6 RECREATION UPDATE Residents Council Did you know that we have a Residents Council which meets nine times a year? All residents of Fairmount Home are members of the Council and are welcome to attend. Fairmount Home is pleased to be a new member with the Ontario Association of Residents Councils. Under law in Ontario, specific rights are given to Councils in facilities regulated by the province, and the Administrator is required to advise all residents, on a regular basis, of their right to form a Council. In other types of Homes, for example, retirement homes, a Residents Council is not required by law, but hundreds of them do have Councils, since residents, staff and administration see the benefit they bring to the Home and its residents. The Residents Council of a Home provides a vehicle through which residents maintain a degree of control over their lives, provide input into the management of the Home, and thereby contribute to the welfare of all involved, including staff and administration. Not all Residents Councils are the same; residents choose the kind that best suits them, and their Home. A few key points about the goals of our council include helping residents communicate with one another and with staff and administration, in a strong and positive way; gathering news and information related to the Home of interest to all; encouraging all residents to have a voice in their daily lives, and to express their concerns as residents of the Home; providing a forum where everyone can be heard, and the common will expressed. All residents are encouraged to attend the next meeting on Monday, May 25 th at 2 pm in the 2 South Activity Room. If you have any questions about the Council please call extension 571. Although family members may observe the meetings, they are not considered a member. If you have a concern as a family member, we encourage you to speak directly with a member of the Homes management. In addition, a Residents Council and Food Committee meeting is held to discuss meal planning and to offer feedback to the dietary department. These meetings typically follow the Residents Council meeting and are managed by the Manager of Food Services. Thank you to everyone for your feedback related to the updated activity calendar and the survey about the distribution methods. To date we have received about 15 responses. Most have stated they would prefer an electronic copy or to not receive a paper copy in their bill. Those wishing to receive a paper copy will continue to do so. Spring is in full swing! As you have likely seen, our greenhouse is full of seedlings! Please join us for our annual plant sale on Thursday May 14 th in the lobby. We will have vegetables and flowers available to help you in your planting. As always the money raised will be returned to the horticulture program. Please remember our gardens are for everyone to enjoy! We have been blessed with beautiful spaces, but they are not tame. While enjoying the space feel free to pick the weeds and turn the soil! While we do our best to maintain the robust garden space we are not professional gardeners and only have limited time to offer for maintenance; our volunteer gardeners are amazing and appreciated. Their time is also needed in their personal gardens, and they are volunteering the time they can. So again, please pick the weeds and turn the soil if you can spare a few minutes.

7 We hope you can join us for one of our Mother s Day events! If you want to purchase something for mom, you may wish to consider a hanging basket. We can add your moms name to the container and everyone can enjoy it! Our weekly gardening group is happy to maintain it through the growing season. EASTER PARTY April 2 The Easter Bunny hopped in with a basket of Easter eggs for the residents. He was accompanied on his route by volunteer Paul and his flute (photo at right).

8 More photos of the Easter Party Musical entertainment at the Easter party was provided by Picket Fences.

10 FAMILY COUNCIL Family Councils strive to provide a safe forum for families to share experiences, receive information and mutual support, discuss and seek solutions to common concerns and establish meaningful lines of communication between families and staff. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for our residents. If any family members or persons of importance to residents are interested in forming a Family Council, or would like more information about what is involved, please contact our Director of Care at extension 510. MEN S GROUP April 7 On Tuesday April 7 th we hosted a Men s Group that was organized and facilitated by Katie Parry our placement student from St Lawrence College. Katie planned a number of activities for our resident men including watching a classic hockey game, painting shelves and birdhouses, competing in minnow races, examining old tools and even getting their photos taken with a bear skin! The men also enjoyed Tim Horton s donuts and coffee. A big thank you goes to Katie for all her hard work while she was here on placement and for planning such a fun event for our resident fellas! Bird houses ready to be painted.
