Discussin Bard Basics Instructrs can create frums fr the curse r fr Grups When yu enter the frum area, the frums that have been added will be listed n the screen Yu have the fllwing ptins frm the ptins menu fr each frum: Open: accesses the frum s yu can read and add threads Edit: allws yu t mdify the frum name, descriptin and settings Manage: allws yu t change the rle f the users in the frum Cpy: allws yu t cpy the frum (entire frum r settings nly) within the curse either fr the entire curse r in grups Delete: allws yu t remve the frum (this is permanent and cannt be undne) Grade: if the frum is a graded, the ptins menu will have a Grade link. It will take yu t a page listing all participants with a Grade buttn fr each individual. Nte: Graded Threads are managed differently. Unread Psts: any number ther than zer is a link that will cllect the unread psts nly and display them in preview frmat n a new page; this eliminates the need fr yu t sift thrugh all psts t find unread psts Page 1

2 Bb Discussin Bards 2. Accessing a Frum There are tw ways t access Discussins: Frm the menu: Each standard curse menu includes a link t Discussins. Using this link takes the user directly int the curse discussins area. Instructrs cannt access the Grup discussins in this area. Frm the Cntrl Panel: Instructrs can access Discussins frm the Cntrl Panel (Curse Tls Discussin Bard). This pint f access allws the instructr t access either curse discussins r grup discussins. Grup discussins can als be accessed within the Grups. 3. Create a Curse Frum Click Discussins frm the menu click Create Frum type Name type Descriptin chse Availability chse date and time restrictins (ptinal) chse Frum Optins: Nte that as yu chse ptins, ther ptins may be made unavailable, which is indicated with strikethrugh. Fr example, if yu chse t require students t pst befre they can see ther student psts, Grade Threads will nt be available: Viewing Threads/Replies: yu can chse Standard View r Participants must create a thread in rder t view ther threads in this frum. Grade (n grading, grade frum r grade threads) nte that Graded Threads disables students ability t add new threads; they can nly reply t the instructrs and students threads Recmmend nt shwing participants in needs grading since yu grade frm the Discussins area Due Date: autmatically adds the assignment t the curse calendar Assciated Rubrics: yu can assign a rubric that can be used t grade student wrk Alignments: this is in pilt currently, and nt applicable at this time Page 2

3 Bb Discussin Bards Subscribe t threads r frum (instructrs and students can subscribe; an is sent ntifying user that a new pst has been added t a frum r thread) Create and Edit: Allw annymus psts Allw authr t remve wn psts (all r nly thse with n replies) Allw authr t edit wn published psts Allw members t create new threads Allw file attachment Allw users t reply with qute (generates a reply t the selected pst with a cpy f that pst included in the bttm with the user s name; lks like an ) Frce mderatin f psts (frces instructr t apprve/publish all psts in the frum; has the ptin t return r reject the pst) Additinal Optins: Click Submit Allw pst tagging (nly instructrs can tag psts, but instructrs and students can view and srt tags) Allw member t rate psts (available t instructrs and students; 0 t 5 star system that averages all participants rating) 4. Access a Frum Click Discussin n the curse menu r n the link within the cntent area (i.e. Week 1) Click the name f the discussin frum yu wish t access Threads will be displayed in a list n the page 5. Create Thread Access a Discussin Frum click Create Thread enter Subject type Message click Submit. If attachments have been enabled, the user will have the ptin t add an attachment just belw the Message bx. Page 3

4 Bb Discussin Bards 6. Views (Tree View vs. List View) List View While in a discussin frum, the view defaults t List View, which displays ne thread at a time. Click the Next arrw t see the next thread. T see replies, click the thread name. The list f threads will be visible with a preview pane t read the cntents. Tree View The Tree View allws users t see all f the threads n the page, including initial threads and replies. Simply click Expand All in the tp right crner. Please nte that while in Tree View users cannt see any Tags created by the instructr. Page 4

5 Bb Discussin Bards 7. View Threads T see a cnversatin, click a thread. All f the threads will be displayed in the preview pane. The example belw shws the initial student thread (tp ne) and a reply frm anther student (bttm ne). 8. Reply t a Thread Click the thread t which yu wish t respnd and click Reply. Type yur message in the Message bx Yu have the ptin t Attach a File (if enabled) Click Submit. Ntice that when yu hver ver Reply, yu ll be prmpted with additinal ptins. Page 5

6 Bb Discussin Bards 9. Save Draft Users can save a pst as a draft. It is imprtant t nte that if Save Draft is used, n ne can see the thread in the list f replies except fr the wner f the pst. It will have (draft) at the end f the pst subject. T Mdify/submit a draft pst: Click the pst t pen it in the preview pane click Edit finish the thread click Submit 10. Cllect Psts Instructrs and students can Cllect psts fr easy review and srting. T cllect all threads: Access a discussin frum click Tree View click the checkbx at the tp f the list t select All threads t select specific threads, click Expand All and click the apprpriate checkbxes click Cllect all psts selected will be displayed n 1 page in preview mde Page 6

Srt Cllected Psts Once yu ve cllected psts, yu can srt them a cuple f ways: Srt by: Authr's last name Authr's first name Subject Date Thread rder Overall rating (if enabled) Chse ne f the srt criteria frm the Srt by drp-dwn bx in the actin bar. Order: Yu can chse t srt threads in Ascending r Descending rder Filter: Instructrs can filter the threads by authr, status and tags. Click Filter n the right side f the page t shw the tl chse filter criterin frm the lists click G When yu want t srt by anther authr, yu must first return t all click Filter chse Select All frm Authr chice list click G Nw yu can srt by anther authr Print Preview: Click this buttn t view a print preview f the cllected threads Page 7

Tag Threads Tags are wrds r phrases that nly instructrs r TAs can add t threads as a way t categrize r summarize the threads All users can see and srt n the tags Tags can nly be added t psts when they have been cllected They can be added tw ways: a) Tag Multiple Psts at Once: Select thread(s) by placing checkmark(s) next t it type a tag in bx Tag Text bx at the tp f the page click Add all psts checked will have this tag added b) Tag Individual Psts: Click Add buttn next t Tag at bttm f thread preview pane type a tag in bx that appears r click the Chse frm Existing link t chse a term already used click OK Delete Tags In the Cllected view, click red circle with white X next t the tag yu wish t delete click OK when asked t cnfirm deletin this can nly be dne ne-at-a-time Page 8

Reply with Qute Replies t psts shw nly the users reply Yu can nw include the riginal pst in yur reply by clicking the Qute buttn available in the preview pane f the pst It will resemble an and allw yu t make cmments next t authr s text 14. Rate a Pst Curse Tls Discussin Bard chse the curse r a grup frm the list select the Frum click n a thread in the preview windw belw the thread list, click the star that represents yur rating (1 5) 15. Subscribe Allws students and instructr t subscribe t either a frum r threads Instructr must enable this feature and can chse ne r the ther Subscribe t Frum Access a discussin frum click Subscribe s yu when smene psts anything t the frum click Unsubscribe t cancel Page 9

10 Bb Discussin Bards Subscribe t Thread Access a discussin frum click n a thread click Subscribe when yu g back t the main page f the Frum, a gray subscribe icn will appear next t each thread t which yu are subscribed t yu will be ed when smene replies t that thread t cancel subscriptin, access the thread and click Unsubscribe 16. Understanding Graded Frums When the Graded Frum ptin is selected, a Grade Center clumn is autmatically added A Graded Frum means that all threads psted by an individual fr the entire frum are graded as ne The frum is gradable directly in Discussin Bard s the instructr desn t have t g t the Grade Center 17. Grade a Frum: Instructrs can grade the frum withut entering the frum. Click the frum name and click Grade Discussin Frum A list f all participants will be displayed. Click the Grade buttn next t the Username. Page 10

The grade panel is in the right clumn Enter the grade in the grade field Prvide cnfidential cmments t the student in the Feedback Shwn t Learner field If yu attached a rubric, click the rubric name t use fr grading Yu have the ptin t use the Text Editr by clicking the A icn Click Submit t save the grade and feedback When yu ve finished grading an individual, yu can click the right-facing arrw next t the user s name t navigate t the next user s psts fr grading 18. Understanding Graded Threads Graded Threads als add an autmatic Grade Center Clumn When this ptin is selected, users cannt add new threads the instructr must begin the discussin with the initial pst Think f a Graded Thread Frum as a frum cntaining multiple sub-frums Page 11

12 Bb Discussin Bards Example: An instructr divides the semester int sectins, each sectin cntaining a number f chapters and varius key subjects r pints The instructr wants the students t participate in three individually graded discussin frums that cver the three majr subjects/pints in a sectin A Graded Thread can be used with three initial threads cntaining each questin r writing assignment The frum wuld be named Sectin 1 Discussin Frum and each questin (thread) wuld represent each f the three subjects r pints This wuld enable the instructr t grup the questins int ne frum rather than have three separate frums Each questin (r initial thread) wuld have its wn Grade Center clumn and its wn Grade Thread buttn The instructr must check Grade Thread and enter pints pssible when adding the Thread r it will be ungraded this will add the clumn in Grade Center 19. Grade a Thread: The instructr must access the frum t grade each f the threads (r sub-frums) Click the name f the frum t access it (r chse Open frm the ptins menu) click the thread t access it click the Grade Thread buttn a list f all participants will be displayed click the Grade buttn next t the user s name the individual s threads fr that graded thread are cllected nt a new page in preview mde srt and review the threads in the right clumn, click the Edit Grade buttn enter the grade in the Current Grade Value field yu can prvide cnfidential cmments t the student in the Feedback field yu have the ptin t recrd cnfidential grading ntes t self in Grading Ntes field click Save Grade The grade will be entered int the Grade Center Yu have the ptin t use the Text Editr view t frmat the cmments t the student and even include attachments using the visual text bx editr When yu ve finished grading an individual, yu can click the right-facing arrw next t Cntributrs t navigate t the next user s psts fr grading 20. Mderate a Frum Once a mderated frum has been created, all threads psted t that frum must be reviewed by the instructr, TA r mderatr Mderate Frum Access the frum click Mderate Frum a list f all submitted threads will be displayed click Mderate next t each thread review the thread and chse a status: Page 12

13 Bb Discussin Bards Publish this means it is apprved as-is click Submit Return this means that yu d nt apprve the student s wrk type a reasn fr returning the thread in the text bx click Submit Resubmit a Returned Thread The student can resubmit a returned thread: Access the frum access the returned thread in the preview pane, click Edit make the changes click Submit the thread is added t the Mderatin Queue again fr review 21. Grup Discussins: When instructrs create a grup, a discussin frum is autmatically created fr that grup, which is named the same as the grup name If the instructr chses t nt include a Discussin when setting up the grup, the grup discussin is still created, but nt available t students This discussin frum is available thrughut the semester fr members f the grup t use amngst themselves Yu can als assign specific discussin frums t grups Students access their grup discussins thrugh the Grups Area (Tls Grups) r thrugh My Grups under the Curse Menu, which is a list f Grups the student is enrlled in that are made available Instructrs access grup discussins in ne f tw ways: Grup Pages (either frm Tls n the menu r Users & Grups in Cntrl Panel) Discussins frm the Cntrl Panel then select the grup discussin frm the list Page 13
