5 HR Certifications By Laura Hampton, SPHR, SHRM-SCP Vice President, Marketing, Membership, & Training Services Many HR professionals were surprised last May when the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) announced that it was creating two new certifications for HR professionals called the SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and the SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP). Up to that point, the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) and Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certifications had been offered by the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI). SHRM and HRCI were closely aligned for years, although they have always been separate entities. HRCI offered the exam and certification, and SHRM provided study materials and encouraged members to get certified. Apparently, the two organizations could not agree on changes that SHRM felt needed to be made to the certifications. A series of press releases from both organizations created confusion. Below are considerations for those who are already certified or who may wish to obtain certifications. Currently Certified Professionals What happens to my current PHR/SPHR/GPHR, etc.? HRCI has clearly stated that it plans to continue to offer these certifications. More than 135,000 HR professionals hold PHR and SPHR certifications from HRCI. So professionals can maintain their certifications through the current process. Can I also get a SHRM certification? Yes. Anyone who had their PHR/SPHR by January 31st can take an on-line tutorial during 2015 to obtain the equivalent SHRM certification. You will document that your certification is current, sign the code of ethics, and complete an online tutorial and brief test. If you miss a question, you will be given the chance to review that section and adjust your answer. Should I do both? That depends on your goals and circumstances. If you plan to continue a career in HR and/or certifications are important in your organization, then our answer is yes. The process is easy and free, so why not? The only down side is that you will have to track credits and recertify separately with both entities. Individuals who are Not Currently Certified Which certification should I seek? That also depends on your experience and career goals. The eligibility requirements are easier for the SHRM designations; if you are not yet eligible for the PHR, you may be eligible The Employers Associa on
6 to get your SHRM-CP. One of the most significant differences is that non-exempt experience counts for the SHRM certifications. If your organization has placed a priority on the PHR/SPHR (or your leader has his/hers), there may be an expectation that you go for the known entity until the SHRM certifications are in the marketplace longer. If you work somewhere that is not familiar with the differences, then either certification may meet your needs. All HR Professionals What is the real difference? That is not yet clear. SHRM created an updated "Body of Competency and Knowledge (BOCK)." The majority of the content appears to be similar to the HRCI-defined body of knowledge. The new SHRM material includes more about HR in a global economy; versus HRCI has a separate Global PHR certification available. The new SHRM material goes into more detail about aspects of business strategy and sustainability. One known difference is that SHRM recertification hours are all general credit hours. The SCP will not have a carve-out for any business/strategic credits, which are required for the SPHR recertification. Individuals may also want to consider that the SHRM certifications are not yet accredited, if that is important to you or your organization. It is anticipated that they will be accredited within a few years. Will a study course be available? Most providers are evaluating if they can offer a combined study course for both certifications, or will they choose to offer courses for one or both. Providers who use the SHRM materials or who are SHRM Education Partners will offer a course for the SHRM certifications. (The Employers Association has always purchased materials from an independent third party, so we are considering offering a prep course for both certifications.) Will classes count for recertification credit for both certifications? Both SHRM and HRCI certifications will require 60 hours of recertification credit in a threeyear period. Since the competency models are similar, most courses should count for both certifications. Want to read more? Visit /hr-certifications for more archived articles and resources. Recertification Credit The Employers Association is a pre-approved provider for HRCI recertification hours and an approved provider for SHRM recertification hours. Most of our classes will be eligible for both designations. Visit /events and filter by training category, or look for the appropriate seal and credit hour information on each training class page. Certification Prep Courses The Employers Association currently offers a prep course for the PHR/SPHR designations. We will continue to offer this course, and we are in the process of evaluating if we will offer a combined course for the PHR/SPHR and new SHRM certifications. The Employers Associa on
