1 Southern Vales Christian College MindMatters Launch On Friday 16 October the College held the official launch of the MindMatters framework. To celebrate this event, Secondary students from both Aldinga and Morphett Vale campuses combined for a special assembly which was followed by an afternoon of fun celebrations. NEWS FLASH 3 SVCC students competing in National APEX Fashion Awards on Saturday The formal proceedings commenced with on official welcome from our Principal, Jenny Nelson, followed by a speech from the Honourable Robert Brokenshire of the Family First Party. Robert spoke about the importance of resilience and what he believed were the positives about youth in this day and age. A statement from Amanda Rishworth MP of the Labor Party was then read out. The students were told about how MindMatters is currently being implemented within the College. To finish the assembly, the KidsMatter and MindMatters Action Team was presented to the attendees. To mark the official commencement of MindMatters in the College, a LED light display presented a countdown with the crowd all joining in for a memorable beginning. From here, the celebrations included Mikaylah Field, an SVCC old scholar, singing and playing her guitar. A whole range of activities followed which included an inflatable soccer pitch, sticky fly wall, mini golf, sumo suits, giant snakes and ladders, earth ball, stilts, geeta 4-person planks, face painting, tug of war, quoits, lawn bowls, computer games, badminton, music and BBQ. A special thank you to all those who assisted with preparations for and during the launch. It was great to see so many students and families involved in the festivities. Mr Mark Healey MindMatters & KidsMatter Committee From the Principal Welcome to Term 4. We have so many exciting Teaching and Learning opportunities planned for this term. PRIMARY AWARDS Aldinga Term 3, Week 10 No awards distributed due to end of term early finish Term 4, Week 1 Positive - Alliyah, Poppy, Joshua, Jett, Sophie, Harry and Ryder Hardworking - Jacob, Jude, Beckham and Mollie Respectful - Hope and Jake Certificates of Merit Ysabella and Mathew Morphett Vale Term 3, Week 10 No awards distributed due to end of term early finish Term 4, Week 1 No awards distributed due to Mind Matters Launch event What an incredible effort from all the students who participated in the Compassion Water Walk-a-Thon! The students determination to walk as many laps as they could in one hour led to the most remarkable results. At 300m a lap, many of the students managed 20 laps, which calculates to 6kms! Even the little Foundation students didn't stop or give up. Our littlest student walked 13 laps! I am so very proud of you all. As you walked you carried the Compassion bottle of water, but you also carried the families you are doing it for in your hearts. Thank you to all of the families for supporting the event so well and sponsoring the children. We raised a staggering amount of money and prizes are all ready to hand out at assemblies. God bless our big hearted community. In India many people do not have access to clean drinking water. Waterborne diseases are prevalent, yet preventable. Many children walk hours each day to get fresh water for their family. For every $75 we raised, a Compassion child and their family in India will be provided with a water filtration system that produces 55 million litres of safe water more than enough for a lifetime. Jacqui Chilman Head of Primary, Morphett Vale WITHDRAWAL FROM SVCC Families who are intending to withdraw their children from Southern Vales Christian College at the end of this year are reminded that written notification of their intention to withdraw their child/children must be received by the College by Friday 6 November, thus giving the required 12 weeks notice prior to the start of the next school year. If you are considering withdrawing your child/ren but have not yet made a final decision I would recommend that you let us know in writing that there is a possibility your child could be leaving and then confirm your final decision once it has been made. This enables you to have met the College s requirement of giving sufficient notice, but still allows you to continue their enrolment if your plans change. Taking place on Friday 18 September, the aim was to raise money for a water purification system as part of Compassion s Water For Life initiative. The students each carried a bottle of Compassion water as a reminder of how important it is to have clean water. It was wonderful to see all the students involved in the walk and very touching to see the older students helping and supporting the younger ones. We were also encouraged by quite a number of parents who came to enjoy the sausage sizzle at lunchtime and to cheer the children on as they walked or ran the course. Congratulations to all students who raised money for this very worthwhile cause and to the families and friends who supported them. 5 College Captains Visit Government House The College Captains Lizzie, Luke, Jonathan and I had the privilege and honour to attend the Governor of South Australia s Student Leader Representative Reception at Government House. Even with high expectations, we were all astounded at the architectural beauty of the interior of Government House, which we discovered is the oldest government building in Australia. We had the honour of personally meeting the Governor and his wife, and also had the opportunity to mingle with other student leaders. The Governor presented a short address encouraging us all through sharing his own journey, which surprisingly included being a refugee, and he shared his personal advice on leadership and the importance of determination through hard times. The advice that stood out to me was when he spoke about taking on leadership even when you don t feel like a leader, and taking each opportunity to use our individual gifts and talents to serve others. He emphasised that whether we can see it or not, everything we do and say has an influence on others and it s up to us to shape the kind of influence we have. Overall, the event was a very rewarding experience and has made us all excited about what our future holds, and what doors God will open for us to serve in both our local and wider community! God bless, Lauren Daniell, Year 12 College Captain QUICK NOTES Items Needed for the Creative Arts & Design Extravaganza The annual Creative Arts & Design Extravaganza is on Wednesday 18 November, Week 6, Term 4. 6 Picture Book Launch, Year 11 English YEAR 4 BYOD INFO EVENING Parents and guardians of students who will be in Year 4 in 2016 are invited to attend a BYOD ipad Program Information Evening. This is a repeat of the Term 2 Information Evenings for those who were unable to attend. Aldinga: Mon 2 November Trade Training Centre, 7 pm Morphett Vale: Wed 4 November Resource Centre, 7 pm QUICK NOTES On Tuesday 13 October, the Year 11 English students at Morphett Vale shared the picture books that they created with Mrs Brown s Year 1 class. Their task was to create an original picture book aimed at six to seven year olds. It focused on engaging young readers with an entertaining written and visual story. Students used at least one language Interschool Chess Tournament technique in their book, such as rhyme, alliteration, similes, repetition, etc. The picture books will be featured at the Creative Arts & Design Extravaganza on Wednesday 18 November. Make sure you check them out! Miss Laura Sklaptis English Teacher Proverbs 31 Club The Proverbs 31 lunch time club meets on Mondays at Morphett Vale and is open to all Secondary girls. Our goal is to consider the word of God and how we can exemplify it in our daily lives as young women. Students spent two lunch times making up colourful bags to be packed into shoeboxes as part of the Operation Christmas Child project, which our College participates in every year at this time. On Tuesday 15 September the College hosted the Southern District Interschool Chess Tournament. This is our fourth time hosting this year and it is a privilege to be a part of such an excellent event. There are many educational benefits of playing chess, and at our College we are keen to provide this for our students. Students from Aldinga and Morphett Vale Primary and Secondary received two intense training sessions from the South Australian Director of Chess SA, Mr Mato Jellic. On the day of the tournament, twelve schools joined us to compete. Our Secondary team won the event for the day. Well done to the Primary team for a good effort. If you are interested in your child competing in 2016, please ensure they attend Chess Club next year. Jacqui Chilman Head of Primary, Morphett Vale Proverbs 31:19 And her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor. SVCC Olive Oil Southern Vales Christian College produced olive oil is available from both Front Offices. It is $10 for the 500ml bottle and $3.50 for 100ml. 8 Exursion to Warriparinga, Year 3 COMMUNITY NEWS Noarlunga Districts Junior Soccer Association Cup Finals Noarlunga and Districts Junior Soccer Association Cup Finals took place on Saturday 17 October. Several of our Aldinga campus students played in teams who were in the finals. On Friday 11 September the Year 3 classes visited Warriparinga, the Living Kaurna Cultural Centre, at Bedford Park. The students learnt about Indigenous artwork, the signs, symbols and the meanings of Aboriginal paintings. They had fun walking around the scar tree and sitting in a polti circle where they were told about the history of the scar tree. During this inquiry, we have learnt to respect the history that has been passed down through Aboriginal Australians and the many ways in which their knowledge of the land can be useful today. After the excursion we discussed what we learnt. Here is what the students had to say: The Aboriginal people ate bush food like berries and seeds. Aboriginals are clever to know which food is poisonous. They watched when flowers bloomed. Some only bloomed if it was going to be a very hot summer (they are blooming now)! They rubbed stones, bones and sticks on rocks to make arrows. Some Aboriginal people made dot paintings. Some Aboriginal people have light skin. Miss Rebecca Drozdoff, Year 3 Teacher Joel (Year 7) played for the Willunga U13s team which won, 4-2. Brandon (Year 10), Nathaniel (Year 10), Matt (Year 11) CJ (Year 11) and Brodie (Year 11) played for the Willunga U17s, and although they lost 2-1, it was a strongly contested game. Well done to all those involved. Aldinga Bay Community Carols Calling all singers - Aldinga Bay Community Carols choir needs you! Have you always wanted to be part of a choir? 9 PEDAL PRIX 2015 I had no idea how big this event is! This was stated by so many first time visitors to Pedal Prix. On the third weekend in September, Murray Bridge is overtaken by the thousands of visitors, participants, crews and families of the more than 200 human powered vehicles involved Teams are from Primary and Secondary schools through to university and adults from across South Australia and interstate. It s huge! 2015 was SVCC s twentieth year in Pedal Prix. Initially it was an event where teams built their own vehicles and raced them at Adelaide International Raceway. SVCC now consistently enters two teams of secondary students in purpose-built cars that are much faster and safer. For many families it is an annual pilgrimage either for a day, or to camp with the teams for the weekend. A huge mess tent is set up for meals and refreshment, and another large tent for the teams pit areas where rider preparations and vehicle maintenance occurs. Parent volunteers and staff are rostered (including the wee-small hours of the morning) in the pits and marshalling points track-side. You know you re part of something that s making a difference in students lives when you see their faces light up when their families turn up to cheer them on. Riders train for months in advance with Saturday bike rides and a 6 hour race at Victoria Park, to familiarise riders with race conditions. Mr Chris Russell and Mr David Thomson work to prepare and upgrade the cars and manage the event. We have great support from three of our board members who help with setup, run the camp-kitchen and are there to welcome you. Parents really make the event whether for a visit or staying over or helping. Community spirit is alive and well at Pedal Prix. And sponsors how blessed are we? We had Total Tools and Zippy Cleaning & Maintenance as our major sponsors for Thirteen other companies also generously provided goods or funds that made the event possible. Their logos and contact details are listed in this edition please patronise them if you re shopping for goods or services that they offer.

10 PEDAL PRIX Senior Team 13th in Div Jnr Secondary Team 8th in Div. 2 So, how did our teams go this year? Just great! The junior secondary team in the car called 'Resurrected', was ridden by 11 students and came eighth out of 63 in Division 2. 'Son of Stinger' the senior secondary car, with 10 riders making up the team, placed 11th in Division 3 where there were 53 cars. That means our teams placed 47th and 51st out of the 225 cars that raced. The junior team also gained eight places from last year and the seniors moved up two places from 13th. Junior team riders: Noah Courtney, Jonathan Errey, Jordan Hunting, Rey Lara, Jordan Manuel, Joshua Maxwell-Davis, Luke Menadue, Max Menadue, Rowan Milne, Joshua Underwood and Jack Wagenknecht. Senior team riders: Jack Alderman, Jacob Bloem, Jonathan Camac, Joshua Courtney, Reynier Lara, Aaron Lowe, Amaya Milne, Stephen O'Reilly, Elijah Webb, Brandon Penny-Phillips. Students learn persistence and commitment through the preparation process of training and then focus, determination and endurance in the races. Leadership, sportsmanship and team camaraderie are all developed at these events. Maybe it s summarised best by the students: This is the most fun, I will definitely be doing it next year It s tiring, but so much fun for me to ride with friends. It s exciting and exhilarating watching the super-fast riders. Great to see support from the pits as you ride by. When I get in the car I know I ve got to push my hardest. The constant thought of crashing feeds my adrenalin. It really surprised me how many people are there. Riders, we hope that you are proud of your efforts because we certainly are proud of you! Mr Chris Russell, Mr David Thomson and Mr Brett Manuel
