3 CMG / CGC Training In La Plata Cunty, training is held n Thursdays fr 10 weeks, starting January 29 th. Class perids are 6-hurs per day, 9 a.m. t 12 nn and 1 p.m. t 4 p.m. Classes are taught by CSU Extensin campus-based and cunty-based faculty. Class infrmatin is fcused tward the nncmmercial, hme gardener. Tpics include the fllwing: CMG Prgram, Overview Plant Health Care and the Diagnstic Prcess Hw Plants Grw (basic btany) Sils, Sil Amendments, and Fertilizers Intrductin t Plant Pathlgy (plant diseases) Intrductin t Entmlgy (insects) Lawn Care and Diagnsing Lawn Prblems The Science f Planting Trees and Tree Care Weed Management T cmplete the 60 hurs f classrm training, cunties will schedule additinal classes. Please see the 2015 schedule and speak with yur cunty crdinatr fr mre infrmatin. Participants are expected t attend the 60 hurs f training. Hwever, that is nt always pssible due t illness, family emergencies, and weather-related travel issues. When missing a class, the student is respnsible fr the cntent and shuld invest extra time with the study materials. Make-up f a class at anther lcatin/date is nt an ptin. T cmplete the training as a CMG Vlunteer r Clrad Gardener Certificate Student, participants must cmplete hmewrk and attend at least eight ut f ten class days. Cllege credit is nt available fr CMG/CGC training, as the curse des nt have the rutine exams and written assignments f a curse fr credit. 4 Clrad Gardener Certificate Individuals interested in the Clrad Master Gardener training withut a vlunteer cmmitment may enrll fr the cursewrk under the Clrad Gardener Certificate ptin. The curse wrk is available fr a higher fee inlieu-f the return service. Upn cmpletin f the curse, CGC students receive the Clrad Gardener Certificate. Hwever, withut the vlunteer cmmitment, participants d nt becme Clrad Master Gardeners. The Clrad Gardener Certificate may be displayed in a place f business and used in business marketing. The Clrad Gardener Certificate is als given t CMG vlunteers upn cmpletin f the class and 50 hurs minimum vlunteer cmmitment. T receive the Clrad Gardener Certificate, students must satisfactrily cmplete the CMG training (i.e., cmplete hmewrk and attend at least eight full days f class). Participants are expected t attend all training sessins. Hwever, that is nt always pssible due t illness, family emergencies, and weather-related travel issues. When missing a class, the student is respnsible fr the cntent and shuld invest extra time with the study materials. The CMG/CGC training is equivalent t a furcredit class. In cmparisn, tuitin fr an instate resident, undergraduate, fur-credit class at CSU is $1,729 plus bks and fees. CGC Enrllment T enrll in the Clrad Gardener Certificate training, send in the Clrad Gardener Certificatin Enrllment Frm with the tuitin fees ($530). Space is limited and n a first cme (paying) basis. Individuals, wh were nt selected fr the CMG vlunteer prgram, may enrll in the Clrad Gardener Certificate Training. 4

5 The Clrad Master Gardener sm Prgram Clrad Master Gardener (CMG) vlunteers assist the cunty ffices f Clrad State University Extensin t extend research-based infrmatin n hme yard care and gardening int the cmmunity. Clrad Master Gardeners are invlved in a wide variety f ways, including assisting with ffice phne calls and walk-in custmers, staffing infrmatin bths and diagnstic clinics, writing fr lcal newspapers, and mentring yuth grups and cmmunity gardening and greening prjects. Clrad Master Gardeners enjy sharing gardening knwledge and netwrking with ther garden enthusiasts. The title "Clrad Master Gardener is a registered service mark f Clrad State University Extensin. It may be used nly in cnjunctin with fficial CSU Extensin activities. It may nt be used t infer credentials r therwise imply endrsement f a private business. It may nt be used n marketing materials f a business. Fr additinal backgrund n the CMG prgram, refer t the web site at T becme a Clrad Master Gardener participants must: 1. Apply t and be accepted int a cunty/area CMG prgram. 2. Satisfactrily cmplete the CMG training curse thrugh participating in and attending at least 80% f classes. 3. Vlunteer service: Cntinue the learning experience with 50 hurs minimum return vlunteer service in the cunty CMG prgram. Individuals wh fail t cmplete the vlunteer wrk by Octber 31 st will be billed $15 fr each uncmpleted hur, up t a maximum f $500. After the training year, 24 hurs minimum vlunteer service and 12 hurs f cntinuing educatin, per year, are required t cntinue in the prgram. 4. Recrd vlunteer hurs and educatinal training in the Vlunteer Management System (VMS) prgram. CMG Applicatin Prcess CMG prgrams perate at the cunty level, with primary supprt frm the cunty gvernment. Applicants shuld apply t their hme cunty. In special situatins (such as the wrk lcatin versus the hme lcatin), a ptential vlunteer may apply t a neighbring cunty. Hwever, it shuld be understd that cunties give pririty t cunty residents, being respnsive t the lcal cunty budget and taxpayers. Applicants wh apply t multiple cunties will nt be cnsidered. The prgram requires that the vlunteer wrk be cmpleted fr the cunty/area prgram fr which the applicant applied. Fr example, an applicatin t the Bulder Cunty CMG prgram necessitates that the vlunteer wrk be cmpleted FOR the Bulder Cunty CMG prgram. Extensin prgrams are available t all withut discriminatin. Clrad State University des nt discriminate based n race, age, clr, religin, natinal rigin r ancestry, sex, gender, disability, veteran status, genetic infrmatin, sexual rientatin, r gender identity r expressin. 6 Steps in the CMG applicatin prcess 1. Submit a cmpleted CMG applicatin frm by the applicatin deadline. The applicatin frm asks fr the fllwing items: Backgrund infrmatin n vlunteer experiences Backgrund infrmatin n gardening experience General availability fr vlunteer wrk Interest in CMG prjects Cntact infrmatin fr three references The applicatin includes a signed Vlunteer agreement cmmitting the CMG vlunteer t 50 hurs minimum vlunteer wrk in exchange fr the training. 2. Backgrund Check Clrad State University requires backgrund checks, criminal and mtr vehicle, f all new vlunteers. A criminal recrd r pr driving recrd des nt bar an individual as a vlunteer, but will be cnsidered as it relates t the specifics f the vlunteer psitin. The ptential vlunteer receives an frm the CSU Human Resurces with a htlink t the screening cmpany, HireRight. The vlunteer lgs int a secure site, enters their scial security number and ther persnal infrmatin and lgs ff. The university s IT staff has cnfidence in the security and cnfidentiality f the HireRight system. HireRight cnducts a natinal backgrund check, including criminal and mtr vehicle, and shares the results with CSU Human Resurces. Applicants cannt be accepted int the prgram until CSU Human resurces gives apprval based n the backgrund check. If the applicant elects t ignre the frm CSU Human Resurces r elects t nt prvide HireRight with the needed infrmatin, the applicant will nt be cnsidered as a CSU Extensin vlunteer. crdinatr. Primary cnsideratin is based n: 1) Interest in vlunteer wrk 2) Availability fr vlunteer wrk 3) Peple skills (i.e., ability t assist Extensin in hme hrticulture educatinal effrts), and 4) Gardening experience. The Clrad Gardener Certificate ptin (t participate in the class fr a higher fee withut any vlunteer cmmitment) prvides an educatinal pprtunity fr thse nt interested in r available fr vlunteer wrk. Staff will send cnfidential reference letters r s t the references listed n the applicatin. At least tw must be returned befre the applicant can be accepted int the CMG prgram. 4. Interview Mst cunties invite applicants t an infrmal interview, which gives the applicant a chance t learn mre abut the CMG Prgram and ask questins abut training and vlunteer wrk. 5. Applicants will be ntified if they were selected fr the CMG Prgram. In cunties with a larger ppulatin base, significantly mre peple apply than can be accmmdated. Applicants wh are nt selected as CMG vlunteers may elect t enrll as Clrad Gardener Certificate Students (nn-vlunteer enrllments) r reapply in the future. 6. Pay prgram fees If accepted int a lcal CMG Prgram, payment f prgram fees is the final enrllment step. If the applicant des nt receive the frm CSU Human Resurces with the link fr HireRight within 2 weeks f submitting the applicatin, cntact the lcal CMG 6

7 Crrectly stated, interested individuals apply t becme a CMG vlunteer representing CSU Extensin. The decisin t accept r nt accept any individual as a CMG vlunteers is the right f CSU Extensin. Additinally, CMG vlunteers serve at the request f Clrad State University Extensin. This request can be withdrawn at any time. Tuitin and Fees Tuitin, as a CMG vlunteer is $170. Refer t details abve abut textbk ptins r printing materials nline. In cmparisn, the Clrad Master Gardener/Clrad Gardener Certificate Training is cmparable t a fur-credit class. CSU Tuitin fr a fur-credit class is $1,729 plus fees and bks. Schlarships Schlarships are available fr individuals n limited incmes. (Refer t applicatin fr details.) Fees fr CMG Vlunteers wh are selected t receive a schlarship are $85, with the student purchasing r printing the textbk r class handuts. A limited number f schlarships are available in a cunty. Selectin f schlarship recipients will be based n CMG selectin criteria, including 1) interest in vlunteer wrk, 2) availability fr vlunteer wrk, 3) peple skills (i.e., ability t assist Extensin in hme hrticulture educatinal effrts) and 4) gardening experience. As a CMG vlunteer applicant, d nt send fees with the applicatin. If yu are selected fr the prgram, yu will be billed. Fees must be paid at least 14 day prir t the starting f class r enrllment will be cancelled. 7
