The Centenary is an important milestone not only in the history of CIArb but in the global profession of arbitration. The Institute has come a long way since it was established in 1915 in London as a small association whose purpose was, as one of its founders, HC Emery, said "to raise the status of Arbitration to the dignity of a distinct and recognised position as one of the learned professions, to what is now a global network of over 13,000 members in 120 countries operating in over 250 commercial sectors. As the world s oldest established arbitration association, it remains unique in providing the gold standard in training and the globally recognised accreditation of arbitrators worldwide. This year marks not only the 100th Anniversary of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb) but also the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of the Australian Branch of CIArb (CIArb Australia). It is also five years since the International Arbitration Act 1974 (Cth) (IAA) was amended to strengthen Australia s position as a proarbitration seat for international dispute resolution. As part of Sydney Arbitration Week, we are marking these milestones with a series of events. On Monday, 23 November we will be hosting the Semi Finals and Grand Final of the inaugural CIArb Australia International Arbitration Moot, which is open to law students and young graduates. This will be followed by a mid-evening Sydney Harbour Cruise with an indigenous theme. On Tuesday, 24 November, in partnership with the Business Law Section of the Law Council of Australia and the Australian Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, we will be presenting the 3rd International Arbitration Conference: "Opportunities and Challenges for Dispute Resolution in the Next Century" at the Sofitel Wentworth. The conference will feature an impressive line-up of prominent and distinguished speakers, from Australia and around the world. The year long celebrations will culminate with the CIArb Centenary Dinner on the evening of Tuesday, 24 November at the Museum of Contemporary Art where the Chief Justice of Australia, the Hon Robert French AC will deliver the after-dinner address. Located on the rooftop of the Museum of Contemporary Art, delegates will partake in a three-course fine dining experience with uninterrupted views across Sydney Harbour, the Opera House and the city skyline. The Dinner will be preceded by an exclusive viewing of the MCA Collection, an exhibition of contemporary art from across Australia and around the world and pre-dinner drinks and canapes on the Harbourside Terrace.
