2 Chapter News - August 2015 Page 2 The President s Corner : Dear SuncoastHR Members: I hope you are enjoying a summer full of personal growth and professional progress. July is a special month because we get to celebrate the establishment of America s independence. I often wonder what percentage of people in our current workplace truly embrace the meaning of this celebration. We have been so preoccupied with the hectic nature of life that stopping to reflect seems rare these days. For me, I find myself having to revisit the meaning each year so that I can truly cease, embrace, and celebrate every day of this great month. So, pardon my tangent as I set aside the business topics this month to reflect upon the thoughts of one of several men who made our independence possible. As our veterans continue to persevere in their individual quest to protect and maintain our freedom, I reflect on how overwhelming the process of declaring independence must have been. One of the immediate images in my mind is an excerpt from a letter written by John Adams to his wife Abigail on July 3, 1776: You will think me transported with Enthusiasm but I am not. -- I am well aware of the Toil and Blood and Treasure, that it will cost Us to maintain this Declaration, and support and defend these States. -- Yet through all the Gloom I can see the Rays of ravishing Light and Glory. I can see that the End is more than worth all the Means. And that Posterity will triumph in that Days Transaction, even tho We should rue it, which I trust in God We shall not. So, when faced with difficult challenges in my business or day to day life, I ease the burden by simply thinking about what others had to navigate in order to achieve real transformation. Knowing what our founding fathers George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Alexander Hamilton, James Monroe, and Benjamin Franklin endured to create such a legacy is daunting to me. The challenges I face compared to theirs seem miniscule, and I am eternally grateful for that relief. I hope to see many of you at the HR Florida conference beginning Sunday, August 30th in Orlando. We are planning a great social event with our sister chapter s HR Tampa, and SHRA. See you all soon! Warm regards, Mary Those who expect to reap the blessings of freedom, must, like men, undergo the fatigue of supporting it. ~Thomas Paine For questions relating to CEUs for the Chapter meetings: Contact Tom Topping at professionaldevelopment@suncoasthr.org At the end of each Chapter meeting, both certificates will be handed out with the HRCI CEU code and the SHRM CEU code. It will be each member s responsibility to pick this up on their way out of each meeting to ensure they have the CEU info needed to complete their re-certifications online.

When HR adopts a business partner role, we can alert leaders to the risks and opportunities and assist in executing changes. While we want a seat at the table we sometimes do not feel comfortable sitting at the table. This session explores ways to add value to business decisions and ensure that plans are well crafted to match the realities of the organization life cycle. Goals: 1) Understand the 6 organization life cycle & how decisions are impacted at each cycle, 2) Discover how HR can add value at each organization life cycle, 3) Explore critical questions HR can surface at the decision making table by life cycle CEUs: This program has been Approved for 1 recertification credit hours toward PHR, SPHR and GPHR recertification through the HR Certification Institute, as well as SHRM PDC s. The credits will be handed out at the end of the meeting. SuncoastHR is recognized by SHRM to offer Professional Development Credits (PDCs) for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP.
