2 Save the Dates... The QPS Grade 5/6 Musical, Alice in OZ, will be held on Wednesday, May 6th at 7:00pm at Sharon PS in the Gym. Hope to see everyone there! Basket Raffle draw will take place during the evening. QPS Students and Staff are excited to have a week of dance instruction with a professional dancer. The focus is on being healthy, having a growthmindset and being resilient. Songs and routines will have a growth-mindset theme. There will be a performance in the QPS Gym on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 3rd at 2:00pm. Please join us if you can. Privacy Reminder with social media brings many considerations for privacy. It is greatly appreciated that families remember that any photos or video taken during performances should be for personal viewing only and not shared or posted via social media. Thank you for respecting the privacy of all of our students, staff and families. We are very proud at QPS to share that, on May 21st, Mrs. Combaluzier will receive an award for Teacher of the Year from the Council For Exceptional Children in York Region at the Yes I Can awards ceremony. Thank you Mrs. C. for all you do to promote inclusion and to celebrate the strengths of all QPS students! You re the Chef At QPS We are thrilled to partner with York Region Community and Health Services to offer our grade 5 and 6 students a program called You re the Chef (YTC). This is a hands on cooking program designed to help develop skills and confidence necessary for our students to prepare healthy and tasty recipes emphasizing vegetables and fruit. Students will learn basic cooking skills and how to: -prepare recipes featured in YTC sessions -practice safe food-handling -include more Vegetables and Fruit in their diet Registration is open to grade 5 and 6 students to attend 3 (75 min.) cooking sessions after school on May 13, 20 and 27. 3 STUDENT PLACEMENT FOR SEPTEMBER 2015 A primary goal at QPS is to develop balanced classes where possible. A balanced class reflects the diversity of the community and allows the variety of interests and talents of our learners to emerge and develop. The classroom provides a variety of opportunities for a range of learners to succeed through appropriate challenges. In the right environment, students develop a sense of belonging and the feeling that they can make a noticeable contribution, in a variety of ways. The family, the school and the community all provide opportunities for children to socialize and develop the social and communication skills necessary for success. Each new year brings wonderful opportunities to meet new friends and expand our circle of acquaintances. School becomes more comfortable and familiar and accordingly, the potential of our students has a greater possibility of realization. These are the criteria we use to guide our placements: Balanced Ability, Interests and Talents All children are unique and different. The teacher s ability to provide meaningful learning is enhanced when classes are created to accommodate instructional groupings. Balanced According to Gender We attempt to balance the number of boys and girls in each class to ensure many friendship opportunities. Learning Style We consider how each learner goes about the process of learning and what kind of environment will best allow that style to be utilized effectively. Teaching Style We consider how a teacher goes about the teaching/ learning process and what type of learners might best flourish with each teacher. Social Blending This should not be viewed as grouping friends together, but as grouping students in a way that promotes effective and efficient learning. At particular stages, some close friends learn best in separate classes. Parent Input We welcome any information that parents can provide us concerning class placements, but we do not accept requests for specific teachers. Any information that you feel would be important for us to consider must be submitted in writing by May 22nd. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Why Does Attendance Matter? Getting to school every day and on time is very important. Learning occurs daily, right from the start of class. By establishing patterns early on (i.e. being punctual and responsible) children acquire positive habits about school attendance. Getting to class on time and avoiding absences are critical if your child is to get the most out of school. Entry time at QPS is 8:45 a.m.

4 Grade 3 and Grade 6 EQAO (Provincial Assessment) Grade 3 and 6 students will be writing the provincial EQAO assessment from May 25th to June 4th They will write the assessment in the morning over the course of three or four days. Please ensure that your child is on time for school and ready to participate. Children who arrive late miss important instructions and may disturb other students. Two days will be set aside to provide time for any students who may miss the assessment due to illness. We encourage the children to bring in water bottles to ensure that they are well hydrated. Student Busing Eligibility Did you know that students busing eligibility changes throughout their school career? Your son/daughter s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the Board s Transportation Policy #680: All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation. To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit For more information about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter s eligibility please visit Arrival to School and End of Day Dismissal Safety for Our Students Leslie Street is a busy road at any time of the day, but especially first thing in the morning and at the end of the day. For the safety of all our students, when dropping off your children in the morning, please wait with them until the crossing guard has given the all clear signal to indicate that it is safe for them to cross Leslie Street. Staff supervising the bus area will direct students to the school yard gate where staff supervision begins at 8:35 a.m. At end of day dismissal, all students will wait behind the school gate with the staff supervisor until their bus arrives or a parent is present for pick-up. Please meet your child near the dismissal gate and cross Leslie Street with your child when the crossing guard has given the all clear signal to indicate that it is safe to cross. We appreciate that parents leave the dismissal area promptly, once your child has been picked up, as it is an area of high congestion and the road is close by and very busy. We remind everyone that the school day ends at 3:20 p.m. If you are delayed, please contact the school as soon as possible. 5 School Lunch Assistants Needed for School Year Queensville PS is looking to hire School Lunch Assistants for next school year ( ). The role of a School Lunch Assistant is to provide lunch hour supervision. Interested candidates would need to make a daily, one hour commitment during the school lunch hour (12:40-1:40 pm) in addition to submitting a completed Vulnerable Sector Screening package (completed through York Region Police) prior to commencing employment.
