There may be additinal admissin requirements fr admissin, such as the Test f English as a Freign Language (TOEFL). CREDENTIAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION 1. CREDENTIAL PROGRAM APPLICATION: Cmplete the Multiple Subject Credential Prgram Applicatin. 2. PROCESSING FEE: There is a $25.00 nn-refundable fee fr this applicatin. This can be paid at the Bursar s ffice prir t submitting the prgram applicatin. The Bursar will stamp the payment slip included in the prgram applicatin. If yu cannt pay in persn, a check r mney rder payable t SF State can be attached t the filled ut fee slip. 3. TRANSCRIPTS: Submit ne fficial set f sealed transcripts frm every cllege r university attended. This is in additin t transcripts fr the CSU Graduate applicatin. Yu shuld cllect all fficial transcripts and submit them with the applicatin. SF State transcripts can be unfficial cpies frm MySFSU. Freign transcripts must be evaluated by a state apprved agency. DEGREE: Applicants must have earned a bachelr s degree r higher, except in prfessinal educatin (ie. elementary educatin), frm a reginally accredited cllege r university. Applicants with degrees frm utside the United States must have the equivalent f a bachelr s degree frm a US reginally accredited institutin. The degree must be awarded befre enrlling in the credential prgram. If the degree is nt awarded at the time f the applicatin deadline, applicants must prvide transcripts at the time f applicatin and updated transcripts nce the degree has been awarded. 5. GPA: Applicants fr admissin shuld have attained a grade pint average f at least 2.67 in all baccalaureate and pst baccalaureate cursewrk r a grade pint average f at least 2.75 in the last 60 semester units r 90 quarter units. 6. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Yur statement f purpse shuld be typed, duble-spaced and n lnger than three pages. Describe succinctly yur reasns fr applying t the Multiple Subjects Credential prgram, yur preparatin fr this field f study and why ur prgram is a gd fit fr yu. In additin, please cnsider the fllwing questins: Why d yu want t be a teacher? What experiences have prepared yu t teach in a linguistically diverse, urban setting? What persnal qualities d yu pssess and what experiences have yu had that have prepared yu t wrk in a cllabrative envirnment? Fr thse applicants applying fr the Bilingual Authrizatin (Chinese r Spanish), please write yur statement f purpse with a fcus n teaching in a bilingual elementary classrm. 7. RESUME OR CURRICULUM VITAE: Yur resume shuld list yur educatinal accmplishments, wrk experience and any pertinent vlunteer service. 8. EARLY FIELD EXPERIENCE: Applicants must demnstrate that they have fulfilled a minimum requirement f 45 hurs f Early Field Experience prir t applying t the Multiple Subject Credential Prgram. This Early Field Experience requirement can be met by vlunteering, substitute teaching, r wrking as a paraprfessinal in a Multiple Subject, general educatin classrm in a Califrnia public schl. The classrm shuld be culturally and linguistically diverse, meaning that at least ne third f the students are English Language Learners. This includes Ebnics speakers. Fr applicants seeking bilingual authrizatin, this experience Page 2

3 shuld take place in a bilingual elementary classrm (Chinese r Spanish). The intentin is fr applicants t gain sme expsure t and familiarity with the rle f the teacher, the student age grup, the current curriculum standards, and the public schl envirnment. The experience shuld be within the last 5 years. NOTE: Experiences in pre-schls, special educatin, higher educatin, religius educatin, after schl prgrams, r utside the U.S. will nt meet this requirement. A letter f recmmendatin frm the teacher r supervising site administratr must verify this experience. The letter shuld briefly describe the classrm cmpsitin, including the cultural backgrund f the students, and the classrm envirnment, including grade level. The letter shuld als state hw the applicant was invlved in the classrm, including qualitative cmments abut the applicant s perfrmance in the classrm, especially nting the applicant s effectiveness in a linguistically and culturally diverse classrm. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: A minimum f three (3) letters is required. The Early Field Experience letter can cunt as ne f the three letters, Item #7 abve. Letters shuld address the applicant s character, aptitude fr teaching, wrk ethic, r academic ability, etc. Additinal letters will als be accepted t augment the applicatin. Letters shuld be dated, n letterhead and have riginal signatures. Letters frm relatives and letters mre than five years ld will nt be accepted. Applicants shuld cllect all letters and include them in the applicatin packet. 10. SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENCY: The Credential Prgram des nt prvide further preparatin in a subject area. Knwledge f subject matter shuld be mastered befre beginning a credential prgram. Passing the CSET Multiple Subject Subtests I, II, and III befre the applicatin deadline is required t enter the credential prgram. Thse with nly partial passing scres will nt be admitted. Phtcpies ( hard cpies ) f all exam scres must be included with the Prgram Applicatin. Scres sent t SF State by the testing cmpany DO NOT reach us. BASIC SKILLS REQUIREMENT: Chse ne f the fllwing ptins t fulfill this requirement. Yu cannt cmbine any f the ptins belw: A. CBEST (Califrnia Basic Skills Examinatin) Submit a phtcpy f the results. Fr infrmatin and registratin g t: B. Out-f-State Basic Skills Exam. Submit a phtcpy f the results. Nt all states Basic Skills Exams have been apprved by the CTC. Cntact the Credential Services Center t find ut if the test yu tk is apprved. Fr mre infrmatin n specific tests, cntact the apprpriate Department f Educatin fr the state in which the test is given. C. CSET: Multiple Subjects plus Writing Skills. Yu must pass the Writing Skills test AND all three Multiple Subject subtests t fulfill the Basic Skills requirement. Submit a phtcpy f the results. Fr infrmatin and registratin g t: D. CSU EAP Placement Tests (Early Assessment Prgram). This test is given t Califrnia high schl students nly. This is usually taken in the spring f yur 11 th grade year. Results must shw Cllege Ready OR Exempt.. Submit a phtcpy f the results. E. CSU ELM & EPT (Entry Level Math & English Placement Test). These tests are taken by incming CSU freshmen. ELM passing results: 50 (550 prir t March 2003) EPT passing results: 151. Submit a phtcpy f the results r a printut frm MySFSU r similar CSU student system. Results must shw a scre n bth ELM and EPT. *Since the EAP and the EPT/ELM examinatins are linked fr CSU admissin and placement, the Cmmissin will accept a cmbinatin f scres frm the EAP and the EPT/ELM examinatins t meet the Basic Skills Requirement as lng as the individual passes a sectin f English and a sectin fr Mathematics. Fr example, an individual may pass the Mathematics EAP and the EPT examinatin t satisfy the Basic Skills Requirement. 12. SECOND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT: Shw verificatin f experience learning a secnd language. See Page 7 fr fulfillment ptins. 13. CERTIFICATE OF CLEARANCE: In accrdance with Califrnia state law and Educatin cde, all teaching credential applicants must g thrugh a backgrund check. All applicants must apply fr a Certificate f Clearance with the Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing (CTC) OR submit prf f prir cmpletin f the clearance. Acceptable dcumentatin in lieu f a Certificate f Clearance: Valid credentials r permits issued by the CTC, including emergency 30-day, pre-intern, clear r preliminary, r Child Develpment permits. 4 14. TB TEST: TB test verificatin shuld be a phtcpy f a nte r card frm a dctr. A negative skin test r a clear chest x-ray is acceptable. Verificatin shuld be valid fr at least 6 mnths after August. The term f validity fr negative TB is ne year. The term f validity fr chest x-ray is five years frm the time taken. TUITION RATE As f Fall 2008 the Credential Only status is n lnger an ptin fr incming Multiple Subject credential students. All credential students are cnsidered Elementary Educatin Masters + Credential students. This designatin is fr university status purpses nly. Credential students will nt be wrking n an Elementary Educatin MA. Due t this status change, please be aware that ALL credential students will be paying tuitin at the Graduate rate. ADDITIONAL CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS These can be cmpleted after admissin, befre cmpleting the prgram. Cmpletin f U. S. Cnstitutin curse r exam. Yu must meet the U.S. Cnstitutin requirement either by curse wrk r examinatin. Thse wh earned a B.A. frm a CSU campus have already met this requirement. Check with the Credential Services Center t see if yu have met this requirement. See the Credential Services Center website fr test site lcatins: CPR. Yu must have current training in administering CPR t adults, children and infants at the time f applicatin t the Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing RICA r Reading Instructin Cmpetence Assessment. This test shuld be taken after taking EED 782, Teaching Reading- Language Arts. See fr registratin infrmatin. Perfrmance Assessment fr Califrnia Teachers (PACT). All multiple subject credential candidates are required t pass the Perfrmance Assessment fr Califrnia Teachers knwn as the PACT. SF STATE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CREDENTIAL PROGRAM FILE USE AND STORAGE POLICY All materials submitted t San Francisc State University (SF State) becme the prperty f SF State and will nt be returned. THE SB 2042 CREDENTIAL AND CLAD The Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing (CTC) gverns teacher certificatin under the authrity granted t it by the Califrnia State Legislature in Senate Bill SB 2042 includes stipulatins under Assembly Bill 1059, which authrizes yu t teach English Language Learners r what was previusly designated CLAD classrms. This means that yu will NOT have t cmplete a separate (r an additinal) CLAD prgram nr take the CTEL exams. Page 4

Student teaching takes place in public schl classrms, in and arund San Francisc. The Department f Elementary Educatin is als pleased t ffer a new Emphasis n Early Childhd Educatin (ECE). Students in the ECE emphasis will be a part f a distinct chrt taking curses that fcus n child develpment, teaching, and assessment fr educating children at the pre-schl, transitinal kindergarten, and kindergarten thrugh third grade levels. Cursewrk als prvides students with preparatin fr teaching upper elementary grades, as graduates earn a Califrnia Multiple Subject (Elementary) Teaching Credential that authrizes the hlder t teach in self-cntained classrms that are typical within elementary schls. Students will cmplete a field placement in a lcal preschl; the culminating student teaching placement will be in an elementary schl classrm. 7 SECOND LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT Candidates must shw verificatin f experience learning a single secnd language btained thrugh ne f the ptins described belw: A. Cmpletin f ne cllege-level curse in the learning f a language ther than English (including American Sign Language). A grade f "C" r better, "Pass," r "Credit," must be earned, verified by an fficial transcript frm a reginally accredited cllege r university. COMPLETE THE ONLINE APPLICATION AT THE CTC WEBSITE Apply fr the Certificate f Clearance using the Web Applicatin Prcess at the CTC website. ( Imprtant: Befre beginning the applicatin prcess, be sure t turn ff all pp-up blckers fr this site. A. Click the Online Services fr Educatrs navigatin buttn B. Select the link Educatrs Page t cmplete yur applicatin n the Educatr Page C. Create/lg in t yur persnal prfile n the secure Educatr Page using yur SSN and date f birth. If creating a new prfile, yu will need t enter this infrmatin twice. D. Edit/cmplete yur persnal prfile and click Next E. Click n the Create New buttn under Web Applicatins t start yur applicatin fr the Certificate f Clearance F. Select the Certificate f Clearance frm the drp dwn menus; review the checklist verifying yu meet all requirements fr the dcument, print it, click Next G. Read the Disclsure page fr the Prfessinal Fitness questins and answer Yes t cntinue t the next page. H. Answer each f the Prfessinal Fitness Questins, cmplete the Oath and Affidavit, and click Submit Payment I. The display shws the dcument applied fr and the amunt t pay. Click the Cntinue buttn. J.
