5 5 DIVISION OF COUNSELING AND FAMILY THERAPY OVERVIEW Divisin f Cunseling and Family Therapy Missin Statement The missin f the Divisin f Cunseling and Family Therapy (DCFT) is t invlve students in a search fr truth, values and a just existence within the framewrk f humanistic, depth and pst-mdern psychlgical traditins. The visin f the DCFT invlves a cmmitment t the tw deepest rts f the Regis Missin, t educate cunseling prfessinals wh are grunded in the awareness and cultivatin f their intrinsic values and the understanding f hw t mbilize thse values in the service f cmmunity. Cultivating truth, values and a just existence in the field f cunseling requires a hlistic and humanistic perspective that recgnizes the lived interplay f thught, feeling and actin, as well as the deeper influences f sul and spirit, in the creatin and transfrmatin f human meaning and the relatinships in which this meaning is enacted. Master f Arts Degree in Cunseling Overview Our highly interactive, n-campus Masters f Arts Cunseling degree is designed t help yu develp a strng fundatin f current theretical knwledge and practical cunseling psychlgy skills that prepare yu t wrk with diverse ppulatins in mental health cunseling settings. The Regis Cunseling faculty is cmmitted t creating pen and supprtive educatin envirnments that reflect the scial, relatinal and crss-cultural cntexts f learning that are essential fr effective cunselr training. Regis University s Master f Arts in Cunseling (MAC) prgram is a 60-credit-hur degree that meets the academic requirements fr Clrad Licensed Prfessinal Cunselrs (LPC) set frth by the Clrad Licensed Prfessinal Cunselr Examiners Bard. The MAC degree is accredited by the Cuncil fr Accreditatin f Cunseling & Related Educatinal Prgrams (CACREP) and the Cuncil fr Higher Educatin Accreditatin (CHEA). Als apprved by the Internatinal Registry f Cunselr Educatin Prgrams (IRCEP), CACREP s internatinal affiliate, the degree curriculum prvides hands-n training thrugh ne semester (6- credit hurs) f Practicum in the department s state-f-the-art cunseling labratry, fllwed by tw semesters f supervised cunseling internship in an apprved cmmunity agency setting. The Masters in Cunseling prgram (MAC) is ffered at Regis University's Nrth Denver (Lwell), Brmfield and Clrad Springs campuses. Sme cursewrk is peridically ffered at the Denver Lwell campus based upn student and faculty needs. The plicies, prcedures and degree requirements fr the MAC prgram are the same fr students regardless f whether they take cursewrk at the Clrad Springs and the Denver campuses. Mst students cmplete the prgram in three years, taking an average f tw t three curses a semester, but have up t 6 (six) years t cmplete prgram requirements. As a graduate cunseling student at Regis, yu will be a part f a challenging, supprtive, learning cmmunity that prmtes a sense f respnsibility and willingness t advcate fr human justice and scial change in the wrld. 8 8 The MA Cunseling Prgram prvides clinical mental health training and supervisin t future Prfessinal Cunselrs. Learning experiences are infrmed by Jesuit educatinal values and traditins. Students engage in persnal reflectin and critical thinking while develping a discerning mind and heart, dedicated t the service f thers in need. Graduates are prepared t live as reflective, inquisitive, creative, and service riented leaders. They are ready t make a psitive impact with an emphasis n scial justice and advcacy in a changing sciety. Master f Arts in Cunseling Prgram Objectives: 1. Students will demnstrate knwledge in each f the CACREP eight cmmn cre curricular standard areas including: prfessinal rientatin and ethical practice; scial and cultural diversity; human grwth and develpment; career develpment; helping relatinships; grup wrk; assessment; and research and prgram evaluatin. (CACREP Clinical Mental Health Standards A,C,E,G, I, and K.) 2. Students will demnstrate the skills and practices necessary t address and adhere t ethical and legal standards within the clinical mental health cunseling preventin and interventin. (CACREP Clinical Mental Health Standard B.) 3. Students will demnstrate skills and practices f culturally sensitive clinical mental health services reflective f the diverse needs f client ppulatins and seek t prmte advcacy fr diverse ethnic/cultural/sciecnmic grups. (CACREP Clinical Mental Health Standards D, and F.) 4. Students will demnstrate skills and practices f case cnceptualizatin including develp f culturally sensitive assessment, diagnsis, and treatment planning fr diverse client ppulatins. (CACREP Clinical Mental Health Standards D and H) 5. Students will demnstrate skills and practices f assessment that prvide apprpriate research and evaluatin prcesses t deliver effective clinical mental health services fr diverse client ppulatins. 9 9 The Divisin f Cunseling and Family Therapy Diversity Statement Because cunselrs wrk with clients having diverse lifestyles, beliefs and values, the Divisin expses students t a wide range f scial, relatinal, and crss-cultural cntexts. The Cunseling faculty prvides pen and supprtive learning envirnments where students are invited t engage in persnal and reflective prcesses abut their wn and ther s experiences, beliefs and values. We seek t train cunselrs wh can apprach clients with integrity, respect and sensitivity fr differences in beliefs, values, and lifestyles. The American Cunseling Assciatin Cde f Ethics (2014) statements regarding diversity include the fllwing: Cunselrs are aware f-and avid impsing-their wn values, attitudes, beliefs, and behavirs. Cunselrs respect the diversity f clients, trainees, and research participants and seek training in the areas in which they are at risk f impsing their values nt clients, especially when the cunselr s values are incnsistent with the client s gals r are discriminatry in nature. 10 10 Degree Requirements Admissin Students may enrll in curses with the designatin MCPY when admitted t the Divisin f Cunseling and Family Therapy as either a Fully Admitted r Prvisinally admitted student. Full Admissin Fully admitted students are admitted t the prgram withut the need f additinal cursewrk r cnditins. Students are expected t register fr n mre than 9 graduate credits per 16 week time perid. Registering fr mre than 9 credits requires permissin frm yur advisr. All students must maintain a grade pint average f 3.0 r better and fllw the sequencing f curse prerequisites. Students are als subject t evaluatin by faculty n the Student Perfrmance Evaluatin. Students perfrming belw minimal criteria n the SPE will be referred t remediatin/supprt. A remediatin cmmittee will meet with the student and a remediatin/supprt plan will be written. The student must fulfill all requirements n the remediatin/supprt plan and may require apprval frm the remediatin/supprt cmmittee befre further prgressin in the prgram is permitted. Prvisinal Admissin Prvisinal admissin status is a perid f time where students must demnstrate readiness fr full admissin t the prgram. Prvisinal admissin des nt insure that students will be admitted r be permitted t cmplete the MAC degree. Prvisinally admitted students are required t successfully cmplete additinal criteria in rder t be fully admitted t the prgram. These cnditins include the fllwing: 1. Cmpletin f MCPY 505 Skills fr Helping Prfessinals with a final curse grade f B- r better 2. Acceptable ratings n the Student Perfrmance Evaluatin cnducted within MCPY 505 skills fr the Helping Prfessins. Students perfrming belw minimal criteria n the SPE will nt be admitted int the prgram. Special Student Admissin (nn-degree seeking students) Special Student status is assigned t students wh may be attending the prgram t cmplete up t 9 credits f cursewrk that wuld fulfill equivalency fr licensure status such as the Licensed Prfessinal Cunselr in the State f Clrad r similar clinical cunseling licensure status in ther states. Admissin is gained thrugh cntact with an admissins cunselr fr the Divisin f Cunseling and Family Therapy, and thrugh the apprval f the MAC Prgram Directr. The MAC Prgram Directr/Chair will review transcripts and syllabi in rder t assure equivalent cursewrk has been taken t meet prerequisites fr cursewrk being sught in the MAC prgram. Nn-degree students

11 11 may nt participate in MCPY 692/693 Practicum, and MCPY 698A/B MAC Internships. Hwever, under special student status, the student may elect t enrll in Pst-Graduate Certificate curses by cntacting the MAC Prgram Directr/Chair. MAC Academic Requirements The fllwing requirements must be satisfactrily cmpleted in rder t graduate: 1. Full and Prvisinal Student Orientatin attendance and requirements: Student Orientatin must be attended prir t enrllment in MCPY curses. Students admitted as prvisinal status must fulfill all cnditins utlined in the admissin letter t btain eligibility fr full admissin in the prgram. Full admissin t the MA Cunseling Prgram must by btained in rder t pursue degree requirements academic credit hurs must cmpleted accrding t curricular requirements: All cursewrk must be cmpleted with a 3.0 GPA r higher, i.e a grade f B- r better. All cursewrk must be cmpleted within the six year time frame in rder t cmplete the degree 3. Six Cre Fundatinal Curses must be taken and passed befre a student can register fr MCPY 635 Cunseling Techniques I: MCPY 602 Spirituality and Cunseling MCPY 605 Human Grwth and Develpment MCPY 610 Theries f Cunseling MCPY 620 Abnrmal Psychlgy MCPY 615 Cultural Issues and Scial Justice MCPY 625 Prfessinal Orientatin and Ethical Issues 4. The fllwing Clinical Skills Preparatin curses are required fllwing cmpletin f the six Cre Fundatinal Curses listed abve. MCPY 635 Techniques I MCPY 636 Techniques II MCPY 630 Grups: Prcess and Cunseling. May be taken after MCPY 635 Cunseling Techniques I and cncurrent with MCPY 636 Cunseling Techniques II. Enrllment in and Cmpletin f Practicum: The three Clinical Skills Preparatin curses MCPY 635, 630, and 636 must be cmpleted prir t enrllment in practicum Enrllment in MCPY 692/693 Practicum: Clinical Supervisin, must be apprved thrugh an applicatin submitted t the Clinical Crdinatr. (See MAC Practicum & Internship Clinical Manual) Prir t applying fr enrllment in Practicum, all students must receive acceptable ratings n the Student Perfrmance Evaluatins (SPE) in MCPY 635 Cunseling Techniques I, MCPY 636 Cunseling Techniques II, MCPY 630 Grups.

12 12 Students will fulfill cunseling duties at the Center fr Cunseling and Family Therapy n a Regis campus, as well as fulfill a Grup Cunseling Practicum cmpnent at an ffsite lcatin. (See MAC Clinical Manual). 7. Special Ppulatin Training Requirement: Requirement fr placement at specific Practicum & Internship sites where children and adlescents are the primary ppulatin. One f the fllwing curses must be taken prir t r cncurrently with Practicum: MCPY Play in Family Therapy MCPY 678 Intrductin t Play Therapy MCPY Cunseling Children & Adlescents Nte It is highly recmmended that yu select the curse that crrespnds with the ppulatin seen at the specific site. MCPY 645, 650, 660, and/r 672 are highly recmmended prir t internship if wrking with ppulatins whse needs include significant assessment, career cunseling, substance abuse treatment, r crisis/trauma/lss treatment. 8. Enrllment in and cmpletin f MCPY 698 Internship MCPY 692/693 Practicum is a prerequisite fr enrllment MCPY 698A Internship and MCPY 698B Internship are taken in tw sequential semesters. Internship 698 C may be required r arranged if internship requirements are nt met within tw semesters. All Clinical Practicum and Internships curses must receive a Pass grade in rder fr the curse t cunt tward degree requirements. If a student receives a grade f Fail in a Practicum r Internship curse, nne f the supervised experience hurs within that semester will cunt tward degree requirements. Satisfactry student evaluatins. See III. Student Evaluatin Prcess in this handbk fr further infrmatin. Successful cmpletin f fieldwrk requirements: Practicum and Internships A & B (800 hurs) with a grade f Pass, including Triadic and Grup Supervisin. See the MAC Clinical Manual fr further details. 9. Elective Curse Requirement: One elective curse may be chsen frm any f the graduate certificate ptins. Prerequisites apply t all elective curses taken. 10. Cmpletin f the Cunselr Preparatin Cmprehensive Examinatin. The CPCE is taken any time between the semester with enrllment in MPCY 636 Techniques II and prir t the cmpletin f MCPY 698 Internship A. (See the MAC Clinical Manual fr further details). 11. Capstne Prject: Satisfactry cmpletin f the requirements fr a Capstne Prject, a written and ral clinical case study presentatin is cmpleted during the final semester f Clinical Internship (MCPY 698B r 698C). The Assessment f Student Learning Outcmes Assessment f each student s learning utcmes is cnducted develpmentally at key develpmental pints f prgressin thrugh the prgram. CACREP Prfessinal Identity Standards, Prfessinal Practice Standards and Clinical Mental Health Standards are embedded int student learning utcmes within curses and curricular experiences thrugh three distinct phases f the prgram fr all students. Prfessinal Identity Standards and assciated learning utcmes are measured during the first year f cursewrk fr students. The CACREP Prfessinal Identity Standards are immersed in the curricular experiences defined primarily as cre curses and techniques curses. Prfessinal Identity Standards and assciated learning utcmes are measured within each f these curses as each student is graded n his/her perfrmance n curse benchmark assignments. The benchmark assignments within each curse are designed by faculty t assess key learning bjectives in the prgram.

14 14 Students in the MAC prgram are als required t take the CPCE exam during their Cunseling Practicum semester. This exam prvides them with summative feedback n their acquisitin f knwledge within the CACREP Prfessinal Identity Standards f the curriculum. Each student receives a persnal letter frm the MAC Chair prviding them with their scres in each learning area with cmparisns t natinal means. Students are encuraged t use this infrmatin as a guide in preparing t take the NCE during their internship semester, which is the state licensure exam. Frmative feedback t students is given during the prgram when needed thrugh the use f the Student Perfrmance Evaluatin, This frm is used when students are assessed by faculty t need remediatin r supprt t be successful in the prgram. Frmative feedback is als prvided by faculty thrugh the Student Cunseling Skills Evaluatin which is cmpleted n all students as they take MCPY 635 Cunseling Techniques I and MCPY Cunseling Techniques II curses. Prfessinal Practice Standards and the assciated learning utcmes in this area fr each student are evaluated during the Cunseling Practicum experience. During Practicum, students are given frmative feedback frm faculty supervisrs frm live supervisin cmments taped n student videtaped client sessins in the cunseling lab. Triadic and grup supervisin is als prvided weekly as part f the Practicum experience. Summative and frmative feedback is given at midterm and at the end f the Practicum experience using the Student Practicum Skills Evaluatin frm. This frm is linked directly t the student learning utcmes in the CACREP area f Prfessinal Practice. Students must receive a minimum f satisfactry ratings n the Student Practicum Skills Evaluatin in rder t prgress int the Internship phase f the prgram. Clinical Mental Health Cunseling Standards and assciated learning utcmes are measured in specific degree curses and thrugh each student s perfrmance in Cunseling Internship. MCPY 620 Abnrmal Psychlgy; MCPY 660 Substance Abuse Cunseling; MCPY 672 Crisis, Trauma, and Lss; and MCPU 698 A Cunseling Internship and MCPY 698 B Cunseling Internship make up the curses that address the primary learning utcmes with the clinical mental health standards. Benchmark assignments fr each f these curses are rated by faculty using SLO rubrics fr the curse. In additin t the benchmark assignments fr the afrementined curses in this area, the student s perfrmance in the internship phase f the prgram (MCPY 698 A and B) are matched t the Clinical Mental Health Standards and measured by faculty and site clinical supervisrs. Site supervisrs and faculty supervisrs use the Student Cunseling Skills Evaluatin t rate the student n the learning utcmes assciated with the CACREP CMHC Standards. The final exit exam fr students ccurs during the secnd semester f internship, when each student must cmplete and pass the Clinical Capstne Presentatin and Paper as part f the curse requirements. The final Capstne Paper and Presentatin is rated by faculty evaluatrs the Capstne Prject Faculty Evaluatr Frm which is a rubric based frm linked t the assciated with CACREP Clinical Mental Health Standards and the MAC Prgram Learning Outcmes. Divisin f Cunseling & Family Therapy Plicies Transfer Credits Curses may be transferred frm anther reginally accredited institutin with an equivalent cunseling prgram. Curses may be transferred with up t 12 credits as lng as the syllabus fr each curse transferred matches the equivalent syllabus in the MAC curriculum and the bjectives set frth in the CACREP standards. They must be graduate level curses f a passing grade (B- r better) and cmpleted n less than 6 years prir t the transfer in rder t cunt tward the MAC degree requirement. Incmpletes are granted at the discretin f the instructr. T request a grade f incmplete, the student must submit a written request fr the incmplete t the curse instructr, explaining the unfreseen circumstances that have ccurred. Other requirements: 1. The request must be submitted prir t, r by, the last meeting date f the curse. If the request is nt submitted by the last meeting date f the curse, the student will be graded n whatever assignments and perfrmance requirements (including attendance) have been cmpleted. In cases where a student is incapacitated and unable t meet this deadline, if written evidence is presented regarding the circumstances, the instructr will wrk with the student regarding this deadline. 2. The student must have cmpleted 75% f the curse with a passing grade in rder t be eligible fr an incmplete. If the student has nt cmpleted 75% f the curse, the student will be advised t withdraw frm the curse. Withdraw dates vary! The length f time and the remaining requirements t cmplete the curse are determined by the instructr; hwever, the maximum length f time fr cmpletin is the end f the fllwing semester. 4. If the curse wrk is nt cmpleted by the end f the fllwing term**, the incmplete grade reverts t an F ( I/F ) and is calculated in the GPA. Grade Appeals Appeals f grades earned in the Rueckert-Hartman Cllege fr Health Prfessins (RHCHP) must be initiated within fur weeks after the fficial term end date in which a curse is taken. When a student wishes t prtest a grade received in a curse, they must use the fllwing prcedure: 1. The student cntacts the instructr f the curse and reviews the issue. If the grade remains in dispute, the student shuld fllw step The student submits a written request fr review f the grade t the Prgram Chair. The dcument must prvide ratinale indicating why the grade earned is nt apprpriate, and all relevant dcumentatin must be included (curse syllabus, cpies f exams, quizzes, papers, presentatin materials, etc.) The dcument will include the student s name, address, address, curse number, instructr name and the term in which the curse was cmpleted. The instructr f the curse will als prvide dcumentatin t the Chair. Nte: If the instructr is the Prgram Chair, then appeals will be made t the Assistant Dean. 3. If the grade dispute is nt satisfactrily reslved, the student r the instructr may appeal the decisin t the Assciate Dean. This written appeal must be submitted within tw (2) calendar weeks f receipt f the decisin in step 2 abve. 4. The Assciate Dean will review the prceedings and any additinal infrmatin prvided by the student. The decisin f the Assciate Dean is final. Academic Prbatin Students must have a minimum cumulative grade pint average f t graduate. If a student s grade pint average falls belw in the prgram, the student is placed n academic prbatin. Students placed n academic prbatin have ne semester t raise their grade pint average t a If the student believes they have exceptinal reasn t request an extensin t the ne semester rule, then they must seek apprval thrugh their Faculty Advisr and the Degree Chair. Academic Suspensin Students wh fail t raise the cumulative grade pint average t are suspended. In additin, students wh receive a grade f C r belw in tw curses are subject t academic review and may be suspended frm the prgram. Suspensin can be appealed t the Assciate Dean. Students wh are ntified f academic suspensin fr the previus term and wh are currently in attendance in a Regis University class may cmplete that class. Any additinal registratins will be drpped.

18 18 Leave f Absence and Withdrawal frm the Prgram Accrding t the plicy f Regis University, students have up t (6) years t cmplete their degree frm the time they start their prgram. Learning in the Cunseling and Family Therapy degree prgrams by nature require sequencing f cursewrk, which can be disrupted by lng perids f absence. Students wh may need a leave f absence fr lnger than ne semester need t cmplete a Leave f Absence frm and submit t their faculty advisr. Students wh wuld like t request Withdrawal frm the prgram need t cmplete the Leave f Absence frm indicating their intentin t permanently leave the prgram. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Ethics and Cnfidentiality An integral cmpnent f Cunseling and Family Therapy Divisin curses is student and instructr selfdisclsure and the use f persnal experiences fr the purpse f facilitating cursewrk and learning. Each student is expected t hnr cnfidentiality as it pertains t student self-disclsure. N shared infrmatin, cmments, r pinins expressed by ther students r instructr in the educatinal setting shuld ever be used in a manner which may result in humiliatin, embarrassment, harassment, damage, r ther injury t the student in his/her persnal, public r business life. In additin, cnfidentiality must be upheld by nt disclsing any infrmatin that wuld identify a particular individual r rganizatin. An additinal integral cmpnent f higher educatin is challenging ne s wn perceptins and beliefs regarding the curse cntent and integrating infrmatin as well as understanding ppsing perceptins and beliefs. Thus, students have the right t chse hw much he/she will disclse and must als accept the respnsibility f respecting disclsure f ther students and instructrs. Nte n practice curses in which students create DVD s f practice cunseling sessins A number f ur curses require yu t tape yur practice cunseling sessins and create a DVD, which yu ften submit t yur instructr as part f an assignment. The same rules f cnfidentiality apply t the use and handling f practice-sessin DVD s as stated in the paragraphs abve. All DVD s must be submitted t yur instructr by the end f the term, and they will be destryed. If yu d nt submit all DVD s t yur instructr by the end f the term, yu will nt receive a grade fr the curse. Academic Hnr Cde Students and faculty f RHCHP are cmmitted t the highest standards f academic integrity and assume full persnal and prfessinal respnsibility fr maintaining thse standards. All members f the RHCHP cmmunity exhibit the qualities f hnesty, lyalty and trustwrthiness in all academic activities, hlding themselves and each ther accuntable fr the integrity f the learning cmmunity. All faculty have access t plagiarism detectin sftware, which can be used with r withut the student s knwledge in any RHCHP curse. Sanctins fr plagiarism may include: A failing grade n an assignment, Failure f the curse Referral fr remediatin and supprt Expulsin f the student frm the University Prcedures fr plagiarism: An instructr wh suspects that a student has cmmitted plagiarism shall cntact and discuss the matter, in persn, with the student. The instructr shall als cnsult with the Prgram Chair as sn as practical nce they have develped the suspicin f plagiarism. Prir t cnsultatin, hwever, the instructr may take actin t prve, detect, r preserve evidence f plagiarism. In taking such actin the instructr shuld minimize disruptin and embarrassment t the student(s). The instructr and Prgram Chair shall review the evidence. If the evidence warrants a claim f plagiarism, the student shall be infrmed f the charge and given an pprtunity t state his/her case. The student shall be infrmed f the pssible penalties that may be impsed r recmmended. The instructr, with the apprval f the Prgram Chair, shall infrm the student in persn, r by a persnal telephne call, and by certified mail (t the lcal address as cntained in the University recrds) f the dispsitin f the matter. With the help f the prgram chair, the evidence will be submitted t the Academic Integrity representative. The student may be referred fr remediatin/supprt.
