1 Backgrund UWS Academic Mentring Prgram 2013 Evaluatin Summary Reprt August 2014 The UWS Academic Mentring Prgram recgnises that mentring is an imprtant mechanism fr academic career develpment and cntributes t building a high-perfrming, cmpetent and cllegial wrkfrce. It prvides a career develpment pprtunity fr Academic staff t braden their knwledge, skills, capabilities and experience. The Prgram supprts the University s strategic gal t retain, reward and develp its staff, is endrsed by the Vice-Chancellr and Executive, and is funded by the University. The Prgram is crdinated by the Office f Organisatinal Develpment and resurces and tls n mentring and career planning are accessed frm a Mentring website. The Prgram was intrduced in 2010 with 26 academic staff (13 mentring pairs) participating frm acrss the Schls and Research Centres and Institutes. In 2011, 42 academic staff (21 mentring pairs) and in 2012 a further 42 academic staff (21 mentring pairs) participated. The 2013 Prgram In academic staff participated (19 pairs). The UWS Academic Mentring Prgram is a ten mnth prgram with bth Mentrs and Mentees attending three half-day wrkshps at the cmmencement f the prgram (March), at mid-term (August) and at the end f the prgram (Nvember). Between wrkshps Mentrs and Mentees meet n a regular basis. Mentees are drawn frm early and mid-career Academics nminated by their Deans and Mentrs are members f the prfessriate r senir Academic staff, als nminated by their Deans. Mentrs and Mentees prvided feedback n the value f participating in the structured mentring prgram. Examples f reprted benefits and utcmes include: gaining insight int the different disciplines and Schls and hw they functin; enabling pprtunities fr cllabrative research; develping crss-schl partnerships; develping jint research strategies; prviding and receiving supprt and advice regarding prmtin; develping skills in writing grant applicatins and identifying ther funding surces; assistance with Academic Develpment Prgram and Schlarship applicatins; assistance with writing jurnal publicatins; gaining a fresh perspective n career develpment; and prmting the transfer f knwledge. 1 P age

4 Appendix Academic Mentring Prgram Evaluatin Summary Prgram Facilitatrs: Aggie Lim and Lene Cripps Number f Participants: PREVIOUS MENTORING EXPERIENCE 17% f respndents have previusly participated in a frmal mentring scheme 58% f respndents have previusly participated in an infrmal mentring relatinship 25% f respndents have nt had any previus mentring experience 2. FREQUENCY OF CONTACT WITH MENTORING PARTNER 77% f respndents met at least mnthly 33% f respndents met less than nce a mnth 3. FOCUS AREAS Mst time was spent n career planning (37%) and develping research capacity (30%). Other key areas f discussin were persnal develpment and managing thers. 4. STRATEGIES EMPLOYED TO SUSTAIN THE MENTORING RELATIONSHIP Mentring was fund t be mst useful and beneficial with: regular (frequent) meetings meetings scheduled in advance having a plan in place with specific gals and tasks t fcus n using the meeting tls and templates t help fcus and reflect n their meetings and career plans. 5. BENEFITS OF THE MENTORING RELATIONSHIP TO SELF, THE SCHOOL OR TO UWS Mentring pairs enjyed the experience f being matched with a Mentr/Mentee utside f their wn schl and having an pen and candid relatinship Mentees have the pprtunity t fcus n themselves and their career needs under the guidance f an experienced academic Mentees gained cnfidence in their abilities as researchers Mentrs are able t assist Mentees with starting r managing their PhD Mentrs help assist with develping skills in writing jurnal articles, grant applicatins, ADP r schlarship applicatins Mentring pairs have nticed an imprvement in relatinships with clleagues frm their wn schl 7. SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVING THE MENTORING EXPERIENCE Being lcated n the same campus Set mre face t face meetings, at least mnthly Set the first meeting quickly and bk subsequent meetings int diaries Have the pprtunity t self-nminate fr the prgram Current Mentrs culd recmmend clleagues. 8. OTHER COMMENTS It was very pleasing t help smene t evaluate their wrk, investigate slutins and cme up with a plan. My Mentr helped t prvide sme directin t my career decisin plans. We started a research cllabratin that will cntinue beynd the mentring prgram. It was great t see my Mentee grw prfessinally. Valuable suggestins prvided by my Mentr, bth as a senir academic staff member and as a female academic. Great satisfactin frm supprting a yung clleague. It was gd t speak with a member f staff wh has much greater experience f UWS and its prcesses. I feel a real sense f achievement at helping my Mentee with their PhD. 5 P age
