1 Southern Vales Christian College SVCC Newsflash Our team Flinders Science & Engineering Challenge 2015 From the Principal I would like to welcome everyone in the College Community to Term 3, in particular to the new students and their families: Lea Wagner (Year 9) who is a visiting exchange student from Germany, Amy Tromp (Year 8 Morphett Vale), Caleb Buckleigh (Year 8 Aldinga), Lucas Oswald (Foundation Morphett Vale), Nicole Calland (Year 10) and Natasha Stevens, (Year 10) who joined us in Week 9 of Term 2. We pray your time at the College will have a significant impact in your learning journey and understanding of God s place in your life. Philipians 1:6 And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns. Mrs Jenny Nelson Principal Science & Engineering Challenge A nervous group of Year 9 and 10 students attended the Science and Engineering Challenge at Flinders University s new Tonsley campus on the first day of the term. It was a competition between schools and a number of well established independent and public schools competed. The students competed in various tasks including building bridges which were tested in front of the entire audience. Others built a suspension system for a mars-rover, a hover craft, a robotic type hand and also shelters which would withstand certain outdoor elements. The students worked on the tasks for long periods of time and they had to build and re-fine their models. They were supported by retired engineers who were very encouraging. The SVCC students felt that we had mixed success with all the various tasks and this uncertainty prevailed until the tallies were read out at the end of the challenging day. The nervousness of the day gave way to sheer excitement when we discovered that the College had finished in second place. This is quite an achievement as it is only the the third year that the College has been involved with the Science and Engineering Challenge. We managed to beat a number of prestigious schools who have been long time participants of the event. Well done to all the students who were involved. Mr Hugh Serfontein, Head of Secondary, Morphett Vale Issue 11 Week 2 Term 3

5 Christian Schools Australia Conference 2015 STAFF NEWS On Monday 20 July, before the school term began, our staff members joined 1100 teachers and school staff from Christian Schools around South Australia at Tyndale Christian College for the biennial CSA Conference. Due to the large number of attendees there were two streams of events allowing everyone to share in the student led worship and devotion time, before heading into the various workshops. Key note speaker, Karl Faase, spoke hope in regard to what is happening in our culture and its relationship with Christianity. His presentation gave many statistics that show that God is well and truly working in our generation. Presentations and more information about Karl can be found on his website: During the day our staff members attended elective workshops on various topics, year levels and issues of interest. It was a significant time of catching up with teachers from across South Australia, but also developing networks and sharing and developing new ideas. Heidi Scriven conducted a Biology network meeting that could become an ongoing group, meeting both online and in person. Within just a few hours the online network had begun. Michelle West conducted a Visual Art Critical Analysis workshop with Art teachers from around the state. Rebekah Cook presented a workshop on the topic of developing essential questions as part of the Understanding by Design. Developing essential questions has been a significant area of development for our teaching staff in the UbD process. Each workshop was well attended and the feedback was particularly positive. We thank Tyndale Christian School for their hospitality and for going above and beyond to serve the Christian school community of South Australia. We appreciate the positive investment made by CSA for Christian School staff members to help building a strong future for our schools. Mrs Rebekah Cook Director of Teaching & Learning Please continue to pray for Chris Snape and his family following the sad loss of their son. Finance Officer Welcome to Tina Oswald who is our new Finance Officer. Tina will be taking over Accounts Payable and Wages. Tina has recently returned to SA with her husband and two children. Please make her feel very welcome. Tina s son Lucas will be attending the Foundation class at Morphett Vale. Learning Support Teacher Welcome to Val Russell who is joining our Support Staff team. Val has worked in the Learning Support field for many years including working with Speld. Val is experienced in an Inquiry approach to learning and in Jolly Phonics. Val will be working closely with Amanda Bone. Learning Support Coordinator Amanda Bone will commence the role of Learning Support Coordinator for the College. She will now be overseeing Learning Support for both campuses. After servicing our College with dedication, Sue Williams is increasing her hours as Special Education Consultant with Down Syndrome SA/Learning For All. We pray every blessing on her future plans and thank her for the innovative changes she has made in our Learning Support area. Primary Performing Arts Cath Grant is taking 12 months leave to take up a full time position teaching Foundation at another school. We thank Cath for all her work and pray every success on this new season in her life. We are pleased to announce Katie Rex will lead the Primary Performing Arts across the College including at Morphett Vale on Fridays. 6 Year 10 Work Experience CAREER CORNER University Open Days Tabor Adelaide Saturday 15 August 10 am - 2 pm Students will be able to speak with Tabor staff about their career destination in Teaching, Music, Creative Writing, International Health & Development, Ministry, Theology, TESOL, Training and Assessment, Counselling and Youth Work. There will be Campus Tours, a sausage sizzle and more! In Week 10, Term 2, the Year 10 students completed their annual work experience. Students went to a variety of businesses throughout Adelaide. Work experience not only ties in with the Personal Learning Plan subject, but is a great opportunity for the students to gain knowledge of their selected workplace and the expectations of that career. Here are a few of their experiences: Beaumont Tiles: I found the experience helpful for me because I got to see how the designers help the customers out with picking their tiles for their house. I discovered that there is more to interior designing which I would like to learn about. I would like to thank the interior designer for an enjoyable week at work experience. Samanatha Work experience was a great opportunity to test and develop my ability to apply myself to a range of set tasks in a new workplace. It was a remarkable opportunity to see how the little jobs interconnect to form one giant workforce of colleagues successfully running a business. Kane I worked at IT & Computers. It was a friendly environment where I felt comfortable to ask any questions; it was a really great opportunity to learn new things. I got to do tasks like uninstalling malicious software as well as actually building a computer by myself. Emma I worked at Prescott College Southern, for a week. I worked with kids from Foundation to Year 11. Although it was nerve racking at first, I did learn a lot from the fulfilling experience. Shae My work experience placement was at Morphett Vale Primary School. This was a very good experience for me as it did not only help me realise that this is what I want to do in the future, but it helped me with my confidence. Niamh For my work experience I worked with a tiler/maintenance man at Eldercare. I found my work experience enjoyable because there was always a physical activity to do so I was never bored.
