2 Robert L. Mackey Founder/President Who Are We In 2011, former NFL Linebacker, Robert L. Mackey founded The Lydia W. Smith Foundation, known as Lydia Smith Sickle Cell Foundation, in honor of his mother who has been surviving with sickle cell for 20+ years after being given a life expectancy of 7 years with a diagnosis in April 22nd was Mrs. Smith s 59th Birthday and will mark her 21st year of survivorship. After witnessing firsthand the effects of the disease, physically and financially, Robert knew he had to do something. My mom, Lydia Smith, and my aunt both suffer from sickle cell. Seeing their pain has changed my life and given me a purpose to do my best to alleviate the suffering of others with sickle cell. Robert L. Mackey The Lydia Smith Sickle Cell Foundation (LSSCF), a 501(c)3 non profit organization that provide financial relief for patients with sickle cell disease. The foundation focuses on providing direct care needs to patients has helped hundreds of families nationwide who suffer from sickle cell. LSSCF s mission is to make sure families have access to needed education and quality of life services that extend and enhance the lives of their loved ones suffering with this disease. One of the main avenues through which the Foundation helps those in need is the Lydia Smith Sickle Cell Patient Assistance Fund. The fund is currently in use at the University of Illinois Hospital & Health Sciences System (UIH), Ann & Robert Lurie Children s Hospital in Chicago and coming to Levine's Children's Hospital in Charlotte. Also, the Developing Young Leaders in Research & Outreach program which helps cultivate teenagers to become physicians, scientists, researchers, nurses, among other healthcare careers.
