2 SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISION Introduction This booklet was created to inform parishioners of the many ministries and activities offered in our Parish, and to invite all who would like to become more involved in the Our Lady of Humility Parish Community to come and join our family of faith. It is our mission to follow the way of the Lord by extending welcome, embracing in healing love and sharing the good news of the Gospel. We hope you feel at home at Our Lady of Humility. Mass Schedule Weekday Masses and Service: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday..8AM Mass Friday (during the School Year School Mass) 8:45AM Mass Friday (during the Summer Months).8AM Mass Wednesday Communion Service.8AM Weekend Masses: Saturday.5PM Mass Sunday. 7AM, 9AM, and 11AM Mass Holy Day Masses.7AM, 9AM, and 7PM Mass Sacrament of Reconciliation..Saturday: 3:30 to 4:30PM Lectors: The Lector proclaims the Word of God through reading the Scripture at Mass. Liturgy Of The Word For Children: Children ages four through seven are dismissed to hear the Sunday readings that mirror the Liturgy of the Word in Mass on a child s level. Ministers Of Care: Ministers of Care ministry visits and brings the Eucharist to the homebound, those in hospitals, and nursing homes. Music Ministries: We have several very active choirs incorporating various styles of music for worship. The ministry welcomes singers as well as instrumentalists. Joyful Hearts Choir-Sat 5PM Mass. Practices Wednesday nights. Early Risers Choir with Organist 7AM Mass. Folk Group Choir-9AM Mass. Practices prior to Mass. Chorus of Faith Choir-11AM Mass. Practices Thursday nights. Quinceanera Classes: The family must call the Rectory three months prior to setting a date. Young ladies must be registered Parishioners and attend classes once a month for nine months. Rite Of Christian Initiation For Adults (RCIA): RCIA is a journey for those who would like to learn more about the Catholic Faith, to discover what it means to be part of a Parish. On their journey of faith candidates are prepared for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Sacristans: Care of the Sanctuary is the responsibility of the Sacristans including care of altar linens and related tasks. Ushers: Ushers are called to welcome and assist in seating or meeting the special needs of people, facilitate the presentation of the bread and wine, and take up the collection. 1 10
3 SPIRITUAL LIFE COMMISION Ministries promoting and fostering the growth of Spirituality in our Parish community. Altar Servers: Altar Servers assist the Priest and the worshipping community in the celebration of the Eucharist. Servers are boys and girls from the 5th Grade and up. Adult Altar Servers assist with funerals. Art And Environment: This ministry prepares the worship space for Mass and other liturgies. They decorate the Church for the different Church seasons. Baptisms/Baptismal Preparation Class: Baptisms are always held on the 1st Sunday of the month after the 11AM Mass at 12:15PM in the Church. The parents must also attend a Baptismal Preparation Class which is held on the 2nd Sunday of every month after the 11AM Mass. Contact the Rectory to make arrangements for the Baptismal Class and Baptism. Bereavement Committee: Members of this ministry assist the Priest by meeting with the families and helping them select the Scripture Readings and music for the funeral. Bible Study: Bible Study sessions are offered throughout the year for all interested in spiritual and educational growth. Communion Services: Communion Services are held Wednesday morning at 8AM. Eucharistic Adoration: Each week an opportunity for Eucharistic Adoration is offered on Thursdays from 2PM until 6PM in the Church. Eucharistic Ministers: Ministers assist the Priest in the distribution of the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass. Ministers must be at least 18 years of age. Greeters: Greeters welcome visitors, newcomers, and regular parishioners with warmth, openness, and hospitality to God s house. 4 The many Ministries at Our Lady of Humility are organized under four Commissions. Education Commission Adult Small Faith Groups/Study Groups Booster Club Family School Association (FSA) Our Lady Of Humility School Religious Education (RE) Religious Education Board School Board Human Concerns Commission Food Pantry Funeral Luncheons Helping Hands Of Our Lady Military Support Group Respect Life Sharing Parish St. Martin De Porres High School Soup Kitchen PARISH LIFE COMMISSION Knights Of Columbus: The Knights of Columbus is a Catholic fraternal organization dedicated to furthering and defending the Catholic Church in the United States by defending life, families, and the poor. Membership in the Knights is open to all practicing Catholic men. Scouting: Scouting is open to all young boys and girls in our Parish. Scouting encourages service to the community, and growth in leadership skills. Women s Club: This ministry participates in a variety of activities which include: social, spiritual, service projects, and fundraisers. Young Adult Ministry: Young adults ages meet to learn about our faith through spiritual and educational growth. This ministry organizes the Archdiocesan program, Theology on Tap each July. 5 PARISH LIFE COMMISSION Ministries encouraging family life programs and activities. 40 s, 50 s, & Better: This ministry provides organized activities of interest to this age group. Some favorites include: miniature golf, museums and caroling. Adult Sports Teams (Golf, Bowling, Softball): Our Lady of Humility has Adult Sports Teams that raise money to help support the School. Christ First Youth Ministry: High School teens gather regularly for activities, discussions, social events, leadership evenings and much more. All Parish Teens are invited to be part of all activities and events. We also participate on the Deanery (Lake County Teens) and Archdiocesan Level (CYO) for some events. Christ First follows a peer leadership model. Christ First provides an opportunity to gather together and have some fun with a purpose. Chaperones are always needed! Co-Ed Seniors: Parish Seniors meet monthly for a luncheon including a speaker or an event. All Seniors are Welcome. Donut Sunday (Hospitality Ministry): Donut Sunday is a Parish favorite, hosted by the Our Lady of Humility Chapter of The Knights of Columbus. It is held on the third Sunday of each month in the Parish Center. Family Life (Family Matters): This ministry strives to make our Parish more sensitive to the complex reality of family, and, ultimately, toward placing families at the center of the Church s life and mission. They do weekly articles for our Parish Bulletin. They also have activities for families during the year. 6 EDUCATION COMMISSION Ministries responsible for the religious education for all members of the Parish. Adult Small Faith Groups/Study Groups: These interactive groups meet to discuss particular aspects of our Catholic faith. Adult Faith Formation (RCIA): (Please see Spiritual Life) Booster Club: School parents whose children participate in the Athletic Program are in charge of fundraising and special events. Family School Association (FSA): School parents support the needs of the school both spiritually and financially through fundraising and social events. Our Lady Of Humility School: Our Parish School provides an enriching education in all areas of the curriculum, preschool through eighth grade, most especially in the area of Religious Education. The spirit of the Catholic faith is the atmosphere provided for an education of the total person. Religious Education (RE): Children from preschool through eighth grade have a variety of Religious Education/Formation Programs designed to share knowledge of our faith in a welcoming environment of a Catholic community. Religious Education Board: The Board directs efforts toward quality religious education and formation of the children from preschool through eighth grade. School Board: The Board acts as an advisory group to the principal. HUMAN CONCERNS COMMISSION Ministries serving the needs of others in the Parish and community. Food Pantry: The Food Pantry serves as an emergency food source, and as a referral service for other assistance requests. The person/family must live in Beach Park, Zion, or Winthrop Harbor. Funeral Luncheons: Volunteers extend a caring embrace to the families by offering a home-cooked luncheon following the funeral. Helping Hands Of Our Lady: This group assists persons in need with utility and rent expenses, medications, clothing, etc. The Helping Hands of Our Lady receives cash donations, as well as donations of clothing, furniture, and other goods, and distributes them. Each case is reviewed by a board of parishioners who ultimately decide to the availability and extent of any assistance provided. Military Support Group: This group arranges care packages for those serving overseas and supports the families here at home. Respect Life: Interested parishioners work toward the protection of the right to life of all, especially the unborn. Assistance is provided to those in need of pregnancy counsel. A Rosary is said following the 8 AM Mass on the first Saturday of each month. Sharing Parish St. Martin De Porres High School: In an effort to be mutually supportive of parish communities whose income level is low due to poverty or other causes, the Archdiocese initiated a Sharing Parish Program. Our Sharing Parish is presently St. Martin De Porres High School in Waukegan, a Catholic High School of lower income families and multi-cultural people. Our Sharing Parish gifts support the mission and needs of this Catholic educational institution. Soup Kitchen: Parish volunteers prepare and serve food to the needy at St. Bartholomew s Church every fourth Thursday of the month. 5 6
