The fllwing requirements 1-9 are fr ALL Special Educatin applicants. 1. PROGRAM APPLICATION: Candidates must cmplete a separate Special Educatin Prgram Applicatin. The applicatin can be dwnladed at the GCOE website OR Department f Special Educatin & Cmmunicative Disrders website. Credential applicants must als apply t the master s degree and meet master s requirements fr admissin. 2. PROCESSING FEE: A $25.00 nn-refundable prcessing fee is charged fr the Special Educatin prgram applicatin. Applicants shuld pay at the Bursar s Office. The Bursar will stamp the payment slip included with the prgram applicatin. If applicants cannt pay in persn at the Bursar s Office, attach a check r mney rder payable t SFSU t the filled ut payment slip and submit with the prgram applicatin. 3. GPA: The minimum GPA accepted fr ALL Special Educatin applicants is 3.0 verall in all baccalaureate cursewrk. 5. DEGREE: Applicants must have earned a bachelr s degree r higher frm a reginally accredited cllege r university. Applicants with degrees frm utside the United States must have the equivalent f a bachelr s degree frm a US reginally accredited institutin. The degree must be awarded befre enrlling in a Special Educatin prgram. If the degree is nt awarded at the time f the applicatin deadline, applicants must prvide transcripts at the time f applicatin and updated transcripts nce the degree has been awarded. 6. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: Submit a typed essay (1-3 duble spaced pages) utlining the reasns yu want t enter the selected prgram area. Include experiences and persnal attributes that illustrate a ptential fr success in the prgram and in the field f special educatin. Applicants might als include prfessinal gals fr the future. 7. LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Submit at least tw letters f recmmendatin. It is preferred that letters cme frm individuals wh have bserved and cllabrated with yu in a prfessinal r educatinal setting. WRITTEN ENGLISH PROFICIENCY REQUIREMENT: (Master s degree applicatin requirement). Each graduate student must demnstrate the ability t write English crrectly and effectively. T assure that each graduate student has the required prficiency in written English, tw distinct assessments are made by the majr department: Level One and Level Tw. EARLY FIELD EXPERIENCE*: Candidates must demnstrate that they have fulfilled a minimum requirement f 45 hurs f Early Field Experience prir t applying t an Educatin Specialist Prgram. This Early Field Experience requirement must be met by vlunteer r wrk experience in a K-12 th grade classrm with a Califrnia Credentialed Teacher r a dcumented field experience deemed equivalent. The Early Field Experience must represent yur prgram chice and be in the kind f envirnment that matches the credential yu are seeking. It is recmmended that ne f the tw required letters f recmmendatin be written by smene wh supervised the Early Field Experience. A frm is included in the applicatin that needs t be signed by this persn. Agencies that can assist yu in finding field experience lcatins are the San Francisc Schl Vlunteers/San Francisc Educatin Fund ( r Pacifica Schl Vlunteers with pprtunities fr pre-schl, kindergarten and first grade ( Yu may als call yur lcal schl district fr mre ptins. *Orientatin and Mbility Prgram applicants are exempt frm having field experience in a schl setting prir t applying. Hwever, having related experience is still highly desirable. 11. SUBJECT MATTER COMPETENCY**: The Cmmissin n Teacher Credentialing requires that Educatin Specialist candidates prve they pssess a bdy f apprpriate knwledge that reflects Califrnia State Standards. Educatin Specialist Credential candidates have a chice f subject areas; they can chse multiple subjects cmpetency r single subject cmpetency. Thse wh have already met subject matter cmpetency as a prerequisite t earning anther Califrnia teaching credential d nt have t repeat this requirement if they can prvide a cpy f a valid credential. Fr credential purpses, cmpetency in either multiple subjects r a cre single subject is acceptable. Emplyers may require cmpetency in a particular subject area fr certain psitins. Acceptable dcumentatin in lieu f a Certificate f Clearance: valid credentials r permits issued by the CTC, including substitute, pre-intern, clear r preliminary, r Child Develpment permits. Select the Certificate f Clearance frm the drp dwn menus; review the checklist verifying yu meet all requirements fr the dcument, print it, click Next G. Read the Disclsure page fr the Prfessinal Fitness questins and answer Yes t cntinue t the next page. H.
