Every Chief in Canada is entitled to be a member of the Assembly. The National Chief is elected by the Chiefs in Canada, who in turn are elected by their citizens. The AFN represents over 630 First Nations communities across Canada. The role and function of the AFN is to serve as a national delegated forum for determining and harmonizing effective collective and co-operative measures on the priorities identified by First Nations. Under the leadership of the National Chief and the AFN Executive Committee, who oversee targeted portfolios, organizational activity has included advancing Aboriginal and Treaty Rights, Economic Development, Education, Languages and Literacy, Health, Housing, Social Development, Justice, Taxation, Land Claims, Environmental Stewardship, and an array of issues that are of common concern. The AFN selects sponsors whose objectives are congruent and respectful of AFN portfolio objectives. The Chiefs meet annually to set national policy and direction through resolution. AFN AGA 2015 The 2015 AFN AGA will also be an opportunity for Chiefs to come together and discuss issues of concern to First Nation governments and citizens and to mandate the AFN to undertake work to advance the rights and interests of First Nations. The Assembly typically attracts up to 1500 delegates to the various events held throughout the week. 4

To this end, the 2015 AGA will include a number of key venues for First Nation leaders, including regional caucus sessions, strategy and planning sessions, and the resolutions process. Delegates will also be provided with plenary presentations and reporting from the National Chief the AFN Executive Committee, and AFN Tri-Council. As such, the 2015 AGA will present a vital occasion for the consolidation of national priorities, leadership, and decision-making. The Caring Society The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society proudly works with First Nations and non-aboriginal partners nationally and internationally to ensure First Nations children and their families have equitable opportunities to grow up safely at home, get a good education, be healthy and proud of who they are. We believe in the power of everyone regardless of income so we developed 7 free ways to make a difference for First Nations children. Join the reconciliation movement by learning more about: I am a Witness Witness a historic human rights case helping 163,000 First Nations children get culturally-based and equitable services and grow up safely at home. Jordan s Principle Ensure First Nations children can access government services on the same terms as other children. Shannen's Dream - Be inspired by teen youth education leader, Shannen Koostachin and help ensure First Nations children get proper schools and education. Touchstones of Hope - Principles to guide organizations and individuals in reconciliation. Child and Youth Engagement - Learn how to respectfully engage young people.
