11 Get Started The fllwing tpics give yu all the infrmatin yu need t set up yur phne and Sprint service the first time. Yur Phne at a Glance The fllwing illustratin utlines yur phne s primary features. Set Up Yur Phne Prir t using the phne, it is necessary t install and charge the battery. An ptinal micrsd memry card (nt included) can als be installed at this time. Remve the Back Cver Using the slt prvided, gently lift the cver ff the phne. Get Started 1

12 Install an Optinal Memry Card T insert an ptinal micrsd card (nt included), carefully slide an ptinal memry card under the tp metal plate int the micrsd card scket until the card lcks int place. Fr mre infrmatin, see Memry Card. Install the Battery Insert the battery, aligning the gld cntacts n the battery with the gld cntacts n the phne, and gently press the battery int place. 13 Replace the Back Cver Replace the battery cmpartment cver, making sure all the tabs are secure and there are n gaps arund the cver. Charge the Battery Yur phne is pwered by a rechargeable, standard Li-In battery. A Wall/USB Charger (Charging Head and USB cable) is included with the phne fr charging the battery. Yu will need t charge the battery befre using yur phne. Warning! Use nly apprved accessries t charge yur phne. Apprved accessries are designed t maximize battery life. Using ther accessries may invalidate yur warranty and may cause damage. 1. Plug the USB cable int the charger/accessry jack n the bttm f the phne. 2. Plug the USB cable int the charging head, and then plug the charging head int an electrical utlet. Get Started 3

14 3. When charging is finished, remve the USB cable frm the charger/accessry jack n the phne. Turn the Phne On Use the Pwer/Lck Key t turn the phne n. Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key t turn the phne n. If yur phne is activated, it will turn n, search fr Sprint service, and begin the setup applicatin. If yur phne is nt yet activated, see Activate Yur Phne fr mre infrmatin. Get Started 4

15 Activate Yur Phne Depending n yur accunt r hw and where yu purchased yur phne, it may be ready t use r yu may need t activate it n yur Sprint accunt. If yu purchased yur phne at a Sprint Stre, it is prbably activated and ready t use. If yu received yur phne in the mail and it is fr a new Sprint accunt r a new line f service, it is designed t activate autmatically. When yu turn the phne n fr the first time, yu shuld see a Hands Free Activatin screen, which may be fllwed by a PRL Update screen and a Firmware Update screen. Fllw the n-screen instructins t cntinue. If yu received yur phne in the mail and yu are activating a new phne fr an existing number n yur accunt (yu re swapping phnes), yu can activate n yur cmputer nline r directly n yur phne. Activate n yur cmputer: G t sprint.cm/activate and cmplete the nline instructins t activate yur phne. Activate n yur phne: Turn n yur new phne. (Make sure the ld ne is turned ff.) Yur phne will autmatically attempt Hands-Free Activatin. Fllw the n-screen prmpts t cmplete the activatin prcess. T cnfirm activatin, make a phne call. If yur phne is still nt activated, visit sprint.cm/supprt fr assistance. If yu d nt have access t the internet, call Sprint Custmer Service at frm anther phne. Tip: D nt press the Pwer/Lck Key while the phne is being activated. Pressing the Pwer/Lck Key cancels the activatin prcess. Nte: If yu are having any difficulty with activatin, visit sprint.cm/supprt. Cmplete the Setup After yu turn n yur phne and activate it, yur phne displays a Welcme screen. Fllw the prmpts t set up features and preferences n yur phne. Nte: In sme cases, yu may be able t cmplete the setup prcess befre yur phne has been activated n yur Sprint accunt. During r after setup, yu may see a Cnnectins Optimizer ntice. Read the ntice and tuch I Agree t allw yur phne t cnnect autmatically t the best available data netwrk, including Wi- Fi. T turn Cnnectins Optimizer ff at any time, tuch > > Settings > Get Started 5

16 Cnnectins tab > Mre netwrks > Mbile netwrks > Cnnectins ptimizer and uncheck the bx. 1. At the Welcme screen, fllw the n-screen instructins t cnfigure yur phne s basic ptins, such as language, date and time, Wi-Fi cnnectins, lcatin settings, etc. Ggle Accunt: Many f yur phne s applicatins, such as Gmail, Ggle Maps, Hanguts, and the Ggle Play Stre, require a Ggle Accunt. T use these applicatins, yu must set up yur Ggle Accunt n yur phne. Cmplete the steps t sign in t yur current Ggle Accunt, r sign up fr a new Ggle Accunt. Samsung Accunt: Yur Samsung Accunt is used fr access t Samsung apps and services, such as Samsung Hub, Samsung Apps, Samsung Link, and much mre. Cmplete the steps t sign in t yur current Samsung Accunt, r sign up fr a new Samsung Accunt. 2. Tuch Finish t cmplete setup. Set Up Vic Yur phne autmatically transfers all unanswered calls t vic , even if yur phne is in use r turned ff. Yu shuld set up yur Sprint Vic and persnal greeting as sn as yur phne is activated. Always use a passwrd t prtect against unauthrized access. 1. Press Hme and tuch Phne. If yur screen is lcked, press the Pwer/Lck Key t turn n the display and then swipe yur screen in any directin. See Turn Yur Screen On and Off. 2. Tuch and hld t dial yur vic number. 3. Fllw the system prmpts t: Create yur passwrd. Recrd yur name annuncement. Recrd yur greeting. Imprtant: It is strngly recmmended that yu create a passwrd when setting up yur vic t prtect against unauthrized access. Withut a passwrd, anyne wh has access t yur phne is able t access yur vic messages. Fr mre infrmatin, see Vic . T ensure that n ne else has access t yur infrmatin, yu will need t create passwrds t prtect yur privacy. Accunt User Name and Passwrd If yu are the accunt wner, yu will create an accunt user name and passwrd when yu sign n t sprint.cm/mysprint. (Click Sign in/sign up and then click Sign up nw! t get started.) If yu are nt the accunt wner (if smene else receives the bill fr yur Sprint service), yu can get a sub-accunt passwrd at sprint.cm/mysprint. Sprint 411 Sprint 411 gives yu access t a variety f services and infrmatin, including residential, business, and gvernment listings; mvie listings r shw times; driving directins, restaurant reservatins, and majr lcal event infrmatin. Yu can get up t three pieces f infrmatin per call, and the peratr can autmatically cnnect yur call at n additinal charge. There is a per-call charge t use Sprint 411, and yu will be billed fr airtime. Press Hme and tuch Phne, and then tuch. Sprint Operatr Services Sprint Operatr Services prvides assistance when yu place cllect calls r when yu place calls billed t a lcal telephne calling card r third party. 19 Phne Basics Yur phne is packed with features that simplify yur life and expand yur ability t stay cnnected t the peple and infrmatin that are imprtant t yu. The fllwing tpics will intrduce the basic functins and features f yur phne. Yur Phne s Layut This illustratin utlines yur phne s basic layut. Key Functins The fllwing list defines the features listed in the abve illustratins. Frnt f Phne LED indicatr displays red when charging, green when fully charged, blue when pwering up, and range when a ntificatin has arrived. Earpiece lets yu hear the caller and autmated prmpts during calls. Prximity Sensr detects the presence f bjects near the phne, such as when using mtin settings. Fr example, while talking n the phne, the sensr detects when it s near yur ear and turns ff the screen t prevent accidental key presses. Light Sensr detects the ambient light level, such as when setting screen brightness when Autmatic brightness is enabled, and when using the Camera. Phne Basics 9

20 Frnt Camera allws yu t take pictures and vides f yurself. Pwer/Lck Key lets yu turn the phne n r ff, turn the screen n r ff, r lck the screen. Press and hld fr a Device ptins menu, where yu can turn the phne ff r restart it, r fr easy access t Airplane mde, and t Mute, Vibrate, and Sund mdes. Back Key lets yu return t the previus screen, r clse a dialg bx, ptins menu, the Ntificatins panel, r n-screen keybard. Hme Key returns yu t the Hme screen. Press and hld t pen the recently used applicatins windw, and access Task Manager and Ggle Search. Quickly press twice t launch the S Vice app. Menu Key allws yu t access a menu frm mst f yur phne s screens. Vlume Key adjusts the vlume f yur phne s sunds. Frm the Hme screen, press t adjust master vlume. During calls r playback, press t adjust vlume. Press t mute the ringtne f an incming call. Back f Phne Micrphnes allw ther callers t hear yu when yu are using the speakerphne, and captures sund during recrding. 3.5 mm Headset Jack allws yu t plug in either a stere headset r an ptinal headset fr cnvenient, hands-free cnversatins. Camera lets yu take pictures and recrd vides. Flash helps illuminate subjects in lw-light envirnments when the camera is fcusing and capturing a pht r vide. USB Charger/Accessry Prt allws yu t cnnect the phne charger/usb cable (included) and ther ptinal accessries (nt included). Speaker plays ringtnes and sunds. The speaker als lets yu hear the caller s vice in speakerphne mde. Cver Release allws yu t lift the cver frm the back f yur phne. Infrared Transmitter cntrls external devices such as TVs. CAUTION! Inserting an accessry int the incrrect jack may damage the phne. Turn Yur Phne On and Off Use the Pwer/Lck Key t turn the phne n r ff. Turn Yur Phne On Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key. Phne Basics 10

21 Turn Yur Phne Off 1. Press and hld the Pwer/Lck Key t pen the Device ptins menu. 2. Tuch Pwer ff t turn the phne ff. Yur screen remains blank while yur phne is ff (unless the battery is charging). Turn Yur Screen On and Off Yur phne allws yu t quickly turn the screen ff when nt in use and t turn it back n and unlck it when yu need it. Turn the Screen Off When Nt in Use T quickly turn the screen ff, press the Pwer/Lck Key. Pressing the Pwer/Lck Key again will turn n the screen and display the lck screen. T save battery pwer, the phne autmatically turns ff the screen (times ut) after a certain perid f time when yu leave it idle. Yu will still be able t receive messages and calls while the phne s screen is ff. Nte: Fr infrmatin n hw t adjust the time befre the screen turns ff, see Screen Timeut. Turn the Screen On and Unlck It 1. T turn the screen n, press the Pwer/Lck Key. 2. Swipe the screen in any directin t unlck the screen. 3. If yu have set up a screen lck, yu will be prmpted t draw the pattern r enter the passwrd r PIN. Fr mre infrmatin, see Lck Screen. Tuchscreen Navigatin Yur phne s tuchscreen lets yu cntrl actins thrugh a variety f tuch gestures Tuch When yu want t type using the n-screen keybard, select items n-screen such as applicatin and settings icns, r press n-screen buttns, simply tuch them with yur finger. 25 Flick Flicking the screen is similar t swiping, except that yu need t swipe yur finger in light, quick strkes. This finger gesture is always in a vertical directin, such as when flicking the cntacts r message list. Phne Basics 15

Rtate Fr mst screens, yu can autmatically change the screen rientatin frm prtrait t landscape by turning the phne sideways. Tip: Yu can als access the screen rtatin setting frm the Ntificatins screen. Pull dwn the Ntificatins bar and tuch Screen rtatin t enable the ptin. Yur Hme Screen The hme screen is the starting pint fr yur phne s applicatins, functins, and menus. Yu can custmize yur hme screen by adding applicatin icns, shrtcuts, flders, widgets, and mre. Yur hme screen extends beynd the initial screen. Swipe the screen left r right t display additinal screens. Nte: Yu can keep swiping in ne directin t mve thrugh all the hme screens, back t the hme screen. The small dts tward the bttm f the screen let yu knw yur current screen psitin. Phne Basics 18

(If the current hme screen desn t have rm, swipe the screen left r right t display an extended screen.) 2. On the Hme screen menu, tuch the type f item yu want t add and then select the item. Set wallpaper: Select a wallpaper fr the Hme screen, the Lck screen, r the Hme and lck screens. Apps and widgets: Add app shrtcuts t a hme screen, r add widgets such as a clck, calendar, mail, peple, scial netwrking apps, and mre. Flder: Add a flder where yu can rganize screen items. Add a shrtcut t all yur cntacts, cntacts with phne numbers, r starred cntacts. Cntact details are autmatically updated when there are changes in the surce. Page: Add a hme screen page. Make Phne Calls There are several cnvenient ways t place calls frm yur phne. Call Using the Keypad The mst traditinal way t place a call is by using the phne s dialer screen. 1. Press and tuch Phne > Keypad tab. 2. Tuch the number keys n the keypad t enter the phne number. As yu enter digits, Smart Dial searches fr cntacts that match. If yu see the number yu want t dial, tuch it t place the call immediately withut entering the rest f the number. 3. Tuch t call the number. 4. T end the call, tuch. Call frm Lgs All incming, utging, and missed calls are recrded n the Lgs tab. 1. Press and tuch Phne > Lgs. 2. Tuch an entry t display the call details. 3. Tuch t place a call. Always reprt yur lcatin t the peratr when placing an emergency call. Sme designated emergency call takers, knwn as Public Safety Answering Pints (PSAPs), may nt be equipped t receive GPS lcatin infrmatin frm yur phne. Receive Phne Calls The fllwing infrmatin lets yu knw hw t answer incming calls, mute the ringer n incming calls, reject incming calls, and mre. When yu receive a phne call frm a cntact, the Incming call screen appears and displays the caller ID icn, name, and phne number f the calling party. Get Started with Cntacts Cntacts can be synced with an accunt such as a Ggle Accunt r Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync, r stred lcally n yur phne. Ggle cntacts are synchrnized between yur phne and a Ggle Accunt yu set up n yur phne. Micrsft Exchange ActiveSync cntacts are synchrnized between yur phne and an Exchange Server r Micrsft Outlk accunt set up n yur phne. Device cntacts are stred lcally n the phne. The availability and range f the Wi-Fi signal depends n a number f factrs, including infrastructure and ther bjects thrugh which the signal passes. Turn Wi-Fi On and Cnnect t a Wi-Fi Netwrk By default, yur phne s Wi-Fi feature is turned ff. Turning Wi-Fi n makes yur phne able t discver and cnnect t cmpatible in-range Wi-Fi netwrks (r WAPs - wireless access pints). Turn Wi-Fi On 1. Press and tuch > Settings > Cnnectins tab > Wi-Fi. 2. Abut Cnnectins Optimizer The Cnnectins Optimizer helps yu manage and enhance yur data experience by finding and cnnecting t "remembered" Wi-Fi netwrks n yur phne. Remembered Wi-Fi netwrks are netwrks with which yu have previusly chsen t cnnect. Active Wi-Fi cnnectins may ffer imprved perfrmance and generally imprve battery life while allwing yu t talk n the phne and use data at the same time. Web and Data 86

If yu d nt leave yur Wi-Fi antenna n all the time, yu will nly ntice the Cnnectins Optimizer perating at certain times f the day in a small number f lcatins n the netwrk. Yur Wi-Fi antenna will cnserve battery by scanning fr cnnectins peridically (nt cntinuusly), and if n cnnectin is achieved, the antennas will be turned ff. Yu may als manually turn the antennas ff during the scan perid. T facilitate quality assurance and enable feature enhancements, infrmatin is cllected abut yur battery levels, Wi-Fi and netwrk cnnectins and usage. N persnal infrmatin is cllected. 1. 101 Camera and Vide Use yur phne s built-in camera and camcrder. Camera Yu can use the camera r camcrder t take and share pictures and vides. Taking pictures with yur phne s built-in camera is as simple as chsing a subject, pinting the camera, and then pressing the camera key. Press and tuch Apps > Camera.
