1 Newsletter Volume XXVII Issue No. 2 SEPTEMBER nebraska chapter american concrete institute 1425 W. 9th St. Fremont, NE Have you ever been asked to write an article or give a presentation and found yourself speechless? PRESIDENT'S M E S S A G E get involved. stay involved. ask others to get involved. BOB IRWIN If you have you understand exactly where I am coming from as I attempt to write another article for our ACI News Letter. There are a number of my friends and colleagues who would not mind having me remain speechless as I tend to actually talk too much now. Some of you who have only known me for the past thirty years or so might find it hard to believe that I used to be quite introverted. There was a time when I could go all day without speaking or having someone speak to me. What change occurred that has made and introvert into an extrovert? Concrete and the passion I have for the product, the people and the industry. I know there are a number of you out there that are just like me passionate about our industry and concerned about making sure we give something back. There will be a number of challenges facing our industry in the coming years so the best thing we can do is get involved. Stay involved and ask others to get involved. Our ACI Chapter can always use more members and more participation from our membership whether it is asking to join our board of directors, offering board member ideas on breakfast or lunch seminars or participating in technical training. - Bob ACI Nebraska Chapter offers scholarships The Nebraska Chapter of the American Concrete Institute will be offering Scholarships for the 2016 school year, to students at two year and four year Nebraska Colleges, Universities and Technical schools, who are studying in the field of concrete design, construction, or materials. 3 Nebraska Chapter ACI page 3 Membership Report Michael Gerdes Over the years I have been fortunate to have been asked to participate on various committees, boards of directors, and serve as the Executive Director for a Foundation. As these organizations are typically volunteer based participation, serving requires balancing your time with numerous other demands such as family and work. Serving on these organizations can be very rewarding and also a nice resume builder. Unfortunately over the recent past years, it seems as others are losing interest to participate in these organizations. I have observed that it is often a similar group or age of individuals that comprise the general membership, actively participate, and repeatedly fund non-profit organizations. My personal conclusion is that we need to do a better job seeking out the next generation of members and organization leaders. My wife was part of a club supporting our local library and offering scholarships to high school students. She and her fellow club members observed a decreasing interest in new participants; especially over the last decade and the club membership continued to shrink. Unfortunately, over time this club was unable to continue their good efforts without the involvement and new ideas of new members. I have spoken with co-workers and friends that are observing similar decreasing interests in membership, support, and participation in similar organizations. Professional and semi-professional organizations have been able to offer their membership a variety of technical training programs, certifications, and opportunities for continuing education units for some time. Now in the age of technology, these organizations have both direct and indirect competition offering technical training programs. I ll be the first to state, an online webinar really fits well into a time demanding schedule. It s also important to attend programs in person for the group interaction and for personal and business networking opportunities. Maybe it s a change in our culture, a generational change, or our time demanding lifestyles. Nonetheless, a change seems to be in the air. I m not writing this to condemn, but to have the readers of this article consider how you can assist. It starts with membership in an organization such as the Nebraska Chapter of ACI. It can be further rewarding by offering your time to actively participate in organizing programs and activities, assisting at fundraising events, or serving as an Officer or Director with an organization. In my opinion the largest problem confronting our Chapter today, is new membership and active participation from younger generations. I do not believe it is a generational issue so much as it is that current membership and leadership needs to do a better job seeking out membership and involvement of the next generations. Especially for volunteer organizations to be successful into the future, we must transform into the technology, ideas, and needs of the next generation of members and leaders. While doing so, it will be important to retain the fundamental organizational purpose and mission. I am asking, in the next month seek out at least ONE individual in your company, organization, church, or industry and discuss the benefits of membership and ACTIVE PARTICIPATION in any organization that is important to you. Certainly the Nebraska Chapter of ACI could be one of those. Discuss the benefits you, your community, or your industry have received from your membership and participation and express how important it is for THEIR involvement with the organizations NOW and into the FUTURE. Submitted by Mike Willman Technical Committee Report The Technical Committee is currently working with the Nebraska Concrete & Aggregates Association to establish the training dates. The training dates will be posted on the ACI Nebraska web-site (acinebraska. org) or the Nebraska Concrete & Aggregates Association web-site (nebrconcagg.com) in October. The training will begin the first week of December with completion in April 2016.
4 Nebraska Chapter ACI page 4 Submitted by Jereme Montgomery #ConcreteTough promoting construction careers NC&AA is currently participating in a statewide effort promoting construction careers for the Nebraska Construction Career Days. This is the first of its kind hosting events in 6 different locations across Nebraska. Construction Career Days is an event for high school students to explore the various areas of construction. Each day features hands-on activities provided by industry professionals and college faculty that offer students a glimpse of the diversity of careers in the industry. Nationwide, the Construction Career Day events have successfully promoted the construction industry and the careers it offers since 1999, but this is the fist of its kind in Nebraska. The Nebraska Concrete & Aggregates Association promotion committee coordinated a Concrete Tough station where students placed and finished concrete slabs. They are instructed on the proper tools and methods of placement, strike-off, bullfloating, edging, jointing, texturing, and curing the concrete. We have selected the concrete tough theme to communicate to students that our industry is not an easy career. It is demanding and tough. But as most of you know, it is a very rewarding career. We refuse to sugar coat anything because the world s toughest building materials needs the world s toughest people. This is just the beginning in a major effort to recruit and attract future young professionals to the concrete industry as concrete contractors, ready mix concrete drivers, concrete technicians, and heavy equipment operators. If you have any interest in joining our movement, please contact the NC&AA office at

DeLorm (402) Progress through Knowledge The best of the best ready mixed concrete drivers from across the country came together for the annual competition that celebrates ready mix truck driver skills. This year s event, part of NRMCA s ConcreteWorks Conference and Expo, took place on Sunday, September 20th, in San Antonio and consisted of 64 drivers from across the United States. Mr. Brian Bosiljevac with Consolidated Concrete, LLC made history by being the very first mixer driver from Nebraska to compete in NRMCA s National Mixer Driver Championships. Not only did Mr. Bosiljevac make history being the very first Nebraska driver to compete in Nationals, he also made history earlier in the year by being crowned champion at the 2015 Nebraska Truck Driver Championships held on June 5th and 6th in Grand Island, Nebraska. Brian Bosiljevac is a 20-year veteran from Consolidated Concrete LLC out of Omaha, NE. He has accumulated over 250,000 miles and was originally trained in heavy equipment in the military. After the military, he crossed over to the concrete industry and never looked back. He contributes his success of being a professional truck driver to taking time to understand your surroundings while completing your job in a safe manner. He said the thing he liked most about competing at Nationals, was having the opportunity to compete against some of the best drivers in the nation. Congratulations Mr. Bosiljevac, job well done.
