1 Secndary Applicatin Instructins General Infrmatin The NYMC applicatin prcess includes the fllwing steps: 1. Submit NYMC secndary applicatin including all required letters f evaluatin. 2. Pay $120 applicatin fee OR prvide cnfirmatin f yur eligibility fr the AAMC-spnsred Fee Assistance Prgram (FAP) in which case the NYMC applicatin fee is waived. 3. Register and cmplete CASPer TM (Cmputer-based Assessment fr Sampling Persnal Characteristics). 4. Submit any additinal infrmatin requested by the NYMC Office f Admissins. Additinal infrmatin abut the NYMC applicatin prcess: Apply and cmplete early! The earlier yur applicatin is cmplete, the earlier we can review yur file. Als be sure t register and cmplete CASPer TM early ( ALL applicants (including re-applicants t NYMC) are required t take the CASPer TM test. Please be aware yu are still eligible t mve thrugh ur review prcess even if yu have nt yet cmpleted CASPer TM s lng as yu have registered t take the test OR yu have cmpleted the test and yur scre is pending. Upn review f yur applicatin, yu may be invited fr an n-campus interview anytime during ur interview seasn which runs frm late September thrugh April. Applicatins are reviewed cntinually thrughut the applicatin cycle. Nte: We d nt cnduct Skype interviews. Yu can check the status f yur applicatin nline thrughut the applicatin cycle by using yur assigned lgin name and passwrd. Rather than call the Office f Admissins inquiring abut yur status, please use this nline tl. It is the mst efficient way t find ut this infrmatin. Please reprt any change in yur name, mailing address r address directly t AMCAS. If yu think there may be cnfusin abut the name used n yur letters f evaluatin, yu can alert us by sending us an at [email protected], but any fficial name change must be reprted thrugh AMCAS.

2 A few reminders abut MCAT and pre-requisite cursewrk requirements: NYMC will accept scres frm bth the ld and new MCAT fr the applicatin cycle. The nly requirement is yu must have taken the MCAT between January 2014 and September MCAT scres frm tests taken prir t January 2014 will nt be accepted. In the interest f fairness t all applicants, there are n exceptins t these MCAT test date requirements. All curses ffered in satisfactin f the requirements fr admissin must be taken in, r accepted as transfer credits by, an accredited cllege in the United States r Canada and must be acceptable t that institutin tward a baccalaureate degree in the arts r sciences. (This includes advanced placement curses taken in high schl.) Please be sure yu have successfully cmpleted the fllwing curse requirements, r have them in prgress: General Bilgy with lab, 2 semesters (r equivalent) General Chemistry with lab, 2 semesters (r equivalent) Organic Chemistry with lab, 1 semester (r equivalent) Physics, 2 semesters with lab (r equivalent) English, 2 semesters (r equivalent r successful cmpletin f the English requirements f yur undergraduate institutin) Bichemistry, 1 semester with r withut lab (r equivalent) Imprtant nte abut the Bichemistry requirement If yu are still an undergraduate and have nt yet taken Bichemistry, we will still review yur applicatin if Bichemistry is listed as a curse yu anticipate taking prir t graduatin. If yu are accepted t the Schl f Medicine, we will verify yur successful cmpletin f this curse n yur final transcript. If yu are still an undergraduate and are unable t fit Bichemistry int yur schedule prir t graduatin, we will still review yur applicatin if yu have already taken Organic II. 3 Secndary Applicatin Instructins This sectin utlines the specific steps f the NYMC secndary applicatin. If yu are nt prepared t cmplete the secndary applicatin at this time, yu may begin it nw and cmplete it at a later time. Yu may begin the secndary applicatin withut having registered fr r cmpleted CASPer TM. Please be sure t use the exact name yu submitted t AMCAS at all times and that all ther submitted infrmatin is accurate. All required dcuments must be submitted by midnight (EST) January 31, Step 1: Letters f Evaluatin Required letters f evaluatin must be received thrugh the AMCAS Letter Service. Optinal letters may be sent thrugh the AMCAS Letter Service, r via PDF attachment t the NYMC Office f Admissins address ([email protected]). We d nt accept hard-cpy letters f evaluatin sent thrugh the US Pstal Service. All letters must be n fficial letterhead and signed by the letter writer. (Electrnic signatures are accepted.) Please request yur AMCAS ID be included n each f yur letters. Please be sure the same name used n yur AMCAS applicatin is used fr letters submitted n yur behalf Re-applicants must re-submit letters f evaluatin. If yu graduated prir t 2014 (this des nt include 2014), and are unable t btain letters f evaluatin frm yur undergraduate r graduate schl, we will accept ther academically riented letters. Hwever, keep in mind prviding us with the requested letters will strengthen yur applicatin. Required Undergraduate Schl Letters f Evaluatin Pre-medical Advisry Cmmittee Letter Instructins If yu are submitting a cmmittee letter frm yur undergraduate schl, please check the apprpriate bx and enter the name f the cllege yu attend(ed). A single letter f evaluatin frm the cmmittee is preferred and will fulfill all undergraduate letters f evaluatin requirements. A Cmmittee letter des nt require the names f individual letter writers but must be signed by at least ne f its members.

4 Individual Letter Instructins If yur cllege des nt have a premedical cmmittee, a ttal f three (3) letters f evaluatin frm undergraduate faculty are required. The names f the individual letters writers must be listed n yur AMCAS applicatin. Tw (2) letters must be frm science faculty wh either taught yu in a class r supervised independent research fr which yu received credit tward yur science GPA. Acceptable science curses fr purpses f letters f evaluatin include: bilgy, chemistry, physics, bi-medical engineering, r bi-engineering, etc. (Math is nt cnsidered a science curse fr purpses f letters f evaluatin.) The third required letter f evaluatin must be frm a nn-science curse. One (1) f yur three letters f evaluatin must be frm the department in which yu majred as identified n yur AMCAS applicatin - whether science r nn-science. Fr each letter please enter the name and title f the letter writer, the curse name and number, the name f yur undergraduate r graduate cllege where yu tk the curse, and the number f credit hurs earned. It is very imprtant yu check the apprpriate bx t indicate which letter(s) is frm yur undergraduate majr. Required Graduate Schl Letters f Evaluatin If yu have cmpleted r are currently pursuing a graduate degree, in additin t the undergraduate letters utlined abve the fllwing graduate premedical advisry cmmittee OR individual graduate letters f evaluatin are required: Premedical Advisry Cmmittee Letter Instructins If yu are submitting a cmmittee letter frm yur graduate schl, please check the apprpriate bx and enter the name f the graduate schl yu attend(ed). One (1) letter f evaluatin is required frm the Premedical Advisry Cmmittee f yur graduate prgram. A single letter f evaluatin frm the cmmittee is preferred and will fulfill all graduate letters f evaluatin requirements. A cmmittee letter des nt require the names f individual letter writers but must be signed by at least ne f its members. Individual Letter Instructins One (1) letter frm a faculty member in yur graduate department is required wh has either taught yu in a graduate class r supervised independent research fr which yu received graduate credit. A letter frm a graduate science faculty member can substitute fr ne (1) undergraduate science letter.

5 If yu have just begun a graduate prgram in Summer/Fall 2016, ne (1) letter f evaluatin frm faculty in yur graduate department is required upn cmpletin f yur first semester. This requirement als applies if yu are enrlled in nn-degree granting graduate prgram. This letter may be submitted via the AMCAS Letter Service r the letter writer may submit it directly via t [email protected]. Step 3: Pay Applicatin Fee -OR- Prvide FAP Dcumentatin fr NYMC Fee Waiver A $120 nn-refundable applicatin fee is required in rder t prcess yur applicatin. 7 STEP 4: Register and Cmplete CASPer TM All applicants (including re-applicants t NYMC) are required t take the CASPer TM test. Be sure t register and cmplete CASPer TM early at Yu are still eligible t mve thrugh ur review prcess even if yu have nt cmpleted CASPer TM s lng as yu have registered t take the test OR yu have cmpleted the test and yur scre is pending. What is CASPer? (Cmputer-based Assessment fr Sampling Persnal Characteristics) CASPer is a cmputer-based situatinal judgment test designed t evaluate cre persnal characteristics cnsidered essential fr students t be successful in medical schl and ultimately, as practicing physicians. Sme f these include prfessinalism, ethical grunding, empathy, cmpassin, and cultural sensitivity. CASPer can be taken anywhere yu can access a cmputer with audi capabilities and a reliable Internet cnnectin in a quiet lcatin. CASPer cnsists f a series f hypthetical everyday situatins presented thrugh vide r text frmat. Each situatin relates t ne r mre persnal characteristics. Examinees are asked t prvide brief typed respnses t a series f questins asked abut each situatin. Yu are rated n the cntent f yur respnses nly; yu are nt rated n spelling, grammar r sentence-structure. CASPer results are cnsidered a reliable and predictive tl fr an admissins cmmittee t bradly assess the persnal attributes f an applicant. It als may help applicants prepare fr the Multiple Mini-Interview (MMI) frmat as many f these same attributes are evaluated in the MMI prcess. Why has NYMC incrprated CASPer int ur secndary applicatin? NYMC places a high value n persnal characteristics which we believe are essential t becme a capable and cmpassinate physician. CASPer is cnsidered an bjective tl t evaluate an applicant s persnal attributes. We believe using CASPer TM makes the applicatin review prcess fairer fr the applicant. The incrpratin f CASPer int ur hlistic review prcess represents the cmmitment f New Yrk Medical Cllege t evaluate each applicant as an individual weighing persnal attributes in equal measure with academic metrics and fundatinal experiences. What d I need t d t take CASPer? Advanced registratin is required. CASPer is administered by an external testing cmpany Altus Assessments. There is a test fee assciated with CASPer which is nt part f the NYMC applicatin fee. This fee is paid directly t the testing cmpany upn registratin and cnsists f a $10 test fee + a $10 distributin fee fr each schl yu designate t receive yur CAPer scre. These fees are waived fr applicants eligible fr the AAMC-FAP. Yu will need t cnfirm yur FAP apprval upn registratin fr CASPer.
