1 Southern Vales Christian College From the Principal What a wonderful end to Term 2 we have had. There have been so many good things happening at SVCC. Last week we had the brilliant Career & Subject Expo and this week we had the great privilege watching our Year 11 and 12 Drama students deliver their 2015 production, The Phantom Father. What a wonderful evenings entertainment it very funny and extremely well acted. Thank you to Mr Peter Kalfas for producing and directing the production. The term ended with a wonderful day of House competitions at both campuses. There were various activities including an Aerodynamic Challenge, a Construction Challenge, Spelling Bee, Theatre Sports, Sports Competitions, SVCC Masterchef and the Great SVCC Bible quiz game show. The students had an fantastic day of fun, skill building and team work. Thank you to Mr Mark Healey for organising the day. We pray you and your families have a blessed break and we will see you for Term 3 on Wednesday 22 July. Mrs Jenny Nelson Principal Please note that Term 3 commences on Wednesday 22 July. Both Monday 20 July and Tuesday 21 July are Pupil Free Days. Teachers and staff are attending the CSA Conference and a UbD Professional Development Day. OSHC is available on Monday 20 July and Tuesday 21 July with a fun Vacation Care program. Career & Subject Expo SVCC prides itself in providing quality opportunities for its students. Our annual Career & Subject Expo is one example of how we do that. This year the expo took place on Thursday 25 June and provided students with the chance to speak to representatives from every university in Adelaide. They had the privilege of engaging and enquiring with Torrens University which is Adelaide s newest university. We were also blessed with the presence of Heritage College from Queensland with the offer of two student scholarships. The expo had a great representation from training organisations, including representatives from TAFE along with Careers Australia with whom we have a newly formed training agreement. Careers Australia will deliver a Diploma in Business at the College starting next term. Once completed, this diploma will allow students second year entrance for some courses at university. This provides a great entry point for our students into university and would also aid those students seeking to do a double degree. We were delighted to see so many parents and family members at the expo supporting their children through the maze of deciding a future learning or employment pathway. We look forward to continuing to improve the event and will make significant changes in the future to maximise time and engagement. Thank you to the presenters and teachers for the effort, time and care that they placed in their displays and providing caring advice for students. Mr Hugh Serfontein, Head of Secondary, Morphett Vale Issue 10 Week 10 Term 2

2 The Phantom Father Drama Production IMPORTANT DATES: TERM 3 25/7-26/7, Victoria Park 3/8 Japanese Students Arrive 17/8 Japanese Students Leave 21/8 Book Week Dress Up Day Morphett Vale Campus 28/8 Book Week Dress Up Day Aldinga Campus 15/9 Regional Chess Tournament 19/9-20/9, Murray Bridge Term 3 Week 1, July Mon 20 Pupil Free Day CSA Conference Tue 21 Pupil Free Day On Monday 29 June, the Year 11 and 12 Drama students performed in front of a very receptive and appreciative audience as part of their major moderated performance piece. An incredibly physical, raucous and boisterous style of theatre, The Phantom Father was based on the traditional Commedia Dell Arte Italian style comedy where performers would don masks with exaggerated comic features to draw additional attention to themselves, thereby complementing their physical and acrobatic skills. The students performed brilliantly, often undertaking signature stunts and gags, using very distinct walks, vocal tricks and other physical gestures. Jonah was wonderfully stingy and cagey as Pantalone, the money-loving hypochondriac and miserly Venetian merchant who, against his daughter Isabella s wishes (played with a delightful innocence and charm by Leah) is attempting to marry her off to a rich, toothless old man, Anselmo. Pantalone s mischievous servant Arlecchino (masterfully and brilliantly played by Samuel) comes to her rescue. He teams up with Lelio, Isabella s avid admirer and desperate suitor, in order to thwart Pantalone s plan. Lelio, (a wonderful and hilarious comic turn by Kyle) together with his false bravado and luscious hair, fights for his beloved Isabella, determined to woo her. However, first he has to get past a hawkish notary, Master Hookbeak, and a lunatic Dottore (both characters played with much aplomb and sinister humour by Jesse) before true love can prevail. Congratulations must go to the Year 11 and 12 students who improvised many of the set comic pieces and worked extremely hard to bring to life this very funny comedy. Trey, Eliza, Ryder & Harry Obedient & Cooperative - Charlie Respectful - Annalise Polite - Brianna Morphett Vale Week 8 Positive - Aiden Hardworking - Jasmine, Sarah, Lucy, Chelsea & Candice Obedient & Cooperative - Justice Recently, at both campuses, a Top Secret inflatable classroom was set up and our Primary students became Junior Secret Agents to their great delight! Their mission was to work through a Spy Training Manual chosen by their teacher that was fitting to their year level and curriculum needs. Throughout their mission, the students were ably instructed and assisted by Charlie, the Secret Agent dog, owned and operated by Richard, the facilitator. Regional Chess Tournament Topics included bullying, friendships, emotions, communication, medicine and drug safety, cyber safety, decision making and healthy food choices. Because of the novelty of the spy theme, inflatable classroom and the choice of topics, the students were thoroughly engaged and found the lessons memorable and relevant. Mrs Robyn Jellings Head of Primary Aldinga On Tuesday 23 June, the College hosted a Southern Districts Interschool Chess competition. This included selected SVCC students and schools from the local area. Ivan (Year 9) placed first in the Secondary competition, and Kane (Year 10) placed third in the secondary competition. Pasquale (Year 4) tied for fourth in the primary competition. Parents and teachers alike enjoyed spectating and encouraging our students. Once again, we were commended as a highly hospitable school. We look forward to many similar events in the future. Thank you to the teachers and staff who helped make the event such a success. 4 Student Leaders & New Staff Invited to Dinner PRIMARY HAPPENINGS Dressage Competition Success Congratulations to Kiara (Year 4, Aldinga). Kiara recently competed in a dressage competition at the Southern Vales Dressage Club with her new pony, Perry. She won the preliminary competition with a score of 62.25% which is quite an achievement as she was competing in the Under 18s and she is only 9 years of age. Year 1 Healthy Lunch Day Morphett Vale Campus The College Board hosts an annual dinner to welcome new staff to the College and meet with the College Captains. This year the event was held in the Trade Training Centre, Aldinga Campus with the Certificate I Kitchen Operations (Hospitality) students preparing and serving a lovely meal. The board members and their spouses were blessed by this opportunity to meet with, and pray for, our new teachers and the students in leadership positions. Thank you to Jamie Trezise, Virginia Dolphin and the Certificate I students for their hard work it was a great evening! We also thank SVCC parent, James Cogdell-Baird, who spent the day coaching the front-of-house students in table service and barista coffee making. These students only began the course this year. The training ensured that each aspect of the event was done to a very high standard. Mr Brett Manuel, Operations Manager As a part of the UbD Unit of Inquiry Plants are Essential for Life, the Year 1s at Morphett Vale investigated plant uses. They discovered that plants are used for food, which fits perfectly into the Health unit. They are picutred here making cold rolls and fruit salad for a delicious healthy lunch. 5 SA Art Gallery Excursion, Year 9 Aldinga On Monday 15 June, the Year 9 Art students from Aldinga visited the SA Art Gallery on North Terrace. They were able to look through the new exhibition Treasure Ships: Art in the Age of Spices which looks at how international trade in spices and other exotic commodities inspired dialogue between Asian and European artists. Exhibition highlights include Christian artwork SACSA Secondary Netball Carnival created at ports such as Goa and Nagasaki and two works from the personal collection of Queen Adelaide after whom the city of Adelaide is named. The students then took part in a class in the Gallery studio where they created bontanical artworks inspired by the exhibition. This is a preliminary 3 hour intensive and we anticipate running a weekly social skills program throughout the school term. Coordinated and led by Dr Kate Papandrea (Clinical Psychologist) and Karen Pearson (Speech Pathologist). The 3 Hour Intensive is NDIS approved for $ This program is aimed at supporting children in: Developing friendships Joining in with peers Problem solving in a positive way Winning and losing graciously Reading social cues when engaging with others Empathy for others Mrs Donna Smith and I had the privilege of attending the SACSA Netball Carnival on Tuesday 23 June. The students were outstanding and their behaviour was exemplary! The teams achieved higher results than ever before. The mixed SVCC Open team drew with Investigator College and beat Temple Christian College (Mile End Campus) 8-1. They lost their other games but all by less than 3 points. They were focused and gave it their all. A big congratulations to our Open players. The Year 8/9 SVCC Aldinga team were also amazing. They won 4 of their 6 matches and the two matches they lost were only by 3 and 1 points! They came extremely close to receiving a finals trophy and can be proud of their efforts! 7 Senior Years Science Update CAREER CORNER Dental Assisting Traineeships SA Dental Service is offering a number of Dental Assisting Traineeships at various SA Dental Service Dental Clinics across South Australia to commence in February Applications will be open 3/7/15 31/7/15 on the SA Health Careers website, enter the job number On Monday 11 May the Year 11 and 12 Physics students visited the new Tonsley campus of Flinders University to participate in a Physics for Mechanical Engineers workshop. Manipulating a trolley on a ramp with a motion sensor, they used software to calculate velocity and acceleration. We have similar equipment in our Science lab, so most of the students quickly learned how to operate the machinery. They then did a practical investigation using a force sensor to detect changes in a pulled elastic band. The laboratory itself was impressive, with a large apparatus used to test shear forces on different materials and high-resolution microscopes to examine the effects. Early in Term 2, the Year 12 Chemistry students entered the Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) titration competition. They worked carefully to ascertain the exact amount of sodium hydroxide required to neutralise a known amount of oxalic acid. Their calculations were submitted to the organisation, and we await the results. The Year 12 Chemistry students have also been studying the topic of energy changes. They did a practical experiment to find out the energy density of different fuels, by burning them in calorimetry. They minimised errors by ensuring that most of the heat from the burning fuel was transferred to 100ml of water in a can. The temperature difference and the mass of fuel burned was used in an equation to find the energy evolved when one mole of the fuel combusts. The Year 10s are enjoying finding out more about chemical reactions and how to balance chemical equations. The photographs show the oxidation of magnesium metal as well as a precipitation reaction between lead nitrate and potassium iodide. The insoluble, bright yellow lead iodide formed was impressive! Students had fun while learning important chemical concepts. They also used molecular models to help visualise what is happening to the atoms in the chemical reaction. Mrs Laura Tew, Science Teacher If you have completed Year 11, are interested in the health field and enjoy working with the public, SA Dental Service would like to hear from you. The Dental Assisting traineeship incorporates the Certificate III in Dental Assisting and is a 12 month program which will include on the job training and attendance at TAFE SA. For further information, contact Nadine Brennan, Dental Assistant, SA Dental Service on or sadsattraction&retention@ health.sa.gov.au Adelaide University Writing Competition Submit one or two pieces of work, fiction or non fiction with maximum of 1500 words each. Entries close 5 pm, Friday 24 July The winner will be announced at the Open Day - Sunday 16. First prize is a Kindle Touch and second prize is a $100 Dymock s voucher. The winner and runner up will also take part in creative writing workshop.
