1 ASCE Richmond Branch Newsletter Volume 5 Issue 4 January 2013 Important January Dates In This Issue 2013 General Assembly Informational Webinar January 16th, 12:00 PM, Online 2013 General Assembly Meet and Greet January 23rd, 6:00 PM, Jefferson Hotel, Downtown Richmond, VA President's Message Exciting Upcoming Events and PDH Opportunities Local News and Projects Sponsors of the Month President's Message Happy New Year! As we enter into 2013, I hope that you had a wonderful holiday, and that the coming year brings good fortune and opportunity. Over the next year, Richmond ASCE will be working with you to determine the best way we can serve your needs. From feedback we received, it seems that many of our members place a high priority on utilizing ASCE for PDH credits. We will continue to offer enough PDH's each year to allow ASCE to fulfill the Virginia PDH requirements singlehandedly. Additionally, we will only be charging $25/credit, which is a fraction of the cost that many webinars and other conferences can cost. If you have any topics, interesting techniques, or regulation programs you would like us to feature, please let us know. Our Vice President, Brooke (Brooke.Young@Kimley-Horn.com), and myself (abird@dewberry.com) would love to hear from you! Another area we are revamping is our Younger Members Group. The younger members play a key role in ASCE and we are looking for ways to Meet the Board and Chair Members! Click here for our bio's and contact information President - Amy Bird, P.E. President Elect - Austin Clark, P.E. Vice President - Brooke Young Secretary/Treasurer -
2 increase participation. If you have a younger engineer at your office, please encourage them to come to an event. We have found that many people are not involved simply because they do not know it is an option. Also, at the National level of ASCE has a mentoring program where younger engineers can pair up with an experience engineer. If anyone is interested in establishing this at a local level, please let me know. Any suggestions for events or topics younger members are interested in, please contact Justin, our younger member chair at justinwatson@itac.us.com. Our Educational Outreach program is continuing to grow. This year's Popsicle Stick Bridge Contest has seen record advanced registrations, and many teachers have contacted Ashley, ajohnson@rkk.com, to make sure their students will be able to participate. As this competition grows, we have many opportunities for you to become more involved in helping us reach out to local students to show them that engineering can be fun. Please see the section on the contest and let Ashley know if you will be able to help us out. On the 23rd, we, along with the Virginia Section of ASCE, are hosting the annual General Assembly Meet and Greet. Several local government representatives have already committed to attending, and if you are able to join us to stress the importance of improving infrastructure to these representatives, please stop by. Our Government Relations chair, Chris, Michael.Vaught@stvinc.com, is holding an informational session prior to the event to make sure people are up to date on what is going on in the government and to answer any questions you may have. Please see his article below for more information. I hope to see you at an event soon! If you have any suggestions on how to improve an existing event, or would like to see something different, please do not hesitate to contact me at abird@dewberry.com, or Additionally, if you are interested in becoming more involved in ASCE Richmond, please let me know that as well. We would love to have you! Tony Gaynord, P.E. Past President - Mike Howell, P.E., S.E. Communications Chair - Melanie Leckey, P.E. Education Outreach Chairs - Caleb Lange, P.E., Ashley Johnson, P.E., and Josiah Johnson Government Relations Chair - Chris Vaught, P.E. Membership Chair - Vacant Website Chair - Kevin O'Neill Young Member Chair - Justin Watson Exciting Upcoming Events! 2013 General Assembly Meet and Greet and Informational Webinar The 5th Annual General Assembly Meet and Greet will be held on January 23rd, 2013 at the Jefferson Hotel in Downtown Richmond, Virginia from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. Please join us as we speak to lawmakers regarding bills relating to civil engineering that are being discussed and passed through the assembly. This is our opportunity to make an impact on legislature in hopes of increased funding for transportation and infrastructure projects and educate the legislators ahead of our 2013 Infrastructure Report Card that will be released in March. Light food and drinks will be provided.
3 To prepare for the Meet and Greet, we are having an open webinar on January 16th, 2013 from 12:00pm to 1:00pm. During the webinar, we will discuss important background information about the General Assembly, how bills become laws, and select bills that we will focus our attention on during the Meet and Greet reception to provide a uniform message. The information for the webinar is presented below. Please register on our website if you would like to attend either event. If you have any questions or have additional comments, please contact Chris Vaught at Michael.Vaught@stvinc.com or You have been invited to attend an Audio Conference Call and Web Meeting. 4 Want to make a lasting impression? Want to help inspire a generation of future engineers? If so, there are several ways for you to get involved with this year's Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition. 1) Volunteer to help during the competition - We are looking for approximately 25 volunteers to help with registration and check-in, aesthetics and innovation judging, and testing of the bridges. Volunteers are needed on Sunday, February 10, 2013 from 12-5 p.m. Two hour shifts are also available if you can't make it for the entire afternoon. If you are interesting in helping out, please contact Ashley Johnson at ajohnson@rkk.com or ) Sponsor the competition - Do you have aspirations of building a popsicle bridge of your own? As part of the competition, students have the chance to 'Beat the Engineer' by competing against a bridge built by a professional civil engineer. With a $100 donation, YOU could get the opportunity to build the Engineer's Bridge. Want to do something even bigger? Consider sponsoring one of the two testing rigs used to load the bridges. With your contribution of $500, a plaque of appreciation with your company name and logo will be permanently displayed on the rig, and viewed by competition participants, spectators, and volunteers for years to come! Sponsorship of any amount is greatly appreciated, and all donations collected directly benefit the competition. All sponsors will have their company logos displayed on banners and t-shirts for this year's competition. If you are interested in in helping sponsor the Popsicle Bridge Competition, please contact Ashley Johnson at ajohnson@rkk.com or Reminder, the 18th Annual Popsicle Stick Bridge Competition will be held February 10, 2013 at the Science Museum of Virginia. Terrell Paper Competition TO: Younger Members in Region 4 FROM: Ted Niemann, Chair, tniemann@rjn.com Theresa Harrison, Member, tharrison@lawson-fisher.com RE: 2013 Daniel V. Terrell Paper Competition The Region 4 Assembly, which includes all members of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in the states of Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia, has established a very meaningful and worthwhile competition and award for a Younger Member who resides within Region 4. A Younger Member is defined as a member, associate member or affiliate not over 35 years of age on February 01, The award is named after Daniel V. Terrell of the Kentucky Section. Dean Terrell was President of National ASCE in This award is presented annually for the outstanding paper submitted on a topic established by the Region 4 Assembly. The topic this year is: "Is it ethical to maintain current licensure requirements in light of the ever increasing technical complexity of our profession?" Two (2) papers per Section may be entered in the Daniel V. Terrell Paper Competition. If one chooses to enter the Daniel V. Terrell competition, the paper must be submitted to the Terrell Committee, by the entrant's Section President, by March 1, Presentation of the Daniel V. Terrell Paper Competition entries will be on Friday afternoon as part of the Spring 2013 Meeting of the Region 4 Assembly to be held on April 19th - 20th, 2013 in Louisville, KY. Travel arrangements to the meeting should be coordinated with the entrant's respective Branch and/or Section. While the topic is the same as for the Society's Daniel W. Mead Contest, it is not necessary that an entry be made to both the Terrell and Mead Competitions. If the entrant chooses to enter the Mead competition, the deadline is February 1, The winner of this award receives Society and peer acclaim as well as an impressive bronze plaque and cash prize in recognition of the time and effort put into this competition and a cash prize.
