2 What are your HR Certification Choices for 2015? Certification through HRCI HRCI Human Resources Certification Institute (hrci.org) Established in 1973 by SHRM PHR (Professional in HR) and SPHR (Senior Professional in HR) Also, GPHR, PHR-CA, SPHR- CA, etc. Certification through SHRM SHRM-Society for Human Resource Management (shrmcertification.org) New in 2015 SHRM-CP (SHRM Certified Professional) and SHRM- SCP (SHRM Senior Certified Professional)

Eligibility Requirements and Fees HRCI based on education level and years of professional level work in HR PHR Masters (1 year); Bachelors (2 years); Less than Bachelors (4 years) SPHR Masters (4 years); Bachelors (5 years); Less than Bachelors (7 years) SHRM based on education level* and years of work in HR (can be non-exempt) SHRM-CP Masters (1 year); Bachelors (2 years); Less than Bachelors (4 years) SHRM-SCP Masters (4 year); Bachelors (5 years); Less than Bachelors (7 years) *HR Degree - reduces number of years by one year Fees HRCI - $400 for PHR; $525 for SPHR (2015 change) SHRM - $300 for SHRM members; $400 of non-shrm members

Testing Windows, Recertification, Global Testing Windows: HRCI May-July 31 and Nov-Jan 31 each year (2015 change) SHRM May July 15 and Dec Feb 15 each year Recertification HRCI every 3 years, 60 credits, $150, SPHR needs business credits SHRM every 3 years, 60 credits (PDCs), $100 Global HR HRCI separate GPHR certification SHRM global is incorporated in SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP exams

The Exam Computerized both are taken at Prometric Computer Testing Centers HRCI nothing changed from 2014 PHR/SPHR 175 total; 150 MC scored items + 25 non-scored items; 3 hours; one correct answer; knowledge, scenario, application National pass rates historically: PHR 56-60% and SPHR 47-57% SHRM 4 hours; credit for 2nd best answer for situational questions SHRM-CP 160 total;130 MC scored items + 30 non-scored items (90 knowledge and 40 situational judgment) SHRM-SCP 180 total;150 MC scored items + 30 non-scored items (90 knowledge and 60 situational judgment) No pass rates available at this time

16 Which HR Certification is right for you? This is an individual and personal decision; and some HR Professionals are taking both exams to get both HR certifications, which is one strategy option (costs are still minimal compared to many professional certifications) Some personal thoughts about SHRM and HRCI: SHRM is a very large, well-known, and respected voice for HR Professionals and has been around for over 60 years; their HR Certifications have the SHRM name attached and that will help recognition and credibility with employers; their extensive infrastructure of local and state SHRM chapters and university partners will work to support the new HR Certification HRCI is a highly respected institution with an excellent track record; their PHR and SPHR Certifications are well known and widely accepted by employers and should continue to be in the near future Employer Recognition: I believe most employers recognize that either SHRM or HRCI Certification is an indication that the certified HR Professional has gone the extra mile to master an extensive body of HR Knowledge and Competencies proven by passing a rigorous national examination. Also, HR certification indicates that the HR Professional is committed to staying current in the field due to the recertification requirements.
17 If you already have HRCI Certification should you also get the new SHRM Certification? This is also an individual decision, but most HR Professionals that I know who already have their PHR, SPHR, GPHR, etc. are taking advantage of SHRM s offer to get the new SHRM Certification at no charge through If you have a valid HR generalist certification (including: PHR, SPHR, GPHR) which you obtained by January 30, 2015, you are eligible for SHRM s new certification at no cost by completing a free online tutorial regarding the SHRM Competency Model. Go to shrmcertification.org and select Pathway to get started. You will need to recertify at the end of three years (similar to HRCI) and you will need 60 PDCs (Professional Development Credits) and the cost is $100. However, the activities that you do for HRCI recertification credits can count toward SHRM recertification credits. So, the additional costs for having both certifications is basically $100 every three years. REMINDER: DEADLINE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS OFFER IS DECEMBER 2015
