1 Overview Advanced Standing fr Currently Licensed Practical Nurses fr the Assciate f Science (AS) Prfessinal Nursing Degree Prgram Currently licensed practical nurses (LPN) with unencumbered licenses are invited t apply with advanced standing t the Prfessinal Nursing (NPRO) Prgram at Minneaplis Cmmunity & Technical Cllege (MCTC). LPNs wh are admitted t the NPRO prgram receive five (5) credits f advanced standing, have limited labratry requirements in the first term, and d nt have any clinical requirements in the first term. As advanced-standing learners, LPNs take a ne-semester curse alngside their unlicensed peers t deepen their understanding f basic nursing practice and t begin their transitin frm practical t prfessinal nursing. Advanced-standing LPN learners jin their peers fr all classrm, labratry, and clinical learning in terms tw thrugh five t cmplete the requirements fr an Assciate f Science Degree and t sit fr the Natinal Cuncil Licensure Examinatin fr Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Authrizatin t take the NCLEX-RN cmes frm the Minnesta Bard f Nursing when graduates apply fr licensure as a RN. After passing the NCLEX-RN, licensure may be applied fr in any state. NPRO is a selective admissin prgram (yu must apply, meet qualificatins, and be admitted). Students wh are admitted t NPRO are dually admitted t Augsburg Cllege and prvisinally admitted t the Bachelr f Science in Nursing (BSN) cmpletin prgram. NPRO students wh successfully cmplete the prgram with a 2.5 GPA in nursing cursewrk and wh pass the NCLEX-RN are eligible t earn a BSN in as little as ne additinal year. Successful NPRO students may als cntinue their nursing educatin at ther clleges and universities that ffer a Baccalaureate nursing degree. MCTC als has articulatin agreements with Metrplitan State University, the Minnesta State Clleges and Universities cnsrtium, and ther private institutins. Tw chrts f advanced-standing NPRO students are admitted each year t begin cursewrk in the Fall semester: Mnday-Friday evening (classrm) + alternating weekends (labratry/clinical) chrt with NPRO curses n the MCTC campus, and Mnday-Friday daytime (classrm) and evening (labratry/clinical) chrt with NPRO curses n the Saint Paul Cllege campus. When applying t the NPRO Prgram with advanced standing, LPN applicants may indicate a preference fr the chrt they wish t be admitted t. Preferences will be hnred as far as pssible, but cannt be guaranteed. Applicants frm MCTC will be given first pririty fr the MCTC campus chrts, and applicants frm Saint Paul Cllege (SPC) will be given first pririty fr the SPC campus chrt. Each NPRO curse is 7 r 8 credits, and requires a cnsiderable amunt f utside-the-classrm study. NPRO curses must be taken in sequence nce NPRO cursewrk has begun. Students wh wish t cmplete their degree n a part-time basis shuld cmplete all general educatin requirements prir t admissin t the NPRO Prgram. Becming a prfessinal Registered Nurse is a serius cmmitment, requiring dedicatin and a desire fr excellence. Once NPRO cursewrk has begun, wrking mre than 15 hurs per week utside the Prgram is discuraged. Meeting the admissin requirements des nt guarantee admissin t the prgram. Applicants with a financial hld r wh are suspended r expelled fr academic r disciplinary reasns frm any cllege r university are nt eligible fr admissin t NPRO. Apply fr general admissin t MCTC. If yu are nt already a MCTC student, apply nline at and pay the general applicatin fee. Have a current and unencumbered license as a practical nurse (LPN). Yu must prvide verificatin f yur licensure in yur NPRO applicatin packet. Typically, this will be a printut frm the Minnesta Bard f Nursing website shwing that yu have a license, and that it is unencumbered (has n restrictins). In additin, applicants must: Be a graduate f an apprved practical nursing prgram ffered by an accredited pstsecndary institutin, and Have attained a letter grade f C r higher in all practical nursing curses in the first attempt. Take the Test f Essential Academic Skills V (TEAS V). The TEAS V is a standardized natinal examinatin f basic learning skills. Research has shwn that applicants wh d well n the TEAS V are mre likely t be successful in nursing schl. Yu must achieve a scre f 62% r higher. Fr mre infrmatin abut the TEAS V, including hw t register, study guides, practice tests, g t MCTC recmmends that applicants review and prepare fr the TEAS, but des nt endrse any particular set f review r preparatin materials. Yu may take the TEAS V n mre than tw times between February 1, 2014 and January 31, If yu have tested mre than twice in that perid, we will nly cnsider yur first tw scres. The TEAS V is ffered at least fur times per year at MCTC, and is ffered in ther lcatins. The cst t take the TEAS V at MCTC will be less than $75 (as f June 2014, the cst is $66). Csts at ther lcatins will vary and may be as high as $120. When registering fr the TEAS V, yu must use yur name exactly as it appears n yur gvernment-issued pht identificatin (driver s license r passprt). Yu will need yur gvernment-issued pht ID t be admitted t the test. Yu must als use this name, exactly as it appears n yur Prfessinal Nursing Prgram applicatin materials. Applicants must include a cpy f their TEAS V test reprt shwing that they have attained a scre f at least 62% in their NPRO applicatin package. Fulfill the Accuplacer Testing Requirements (r cmplete the minimum cursewrk), fr reading cmprehensin (includes reading/writing), math, and if applicable, ESOL listening & speaking. Reading Cmprehensin Testing (includes bth reading and writing) must be cmpleted befre January 31, 2015 t qualify fr 2015 NPRO applicatins. Nursing applicants must achieve a scre f 78 r higher n the Accuplacer reading cmprehensin test, r fulfill ne frm each (reading and writing) requirement: Reading requirement ptins: - Cmplete READ 1300 at MCTC with a letter grade f B r higher, r - Cmplete READ 0200 r ESOL 0052 at MCTC with 85% r higher in the classwrk and n the exit exam. 3 NPRO Advanced Standing Prgram Overview 3 - At anther cllege, cmplete a reading curse that is a direct transfer equivalent t MCTC s READ 0200, ESOL 0052, r READ 1300 with a letter grade f straight B r higher, dcumented n cllege transcript (P (pass) is nt acceptable), r - Placement int READ 1300 by Test Exemptin, based n cmpletin f 15 r mre semester credits f reading-intensive general educatin cursewrk, r degree earned. Writing requirement ptins: - Cmplete ENGL 0900, ESOL 0051, ENGL 1110 r ENGA 1110 at MCTC with a letter grade f B r higher, r - At anther cllege, cmplete a writing curse that is a direct transfer equivalent t MCTC s ENGL 0900, ESOL 0051, r ENGL 1110 with a letter grade f straight B r higher, dcumented n cllege transcript (P (pass) is nt acceptable). Withdrawal (W), r grade f D r grade f F in a writing curse. Applicants may have n mre than ne W, D, r F in ENGL 1110 r ENGA 1110 at MCTC, r a direct transfer equivalent frm anther cllege at any time in their academic histry. - Applicants with mre than ne W, D, r F in these curses wh can prvide evidence that the pr grade was because f significant r extrardinary life circumstance (such as severe illness, military deplyment, family crisis, r natural disaster) may petitin fr an exceptin t this requirement during this nursing applicatin cycle. - Petitin fr Waiver f Requirement frms are available in Academic Affairs (K.2100). The petitin frm and supprting, authritative dcumentatin must be delivered t the Nursing Admissins Cmmittee, Academic Affairs (K.2100) n later than 4:00 p.m. n December 26, If apprved, yu must enclse a cpy f the apprved petitin in yur NPRO applicatin packet. ESOL Listening & Speaking Testing, if applicable, must be cmpleted befre January 31, 2015 t qualify fr 2015 NPRO applicatins. - Achieve a scre f 87 r higher n the Accuplacer ESOL listening & speaking test, r - Cmplete ESOL 0043 at MCTC with a grade f P (pass), dcumented n transcript r C r higher, r - Cmplete ESOL 0033 at MCTC with a scre f 85% r higher in the class cursewrk and n the exit exam. Meeting the requirement in this manner must be dcumented n the MCTC Instructr s Skip List, r - At anther cllege, cmplete an ESL listening and speaking curse that is a direct transfer equivalent t MCTC s ESOL 0043 with a grade f P (pass) r with a letter grade f straight C r higher, dcumented n cllege transcript. Math Testing must be cmpleted between September 1, 2013 and January 31, 2015 t qualify fr 2015 NPRO applicatins. - Achieve a scre f 76 r higher n the Accuplacer elementary algebra test, r - Cmplete MATH 0070 (Intrductry Algebra) at MCTC with a letter grade f C r higher, r - At anther cllege, cmplete a math curse that is a direct transfer equivalent t MCTC s Math 0070 r higher with a letter grade f straight C r higher, dcumented n cllege transcript (P (pass) is nt acceptable). Accuplacer testing at ther clleges. If yu tk the required Accuplacer tests at a cllege utside f the Minnesta State Clleges and Universities (MnSCU) system, yu must include a cpy f yur Accuplacer test reprt in yur NPRO applicatin packet. The test reprt must shw yur name exactly as it appears n yur NPRO applicatin.

If yu have cmpleted previus curses in reading, English (writing), ESOL, r math, and yu plan t transfer these curses as an alternative t Accuplacer testing, any curses transferred must be direct equivalents t MCTC s curses. Applicants are encuraged t verify curse equivalencies at befre applying t NPRO. GPA Requirements: Advanced standing applicants must have fulfilled these GPA requirements prir t applying t NPRO. Cumulative GPA f 3.00 r higher at all clleges/universities previusly attended. Science GPA f 3.00 r higher in all f the fllwing science curses cmpleted at MCTC r a direct transfer equivalent frm anther cllege. Fulfill these Science Requirements: Applicants must have earned letter grades f B r higher (P r W d nt meet this requirement) at MCTC, r the direct transfer equivalent frm anther cllege in all the fllwing science curses required fr graduatin frm NPRO, if they have been taken: - BIOL 2224 Anatmy with Lab (minimum science requirement) - BIOL 2225 Physilgy with Lab - BIOL 2226 Pathphysilgy - BIOL 2230 Micrbilgy Lecture - BIOL 2231 Micrbilgy Labratry Any f the abve cllege-level science curses fr which a grade lwer than B was earned must be repeated t earn a letter grade f straight B r higher, befre applying t NPRO. All students must have a clear criminal backgrund check with n set-asides r disqualifying cnvictins befre their first semester in the prgram, and each academic year that they are students in the Prfessinal Nursing Prgram. All Prfessinal Nursing Prgram applicants will be ntified f their prgram admissin status via U.S. Mail by May 15 th. The Admissins Prcess Admissin with advanced standing t the Prfessinal Nursing Prgram is highly cmpetitive, and the cllege may nt be able t accept all applicants even if they meet the admissin requirements. Licensed practical nurse applicants wh meet the admissin requirements and wh submit all required dcumentatin befre the applicatin deadline will be reviewed in a cmpetitive admissin prcess. If the number f qualified applicants exceeds the number f advanced-standing seats available in the Prfessinal Nursing Prgram, awarding f seats will be filled by a lttery. Qualified applicants wh are nt awarded a seat will be placed n a wait list and if any seats becme available, they will be ffered in the rder f the wait list placement. Candidates wh are nt selected frm the wait list must reapply fr admissin in the next nursing admissins cycle. Wait List If seats becme available in the Prfessinal Nursing Prgram befre the start f the Fall semester, candidates frm the wait list will be ntified by U.S. Mail r .
