3 Promoting Excellence in Sports Management Research education & practise Invitation to Participate It gives me great pleasure to invite you to the 23rd EASM Conference held in the impressive Aviva Stadium in Dublin, Ireland from 9 to 12 September We have designed an exciting programme centred on the conference theme of Sport Management in the Digital Age, which reflects the reality of a fast-paced interconnected world, where professional and global communities are linked at the touch of a button, where live sporting events are streamed to our mobile phones and where teams and athletes can interact instantly with their fans irrespective of location. For the sports manager, the brave new digital world poses questions about what sport is and how it is accessed, offers opportunities to engage fans in exciting new ways and reveals challenges to accessing consumers in an increasingly fragmented media landscape. 4 Your Hosts The UCD Centre for Sport Studies is well placed to deliver a high quality event. Established in 1999 to deliver academic programmes, research and consultancy services in sports management, the Centre has since expanded to include exercise management and health and performance science amongst its offerings. The successful Diploma, BSc and MSc degrees in Sport and Exercise Management have been completed by some of Ireland s most well-known athletes, sporting personalities and administrators, which reflect UCD s overall commitment to excellence in sport. The University s own track record in sport is exemplary, with UCD teams competing in the premier national competitions in soccer, rugby and hockey and individual athletes succeeding on the European, international and Olympic/Paralympic stage. Competition on the field is complemented by innovation off the field, and the reputation of the UCD Centre for Sports Studies is confirmed by the employment of graduates and students in the organisation and delivery of Irish sport through the country s national governing bodies, non-profit and corporate sectors. Finally, the Centre embraces new technologies in its delivery of teaching and learning experiences and prepares graduates for opportunities in digital marketing, social media and other related applications. About EASM Promoting Excellence in Sports Management Research education and practise The European Association for Sport Management (EASM) was established in 1993 as an independent association of people involved or interested in the management of sport in the broadest sense. EASM membership is composed of academics and professionals from the public, voluntary and commercial sectors. EASM has a wide international network of experts and National Organisations in the fields of sport management and has close European and Intercontinental relations (the International Sport Management Alliance). Members of EASM come from nearly 40 different countries, and from every continent. Aims of EASM Include: Promote and encourage study, scientific research and scholarly writing on sport management Facilitate and develop exchange of information and dissemination of best practice Work with member organisations to support sport management associations and organisations Develop sport management by acting as the European Association Co-operate with other international bodies with shared goals 3 Encourage the convening of international conferences Teach sport management and establish educational exchanges of sport management techniques Facilitate the exchange of practical and scientific experiences in the field of sport management Extend the teachings and activities of EASM to all places throughout Europe and the rest of the world Stimulate the interest of Members to improve their ability and willingness to learn more on sport management Publish journals, newsletters, magazines or other reference material in print, electronic or other forms of media Maintain and develop databases, websites and other informative material and data on sport management

5 Sport Management in the Digital Era Conference Theme No longer located in green pastoral settings or confined to twodimensional screens, over the past decade there has been a revolution in the way that sport is consumed. From instant, mobile access to live feeds and results, do it yourself camera selection and scheduling, through to fantasy leagues, global fan communities and personal access to athletes, sport has been de- and reconstructed to create endless opportunities to engage with favourite players, teams and brands. Rather than trekking to the stadium or watching on TV, game day now incorporates mobile technology, tablets, Twitter and Facebook updates, as well as interactions with other viewers both in the stands and around the world to generate a multimedia experience. For the sport manager, this brave new digital world poses novel challenges, exciting opportunities and many questions about what sport is, how it is accessed, what fans expect and how we reach consumers in an age of fragmented media use. As such, the conference theme, Sports Management in the Digital Age, reflects the reality of a fast-paced, interconnected world, where sports content has been both a driver and a beneficiary of new technologies. From national governing bodies and international federations, professional teams and athletes themselves through to corporate sponsors, media outlets and marketers, this theme encourages attendees to establish where sport fits into the digital world and how sport management scholars and professionals can understand and utilise technologies, applications and online interaction to respond to consumer demand and further the ends of their own organisations, clients and stakeholders. Whilst not an exclusive theme, it is hoped that the prospect of engaging with the digital age in all its forms will inspire delegates to reflect critically on their practice and align their research interests with those of the conference. 6 Keynote Speakers Prof. Bill Gerrard, Professor of Business and Sports Analytics at Leeds University Dr Bill Gerrard has pioneered statistical performance analysis and an evidence-based approach to coaching in football, rugby league and rugby union. He has worked as a technical consultant with Saracens since March 2010 Bill also provided statistical analysis for the SkySports coverage of Super League Previously he has worked with various UK football clubs, an Australian rugby league team, and Billy Beane and the Oakland A s owners. Bill holds the UEFA B football coaching licence. He has acted as an expert witness in several sports legal cases. Bill is a graduate of the University of Aberdeen, Trinity College, Cambridge and the University of York, and is currently Professor of Sport Management and Finance at Leeds University Business School. Tony Schiller, Executive Vice President, Paragon Marketing Tony Schiller has been a leader in the strategic marketing industry for the past 15 years and is intimately involved in developing strategic marketing initiatives for Paragon s vast client roster. He brings with him over 25 years of sports and entertainment experience, including professional basketball and hockey, the concert industry and major events. During his career, Tony has put together hundreds of sponsorship deals totalling over $200,000,000 in revenue. More recently, Tony has worked with Enterprise Ireland to support start-up companies in the sports technology area, including Fan Footage and vstream.
