4 Event Details For 21 years, the ABC 7 Gibbons 5K Run & 3K Walk has proven itself as a landmark event in the Chicagoland area and is a major fundraiser for the Leukemia Research Foundation. Each June, more than 2,500 people gather along Chicago s lakefront to run, walk and raise funds in search of a cure for leukemia, lymphoma and all blood cancers in memory of Jim Gibbons. Jim was a highly-respected 25- year veteran investigative reporter at ABC 7 when he succumbed to leukemia in This years 21st annual celebration is set for Thursday, June 18 in Chicago s Grant Park. ABC s Janet Davies and Frank Mathie have been the honorary co-chairs since the event inception and will lead many ABC7 on-air personalities with event coverage including on-site interviews and broadcast of the event start LIVE during the ABC7 6:00 pm news to an audience of millions. ABC7 Gibbons 5K Run and 3K Walk will also host a kick-off party on in May that is exclusive to sponsors, key volunteers, major donors and VIP's. The actual event consists of the 5K Chip Timed Run, a 5K Fun Run and a 3K Walk with a festival type atmosphere. Participants enjoy food from Chicago restaurants, complimentary refreshments, live music from one of Chicago s well known bands, and the opportunity to visit the many partner tents on-site. This creates a great atmosphere for the participants to interact. With all this event has to offer, it becomes much more than just another race.

5 About Us In 1946, the Leukemia Research Foundation (LRF) was established in Chicago. Leukemia was a well-known but not well-understood disease. Since that time 69 years ago, the Leukemia Research Foundation has raised more than $60 million in pursuit of its mission: Dedicated to conquering all blood cancers by funding research into their causes and cures and enriching the quality of life of those touched by these diseases. Our strategy to achieve these vitally important ambitions is to fund worldwide medical research into the causes and cures of blood cancers, provide patient financial assistance and offer educational/emotional support programs. Worldwide medical research - each year, it is the Foundation s goal to grant approximately $1 million to medical research. The LRF exclusively funds New Investigators - individuals who are beginning to establish their own laboratories and are no longer under the tutelage of a senior scientist mentor. Patient financial assistance - the financial assistance and support programs of the LRF are available to patients and families who reside within a 100-mile radius of Chicago and the state of Illinois. On average, we provide $200,000 per year in financial assistance. Educational support services - for patients, family members, caregivers and medical professionals. These conferences, including the Treatment Options for Blood Cancer Patients Conference, the Town Hall Meeting, and Town Hall Meeting in Spanish, are offered free of charge. They provide opportunities for direct dialogue between patients and prominent hematology/oncology and transplant specialists to discuss treatment options and procedures.
