1 Southern Vales Christian College College Community As Term 1 draws to a close we look back on a very successful term. One real highlight has been our community events involving parents, such as Friday Family Fun, Sports Days, assemblies and parent-teacher interviews. It was encouraging to observe the quality conversations between parents and teachers during the Primary parentteacher interviews this week. I wish to sincerely thank the staff and parents who invested time into these conversations. There are three critical elements that are built by these conversations between parents and teachers: Knowing Each Other Conversations that develop through parent/teacher interviews and community events and the day to day contact with staff move us into relationship. There can be no partnership without time spent together. This emerging personal connection helps us to respond to each other, rather than react to situations. Understanding The personal context of individual lives is critical to developing empathy. Greater knowledge of the issues within someone s life causes us to interpret situations more accurately. The personalising of learning cannot occur where the personal dimension of someone s life is not known. The time we all invest in developing parent /teacher relationships creates and grows our connection as the development of trust is the most important outcome of these conversations. we refuse to be disloyal or to betray someone when we have the opportunity. The level of trust that exists between parents and teachers has a direct influence on successful student health and achievement. It is my hope that we continue to invest in conversations that build understanding, deepen our knowledge of each other, and deepen our trust of each other. Thank you again for making the investment in attending Primary parentteacher interviews this week. We look forward to having the same positive conversations during the Secondary parent-teacher interviews during the first week of next term. Primary Sports Day Primary students, teachers, parents and friends enjoyed some fantastic weather and high-level, fun-spirited competition at the Primary Sports Day on Friday 27 March at the Bowker Street Athletics Field. Highlights from the day included the parents' support in the novelty events; great individual achievements from some of our "gun" athletes; and again strong positive encouragement for others. This event is becoming known for the supportive atmosphere. It was particularly exciting to see students cheering on their competitors, simply because they were able to appreciate the display of athletic prowess. Trust This trust is beyond being on the same page. It is also beyond the notion that we have someone s best interest at heart. The real indicator of trust is that Psalm 133:1 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! Mrs Jenny Nelson, Principal Congratulations to Flynn, who won the competition for the 5th year in a row. Mr Craig Davidson Primary Sports Day Coordinator Issue 5 Week 10 Term 1

The players and coaches looked great in their brand new netball dresses and tops. We had an Under 9 and Under 16 team both coached by Donna Smith, an Under 11 team coached by Robyn Hay and an Under 13 team coached by Michele Scott. Our students all represented our College very well by showing great sportsmanship with a positive attitude. Our Under 9 team were made up of many students who had never played netball before and others with only a small amount of experience. They improved greatly over the season Photos by Grace, Year 9, Aldinga and supported each other well in learning to play as a team. Our Under 11 and Under 13 teams both played very well all season and went on to win the grand finals. The Under 16 team were a strong playing group all season and finished second on the ladder at the end of the season heading into finals. They only just missed out on playing in the grand final. All teams and players were a credit to the College and all the coaches involved thoroughly enjoyed leading our players. Congratulations to everyone for a successful summer netball season. 3 SACSA Interschool Athletics Carnival On Thursday 26 March approximately 50 of our secondary students travelled north to compete in the SACSA Interschool Athletics Carnival at Santos Stadium. Results were mixed throughout the day, as our intrepid students competed against some very strong state-level athletes from other Christian Schools. The SVCC team pulled together nicely to achieve some excellent individual results. Despite the College team having a small number of competitors and it being our first year as part of Division 1, we were able to finish an impressive 4th place in the Challenge Shield - which is a system based on points scored, divided by number of students at the school. As always, we were extremely proud of all of our athletes, particularly those who were flexible and helpful on the day. All of our students were encouraging and supportive of one another and celebrated a range of individual successes. Special thanks to the teachers who trained athletes in the mornings during the weeks leading up to competition; and to the teachers and parents who supported and helped out on the day. Mr Craig Davidson, PE Faculty Year 8 Aquatics Day On Tuesday 31 March, the Year 8 students from both campuses were treated to an Aquatics Day. They had a great time learning to surf and kayak. Mr Thomson enjoyed demonstrating his surfing skills to the students. [email protected] All correspondence to: PO Box 70 Morphett Vale SA 5162

In particular, the Romanowski family for providing a BBQ throughout the day; the Field family for provision of delicious cakes and snacks; Cassie Davidson and Charlie Nicholson for their amazing photography skills and James Cogdell- Baird for the incredible Bar 9 coffee. Thanks also to the maintenance, admin and support staff for their tireless work in preparing and setting up on the day. Thank you to the teachers who worked with their classes to prepare them for new novelty events. And lastly thanks to the Primary students, whose outstanding behaviour and consistent effort throughout the day made it all worthwhile. 6 Southern Schools Interschool Chess Tournament On Tuesday 31 March, the College hosted a Southern Schools Interschool Chess Tournament that was facilitated by Chess Schools SA. Head coach, Mato Jelic, was the main adjudicator. The tournament was attended by two teams of SVCC students as well as students from six southern suburbs schools. We were excited that one of our students, Pasquale (Year 5), won the competition. Team 1 from SVCC placed sixth and Team 2 placed second. Thank you to our students who so admirably represented our College. Visiting families and friends from the other schools expressed appreciation for how welcome they felt. We look forward to hosting another chess tournament in June. Ms Rebecca Napier Extended Learning Coach Term 1 Spanish, Hola Amigos! Drama Props Needed We are seeking your help to decorate our stage for the 2015 Stage 1 & 2 Drama Moderated Performance in Week 10 of Term 2. The students are performing in a Commedia Italian theatre style farce/slapstick romantic comedy. We would be very grateful for any of the following items: * Roman/Italian busts/sculptures/ paintings (ANYTHING remotely Italian Renaissance) * Curtains, preferably a dark colour (crimson or dark green) * Tall outdoor vases/pots (terracotta or glazed/coloured), preferably a matching pair * Italian fresco/style outdoor setting (bench/single seat) Thank you all so very much. We are grateful for all offers. I can do pick ups! Mr Peter Kalfas, Drama The Spanish team, Lynley Muller, Taija Shemeikka and Gonzalo Figueroa, felt blessed to teach such wonderful students in Term 1. Our focus has been Us and Others Around Us and we explored descriptions and basic greetings, numbers and words. Heading into Term 2, we will be studying the topic Going Places, and have been given the opportunity to communicate with a Sponsor Child from Bolivia. We will be setting up Word Walls and Sponsor Walls; if you have a chance, you are welcome to visit the Spanish classrooms and have a look! One of the highlights this term has been Mrs Paget s Aldinga Foundation class, who have shown amazing enthusiasm and language learning skills. They are pictured with their completed Spanish Easter cards and Conquistador hats and pictured receiving their Spanish Awards. Mrs Muller and Miss Shemeikka have been wonderful at providing a wide range of language opportunities for our students. Parents and caregivers, please keep encouraging your child/ren to make the most of their Spanish language learning. It is not only invaluable for their development and cultural understanding; it also helps them to serve the Lord by widening their knowledge of the people and places around them. Get involved by asking your child/ren to teach you some of the words and phrases that they are learning. Thank you for all your support so far! God bless you and have a Fenomenal break! 8 Year 11 & 12 School Holiday Workshops The following School Holiday Workshops are valuable sessions offered by teachers for Year 11 and 12 students to have an intensive time over several hours to consolidate learning, do practice exams or allow one on one catch up time with students. Students are recommended to attend when possible. Students are asked to arrive at the time scheduled and ensure that they leave the grounds at the conclusion of their session. Students attending will need to have submitted their permission forms or bring them on the day. Year 12 students are recommended to use these holidays not only to relax and recoup but also to catch up and refine their work. This is so that they are able to strive to achieve the best possible outcomes in their SACE results. Thank you to the Senior Years teachers who generously give up their time in order to run these workshops for our students.
