management team is made up of 4 sub-teams, and the Associate Director will line manage the leads for each of these teams to support on the effective delivery of the areas above. These teams are: Services: This team ensures that we are collating and using information about our network effectively and have the membership tools necessary to work with the network. Network Engagement: This team ensures that we are generating both online and offline engagement opportunities for the network which are tailored to their interests. Community Engagement: Drawing on the work and best practice of the Services and Network Engagement teams, this team ensures that each Local Area understands the interests of its local network, and provides engagement opportunities tailored to their interests. Community Events: This team ensures that there are high quality opportunities for members of the network to connect offline with one another through events. Who this role might suit and where might it lead you next? This is a really exciting opportunity for someone who is passionate about driving real change in the field of educational inequality, and in galvanising a powerful, expanding network of people to play their role in ending it. You don t need to be an expert in all the areas you oversee but you will certainly need the appetite and capability to learn from those who are. It is more important that you can demonstrate the ability for strategic
2 outcomes-focused leadership for the team and organisation, rather than the technical knowledge that sits beneath it. The successful candidate can expect to gain considerable experience in change management, strategy management, budgeting and operational excellence. You will have the opportunity to work with colleagues from a variety of disciplines across the organisation and influence those more senior than yourself. Through the role, you will develop operational expertise around the technical areas of membership/alumni and community management, stakeholder engagement, online engagement and development, event management and data and reporting. This position would suit someone keen to progress into a senior management or operational role or who wants to develop a career in one of the above areas. At Teach First we have an annual calendar of learning and development opportunities available, designed to support employees to develop into their roles and stretch them to achieve their full potential. We also provide new employees with an extensive and tailored induction programme to support your development during those critical first few months. Further, the current postholder is able to offer insights into the role and will be able to provide guidance during the interview process and prior to the successful candidate taking up the position. Key accountabilities The success of this role is measured through the increase in engagement of the network and a corresponding increase in the amount of voluntary or career roles that members of the network are taking up. As Associate Director of Network Management, you ll be accountable for ensuring that we are achieving this increased engagement at a national level and for supporting colleagues across the country to drive increased engagement at a local level. The team have three core objectives: 1. Collate and use accurate data about the network to inform planning 2. You should be an adept networker, skilled at building new partnerships and connecting members of the network to increase the amount of vision aligned activity. Experience managing a team spread across different locations or remotely would be an advantageous but is not essential. You will also need the following technical skills, knowledge and experience: Results-driven Knowledge of and/or interest in UK education Strong leadership skills with a focus on outcomes Proven experience of setting, delivering and assessing the effectiveness of strategy A change-maker who is confident working with senior stakeholders and prepared to challenge

5 A day in the life of the Associate Director for Network Management, Teach First 09:00-10:30 Checking in with the team I ll often start the day with check-ins with the team, helping them with the specific challenges they are facing, developing new ideas with them or talking about their professional development. This is a fun part of the job as the 4 direct reports all lead on quite different areas, so we can be discussing anything from the lay-out of the upcoming issue of the Community Magazine or content for the next blast, to what new partners we may be starting to work with in a specific part of the country and the projects ambassadors are planning there, or reviewing our data tracking to identify what s going well and what upcoming challenges we need to be ready to overcome are. 10:30 12:00 - Projects At any one time the team has a number of projects on the go, and my role is to make sure we re on track to deliver on time, and also to help shape them, pitching in with ideas about how to maximise engagement etc. Over the summer, this includes delivery of the Summer Edition of the Magazine and getting ready for the launch of a major new feature on the Community Website. As the person in the room who is seen as the expert on the network, I ll often be called on to give advice or to plan out how to engage them best through communications and through activities and events etc. 12:00 13:00 Lunch 13:00 14:30 The ambassador network A major part of this role is leading the network of 3,500 ambassadors at a national level, helping to sketch out what support we should be offering to maximise the impact of this really diverse group of people who work in various sectors, including schools, government, business and the third sector. I am part of a small group of senior colleagues who drive this work, so I will often be working with one of them on a particular area. For instance, I might work with the head of careers ( pathways ) to design an engagement plan for increasing the number of ambassadors who are on track to become Headteachers, or with the London Director to think about how we can support ambassadors there to be building new community networks. I also lead on cohering our messaging and strategy around the ambassadors, so I ll be sharing the latest information and ideas from my team and making sure that colleagues are brought-in to what is planned. 14:30 16:00 Meeting members of the network All members of the Network Management team are encouraged to carve out time every week to stay connected personally with members of the network so we can be responsive to their interests. This often involves inviting other organisations in or visiting them to talk about how we can work together, meeting an ambassador for a coffee to talk about what they re working on, or maybe going to visit schools or social enterprises to understand what s going on across the network. 16:00 17:30 Catching up At the end of the day I ll always make sure that I have time to catch up on any actions I ve committed to or anything that has come in through the day, and also organised= my calendar for the following day. Like all jobs, there s a certain amount of admin to be done, but often this part of the day is about making sure work is delegated effectively and that we re getting back to members of the network who have been in touch. 18:00 20:30 Evening Events These don t happen every day, but there are usually a few events each month. Some of these are small interestnetwork events such as the Policy Network, which is a small group of ambassadors who meet once a month to discuss hot topics in social policy, and other times they are much larger, like taking part in a training event for new teachers. I ll attend some external events too with partner organisations. We share these out amongst the team, but I make sure to go to as many as I can as they are such a good way of getting to know members of the network or starting or building relationships with new partners.
