Overview f the Schl Nurse Certificate Prgram The dynamic, expanding and cmprehensive nature f the practice f schl nursing demands an educatinal and skill level that enables nurses t meet the cmplex health needs f students. As the specialty f schl nursing evlves, the requirement fr a baccalaureate degree r pst-baccalaureate certificate has becme increasingly imprtant. The Schl Nurse prgram is designed as a minr fr registered nurses enrlled in the RN t BS/MS in Nursing at Rutgers, The State University f New Jersey, Cllege f Nursing and as a pst-baccalaureate certificate prgram fr registered nurses with a baccalaureate degree seeking schl nurse certificatin. The prgram is designed t prepare registered nurses t meet the health needs f children enrlled in pre-kindergarten thrugh high schl in the state f New Jersey. The Schl Nurse minr/certificate is designed t prvide registered nurses with the apprpriate educatinal backgrund, experiences and cmpetencies t carry ut the respnsibilities and functins f the schl nurse. 4 Practicum Guidelines It is the respnsibility f the student t secure clinical sites and preceptrs fr the practicum curses. This prcess shuld begin prir t the start f the practicum curse. Students shuld: 1. The student shuld cnsider fr a practicum based upn yur area f interest r need. 2. All required frms fr the practicum can be fund n the Cllege f Nursing website by lgging int the Cllege f Nursing website with yur NetID and clicking n Student Matters. 3. Cmplete the Clinical Site Infrmatin, Preceptr Appintment Agreement and Preceptr Data Frm and submit t the Administrative Assistant, Ms. Mia Williamsn via miaw@rutgers.edu r fax t If the preceptr has wrked with ther Rutgers students befre there is n needed t cmplete the Preceptr Data Frm unless their infrmatin has changed. Please check with Ms. Mia Williamsn ( ) r miaw@rutgers.edu t assure the Preceptr Data Frm is n file if yur preceptr indicates they already filled ut the frms. The Preceptr Appintment Agreement is required t be cmpleted fr every practicum. 5. Cntracts/Letters f Agreement are generated frm the Office f Student Affairs nce yur paperwrk is cmpleted. Be advised that cntracts may take up t ne mnth r mre befre they are in place. Therefre it is imperative that yu submit all paperwrk in a timely fashin. 6. 5 Schl Nurse Clinical Hur Guidelines: 150 hurs in a schl setting under the direct supervisin f a certified schl nurse The 150 hurs maybe cmpleted in ne semester r tw semesters If yu are currently emplyed as a nn-certified pr prvisinal schl nurses and want t cmplete the 150 hurs at yur schl yu must fllw the guidelines belw: The preceptr must be a certified schl nurse with the student s schl district The student must be supervised by the certified schl nurse fr the required 150 hurs In additin t the 150 hurs students are required t attend cnferences with the faculty (ne and half hurs a week) POLICIES RELATED TO CLINICAL EXPERIENCES Student Attendance at Scheduled Clinical Days If a student is t be absent fr a scheduled clinical day, due t illness r emergency, the faculty/preceptr shuld be ntified prir t the beginning f the clinical day. On the first clinical day, students shuld identify the prcedure fr cntacting the faculty/preceptr in case f absence. It is the student s respnsibility t negtiate with the faculty/preceptr regarding making up time, when pssible. Students are expected t schedule clinical time with the preceptr cnsistent with the preceptr s availability/schedule. Revised 6/10 Page 5

6 Prfessinal Dress and Behavir Students are expected t dress apprpriately and behave in a prfessinal manner at all times. Schl identificatin badges shuld be wrn that includes the student s name and the name f the university, The name pin measures 3" x 1" and is red with a white verlay. The engraving thrugh the white verlay results in red lettering. There are 3 lines f lettering: 1st line is students first and last name; 2nd line is Rutgers, The State University; 3rd line is Cllege f Nursing. Name pins can be purchased thrugh Irene s Unifrm Shp in Livingstn NJ 97r thrugh any stre that creates name tags. The clinical site may, hwever, specify the dress cde. If labratry cats are required, the Cllege f Nursing insignia shuld be rdered frm Irene s Unifrm Shp. The Required Number f Clinical Hurs Required fr each Clinical Practicum This infrmatin is prvided in the curse descriptin. Arrangements fr the times and days fr clinical hurs shuld be validated by the faculty/preceptr and indicated in the student - preceptr agreement r cntract. When meeting with the preceptr, the student shuld discuss with curse faculty hw clinical time will be scheduled, e.g. ne day per week, blcks f time. In general, clinical hurs may cnsist f experiences/activities assigned by r negtiated with the faculty member. Unless therwise apprved by faculty, clinical time is expected t extend ver the entire semester. Clinical Placements Clinical placements fr students are arranged cllabratively with the student, the faculty member respnsible fr the curse, and the preceptr, if needed. The terms f the placement are frmalized in a letter f agreement r cntract filed with the agency and in the Office f Student Affairs. Specific requirements fr each clinical curse in the prgram may be fund in the curse syllabus. 7 Prfessinal Liability Prtectin All students are required t have prfessinal liability insurance befre they begin clinical wrk. Students are required t have their name as the plicy hlder. The blanket plicy that many emplyers carry is nt acceptable. CPR Certificatin Certificatin fr cardipulmnary resuscitatin (CPR) at the health care prvider level is required prir t beginning the clinical experience. Thereafter, yearly certificatin is required. A letter frm the instructr indicating a pass r a current CPR card is valid prf f status. Only CPR certificatin frm the American Heart Assciatin will be accepted. Criminal Histry Backgrund Check Clinical agencies mandate criminal histry backgrund checks fr all individuals engaged in patient care. Urine Drug Screening Requirement As a result f the new Jint Cmmissin n Accreditatin f Healthcare Organizatins requirement, all clinical students are required t have a negative Panel 10 urine drug screens n file prir t beginning clinical curse wrk fr the Refusal t cmply will prevent students frm attending clinical and may prevent students frm cmpleting the curse/prgram. The drug screening is t be cnducted thrugh If yu already cmpleted yur backgrund check, yu can rder yur drug screening separately. If yu have nt cmpleted yur backgrund check yu can rder bth the criminal backgrund check and urine drug screen at the Revised 6/10 Page 7

8 same time. We will ONLY ACCEPT drug screenings perfrmed with Adam Safeguard. Previus drug screening results at yur place f emplyment is nt acceptable. Health Requirements All students enrlled in degree-granting prgrams must prvide dcuments t prve that they have had all immunizatins that are required by state law. The required immunizatin frms are included with the student s letter f admissin. Students wh d nt submit dcumentatin f immunizatins befre enrlling r during the first term f enrllment may nt register fr the fllwing term. Any student seeking an exemptin frm this requirement fr medical r religius reasns must request in writing that the requirement may be waived. In additin t the university s health requirements, the Cllege f Nursing health plicy requires the fllwing: 1. Cmplete physical examinatin, health histry, and labratry tests; 2. Tuberculin screening yearly if the persn tests negatively. Fr thse wh test psitively by Mantux test, a chest x-ray is required upn admissin; 3. Evidence f immunity t Hepatitis B; 4. Tetanus/diphtheria bster received within the past 10 years; 5. Dcumentatin f immunity t varicella, measles, mumps, and rubella. HIPAA Cmpliance All students must cmplete the HIPAA Cmpliance mdule and bring prf f cmpletin t the practicum faculty. Academic Dishnesty Academic dishnesty is nt tlerated at Rutgers. The university has a plicy n academic integrity which the Cllege f Nursing fllws. This plicy can be fund at If yu suspect a student f being dishnest, please cntact the faculty member immediately. Advisement The Office f Student Affairs at the Cllege f Nursing crdinates general academic advising by faculty members. Each student is assigned a faculty adviser wh guides and advises students as the student prgresses thrugh the curriculum. The Cmprehensive Schl Health prgram including health services, health educatin and a healthy schl envirnment will be described. Emphasis is placed n the prmtin f health and wellness in the schl age child as well as prviding nursing services t children with acute and chrnic health prblems and thse with special needs. Students will be placed fr 150 hurs under the supervisin f a Certified Schl Nurse and a Teacher f Health Supervisr. The student will participate in the rles and activities f the schl nurse and participate in planning and implementing health educatin classes with experienced teachers. Pst Baccalaureate Prgram Requirements (18-33 S.H.) The NJ Department f Educatin requires a minimum f 30 credits fr a schl nurse /instructinal certificate. The transfer f credits frm previus curses f study, that satisfy cntent requirements, may reduce the ttal credits that students must cmplete. Students enrlled in the pst-baccalaureate certificate prgram may take either undergraduate f master s level fundatin curses.
