1 New Prgram Prpsal: Spiritual Wellness & Cunseling Certificate Prgram Submitted by the Departments f Educatin and Allied Studies and Thelgy and Religius Studies, and the Office f Graduate Studies, Cllege f Arts and Sciences January 2013 This prpsal utlines a five- curse graduate certificate prgram in spiritual wellness and cunseling. This prpsal utlines the cntext fr this prgram, a prgram descriptin, ratinale, and budget analysis. 1. Cntext fr Additin f New Prgram a. Backgrund When persns seek assistance frm a pastral prfessinal, a therapist, r a health care prfessinal, their first gal is t be understd, t be seen in their human fullness. This is pssible nly if the prfessinals invlved have been sufficiently trained t understand the cmplexity f the whle persn. Unfrtunately, in ur highly prfessinalized sciety, individuals are trained in a specific, ften narrw, discipline. The end result is that pastral prfessinals may nt realize that an individual seeking their guidance wuld benefit mre frm the cunsel f a well- trained mental health prfessinal. Cnversely, mental health prfessinals may nt be cmpletely infrmed abut the religius and spiritual traditins f their patient and s may nt understand and respnd apprpriately t statements r cncerns f a mre spiritual nature and knw when t refer individuals t religius r spiritual prfessinals. Bth the pastral prfessins and the mental health and health care prfessins have recgnized this prblem by ffering trainings and cursewrk intended t bridge the wrlds f the spiritual and the psychlgical. Degrees are ffered in pastral cunseling; the cunseling and psychlgy prfessins have divisins devted t spiritual and religius issues; health care prfessinals are taught t administer spiritual surveys in rder t understand better and assist their patients. While these appraches are steps in the right directin, they still tend t perate in islatin; psychlgists talk t psychlgists, ministers t ministers, nurses t nurses. There is little crss- fertilizatin and little sharing amng disciplinary areas. This results in inadequate understanding f the varieties f experience and dispsitin present in thse seeking assistance. The prpsed prgram has been cnstructed in respnse t these issues. Bringing tgether pastral, psychlgical, and health care prfessinals, the gal f this prgram is t ensure that all three ppulatins have a mre nuanced understanding f spirituality and cunseling and the skills needed t wrk tgether in a cmplementary manner t best serve the interests f thse they are endeavring t assist. Offered as a certificate prgram, and available fr nn- degree r degree- bearing graduate credit, this fifteen semester- hur prgram seeks t bring tgether individuals interested in bradening their understanding f the helping prcess. The curse wrk is designed fr adult learners wh can share experience and expertise while learning frm clleagues. The central fcus is t enable mental health and health care prfessinals t appreciate the imprtance f the spiritual dimensin and becme cnversant with the scpe and practice f the mst cmmn religius and spiritual traditins. In equal measure thse frm religius and spiritual traditins will cme t 1

2 understand and appreciate the psychlgical dimensins f the helping prcess, as well as the basic principles f mental health. The prpsed prgram is aimed at three pssible audiences: pastral care prfessinals wh need additinal training in recgnizing and respnding t mental illness and prfund mental distress, mental health prfessinal wh need an enhanced understanding f the rle f spirituality in their clients lives, and medical prfessinals wh need a deeper understanding f hw spirituality and mental distress can impact their patients. The cncentratin n these three grups arse ut f the prfessinal literature f each field as well as ut f several fcus grups cnducted n campus. The prfessinal literature in all three fields - - pastral care, mental health and nursing/medicine - - clearly indicates that a cmpetent prfessinal needs an integrated understanding f physical, spiritual and psychlgical well- being. While the emphasis will vary depending n the prfessin, anyne wh wrks interpersnally with individuals needs t be versed in all three areas. In the prcess f develping this prgram, fcus grups were cnducted t explre the need fr such a prgram in the cmmunity and t btain cmmunity input n the substance f such a prgram. The participants in the n- campus fcus grups 1 enthusiastically supprted this perspective. Thse invlved in pastral care wrk clearly expressed the view that clergy and ther pastral prfessinals ften feel underprepared fr sme f the issues with which they are cnfrnted. In additin, educatin abut when and hw t refer an individual fr mre in- depth psychlgical assistance is lacking. In the mental health field the need fr mre knwledge abut the rle spirituality plays in clients lives is dcumented by numerus studies. In additin, clients reprt having difficulty lcating clinicians wh are knwledgeable abut their spiritual traditin and supprtive f their spiritual and religius rientatin. Several attendees at the fcus grup meetings encuraged the additin f the medical cmmunity t the target ppulatin. In particular, participants felt that nurses and dctrs wuld benefit frm additinal knwledge abut the mental health needs and psychlgical issues f patients, as well as their spiritual and religius beliefs. N ther institutin in the area, r indeed in the state, ffers a prgram that includes a fcus n these three ppulatins. Ursuline Cllege ffers a pastral ministry prgram that includes a cmpnent f pastral cunseling. Hwever, this prgram s primary purpse is t train individuals interested in ministry. Ashland University ffers a master s degree in pastral cunseling. This prgram is fcused slely n the Christian traditin and requires that students cmplete all f the cursewrk fr cunseling licensure and additinal cursewrk in thelgy. Fr mst students the prgram is at least 70 semester hurs. While n ther institutin in the area ffers a prgram similar t the ne we prpse, there is a develped field f pastral cunseling. The gal f these prgrams is t educate mental health prfessinals wh are als trained in a spiritual and/r religius traditin. It shuld als be nted that several ther Jesuit institutins have fully develped prgrams in pastral cunseling and spiritual care. In clsest prximity 1 Tw fcus grups were held in Nvember Nine members f the cmmunity participated. Individual phne cnversatins were held with seven individuals wh were nt able t participate in the meetings. Individuals frm a variety f faiths (Buddhist, Prtestant, Jewish, Cathlic) and frm different sectrs (Dicese f Cleveland Pastral Ministry, Cathlic Charities, Buddhist, Prtestant, Cathlic clergy and religius, cunselrs, clinician, nursing educatr, pastral educatin directr [CCF], fficer f NCOCA) were represented. 2

3 t Jhn Carrll are Lyla f Maryland and Lyla f Chicag. Bth schls ffer a number f different prgrams ranging frm dctral studies t certificate prgrams aimed at meeting the needs f mental health prfessinals as well as thse in ministry. The wrking grup (see Appendix A fr members) that put tgether this prpsal has cnsulted with faculty frm Lyla f Maryland. A review f the websites f several Jesuit schls indicates that mst f them ffer graduate study in this area. In the prcess f develping this prgram, the American Assciatin f Pastral Cunselrs was cntacted as a ptential partner. The American Assciatin f Pastral Cunselrs (AAPC) is a membership and certificatin rganizatin whse missin is t prvide spiritually infrmed and integrated cunseling, cllabrative cmmunity based services, training and educatin in rder t enhance the well being f individuals, families and cmmunities. Jhn Carrll University will have the pprtunity thrugh this prgram t apply t AAPC t becme a training center fr Pastral Care Specialists, a nn- certified categry, and Pastral Care Fellws, a certified categry f prfessinals. In the future, JCU may want t cnsider expanding the prpsed certificate prgram t ffer a Master s in Spiritual Wellness & Cunseling. The cre cunseling curses already exist as part f the Master s in Clinical Mental Health Cunseling. b. Purpse f the Prgram The prpsed prgram has three main gals: Ensuring that mental health, health care and pastral prfessinals f different faith traditins are knwledgeable enugh t respnd apprpriately t individuals wh express mental health and spiritual cncerns; Enabling mental health, health care and pastral prfessinals f different faith traditins t assist thse wh desire t integrate their spiritual perspective with their psychtherapeutic r medical treatment; Enhancing the prfessinal training f participants by educating them t discern hw and when t refer t anther prfessinal. The academic missin f the university will be enhanced by ffering a prgram that draws n the essence f the Jesuit missin t be persns fr thers in service. With an emphasis n schlarly engagement, academic excellence, spiritual attunement and service t thers, the prgram will cntinue the Jesuit traditin f mind and spirit in service t thers. In additin, by bringing varius faith traditins int ne classrm, the prgram will encurage mutual respect and understanding. Clients and patients will benefit frm clinicians trained t respect and understand spiritual beliefs. Graduates f the prgram will bring an enlightened understanding f hw faith and science can wrk tgether fr the benefit f the individual. 2. Organizatin and Administratin f Prgram a. The Certificate in Spiritual Wellness & Cunseling will be jintly spnsred by the Cunselr Educatin Prgram hused in the Department f Educatin and Allied Studies and the Thelgy and Religius Studies Department. b. Jb Descriptin fr Crdinatr: The Certificate in Spiritual Wellness & Cunseling will be directed by the crdinatr f the Cunselr Educatin Prgram. Given the nature f the prgram it makes sense t embed the respnsibilities f this prgram within the Cunselr Educatin Prgram. The current psitin summary states: 3

4 Crdinates the M.A. prgram in cmmunity cunseling. Carries ut duties f full- time, tenure track faculty; interviews applicants, recmmends fr admissin, assists with assessment and planning, schedules curses, chairs the prgram advisry cmmittee c. Recmmended line f Reprting: The crdinatr will be appinted by the Prvst and Academic Vice President and reprt t the Assciate Dean f Graduate Studies in the Cllege f Arts & Sciences fr the purpses f prgram review, budget, and prgram evaluatin. The crdinatr psitin will be fr three years. d. Advisry Bard: The advisry bard will meet regularly (at least nce each semester) t discuss curriculum, marketing, and assessment amng ther things. This bard will include: chairs f Educatin and Allied Studies and Thelgy and Religius Studies r their designees, Assciate Dean f Graduate Studies, Prgram Crdinatr, tw members each frm the health care cmmunity and the religius cmmunity, ne faculty each frm the departments f Educatin and Allied Studies and Thelgy and Religius Studies, a prgram graduate, and ther apprpriate faculty, nt t exceed a ttal cmmittee f 12 persns. The appintments will be made by the Assciate Dean in cnsultatin with department chairs and prgram crdinatr. 3. Curricular Requirements a. This prgram is designed as a chrt prgram fr students t cmplete in five semesters. Students will be accepted fr the fall semester in ne academic year and will cmplete the prgram in the spring semester f the fllwing academic year. Students nt part f a chrt will be allwed t take an individual curse(s) by way f exceptin f as specified by their prgram f study (i.e. electives in Clinical Mental Health Prgram). b. This prgram will have five three- credit curses. The curse f study is cnstructed t mve the students frm theretical and philsphical study and reflectin t practical applicatin. See attached curse descriptins in Appendix B. c. The sequencing f the curses reflects the desire t grund the students in a knwledge base and then mve t practical applicatin in a clinical, pastral r medical setting. d. While all five curses have been utlined, each needs further develpment. If the prgram is t begin in the fall f 2013, the first three curses shuld be fully develped by that time. Develpment f the curses shuld be a team effrt invlving the Directr f the prgram and the curse instructrs. e. 5 Given the inherently interdisciplinary nature f the cursewrk, the Prgram Advisry Bard will review cntent, syllabi and assignments fr the curses. 4. Implementatin Timetable a. Student Learning Outcmes Curse Level Curse I: Spirit & Psyche Students will be able t: v Demnstrate an understanding f the rles f spirit and psyche in the develpment f a healthy individual by cmparing and cntrasting spiritual and psychlgical develpmental theries. v Assess individual develpment frm bth a psychlgical and spiritual perspective. v Cmpse a persnal narrative abut their wn psych- spiritual develpment. Curse II: Traditin & Thery Students will be able t: v Outline the essential features that characterize religius traditins and psychlgical theries. v Describe the fundatinal beliefs and majr principles f the religius traditins which have influenced their clients and/r patients. v Summarize and explain the majr psychlgical theries and hw they may be applicable in specific circumstances. v Analyze ptential cnflicts between a particular spiritual traditin and a specific psychlgical thery. v Discriminate between the rles f spiritual guide and psychlgical helper. Curse III: Hliness & Whleness Students will be able t: v Explain religius and psychlgical views f whleness v Identify impediments t spiritual and psychlgical grwth. v Distinguish between a spiritual r psychlgical crisis. v Determine when an individual needs t be referred fr either spiritual r psychlgical guidance. Curse IV: Enlightened Self- Centeredness Students will be able t: v Articulate why self- care is essential. v Design a prgram t prtect against caregiver burnut and fster self- cmpassin. 5

6 v Explain the ratinale fr establishing clear prfessinal bundaries. v Demnstrate an understanding f the ethical principles relevant t their specific prfessinal wrk. Curse V: Encuntering the Other Students will be able t: v Synthesize and apply in a supervised case study r prject what has been learned. v Accept feedback abut their prfessinal wrk in a cnstructive manner. v Analyze and assess the effectiveness f interventins. Methd f Assessment Prgram Level v The prgram cncludes with a capstne curse (Encuntering the Other) in which students return t their prfessinal settings in rder t apply what they have learned by implementing a persnally designed prject r cnducting a case study. This prject will serve t synthesize student learning frm the previus cursewrk and will serve as an verall assessment f student success at the prgram level. v Prgram cmpleters will be sent a fllw up survey t assess prgram utcmes in light f their wrk in ministry r health care. An initial survey will be sent three mnths after prgram cmpletin; a fllw- up survey will be sent t participants tw years after cmpletin. v Fr thse students pursuing AAPC specialist r fellw designatin, an applicatin will be submitted fr apprval. Curse Level v Each curse will have an identified key assessment which will be a required assessment regardless f the instructr. This assessment will be designed t measure the majr learning utcmes f the curse. v Participants will be asked t cmplete curse evaluatins at the cnclusin f each curse. v Peer bservatins will be cnducted by apprpriate faculty frm the Educatin and Thelgy and Religius Studies Departments. Prgram Evaluatin and Review Prgram Outcmes v Increase verall graduate enrllment in the Cllege f Arts and Sciences; v Supprt Cllege- wide strategic initiatives in health and wellness and interdisciplinarity; v Build n the Jesuit traditin f ecumenism and rigrus intellectual pursuits; 6

7 v Cllabrate with cmmunity rganizatins and natinal prfessinal assciatins in supprt f University- wide strategic initiatives t engage the cmmunity; v Establish Jhn Carrll University as Nrthern Ohi s center fr the integratin f spirituality and health prfessins, and as a training center fr the Pastral Care Specialist designatin f the American Assciatin f Pastral Cunselrs. Key Indicatrs f Prgram Success v Enrllment: Our target enrllment fr each chrt will be students. Given the nature f the seminars, this number wuld be mst educatinally beneficial t student success in the prgram. In additin there is ptential t increase enrllment in the Clinical Mental Health Prgram and Thelgy and Religius Studies Prgram by way f accepting certificate credits tward the master s degrees in these disciplines. v Students frm varius faith traditins will enrll in the prgram. v Students frm a wide variety f health- related prfessins as well as ministry will enrll in the prgram. v Apprval by the American Assciatin f Pastral Cunselrs t be what the rganizatin calls a Categry I: Pastral Care Specialist training prgram. Thrugh this assciatin there will be the pssibility f preparing certified pastral cunselrs fr individuals with mental health training but n license, and fr preparing Fellws wh are licensed mental health prfessinals. Budget Expenses (See attached Budget Wrksheets fr New Prgrams in Appendix C) Faculty and Benefits Faculty salaries and benefits include three full- time faculty and tw part- time faculty each teaching ne f the five curses required fr the certificate. An annual salary increase f 3% is reflected in the five- year prjectin. Full time salary was calculated by taking the average f the three full time faculty members salaries and multiplying by ne- eighth (calculatin prvided by Catherine Ansn in Spnsred Research). Full- time faculty wh have been identified as ptential faculty t teach in this prgram include Dr. Cecile Brennan (cunseling educatin), Dr. Dnald Czzens (Thelgy and Religius Studies), and Dr. Nathan Gehlert (cunseling educatin). Ptential adjunct faculty include Sister Judith Wd (pastral cunselr), Sister Carl Ann Killran (clinician), and Dr. Karen Brer (CCF psychlgist). Administrative/Staff Supprt Currently the Cunseling Prgram has a part- time graduate assistant. The prpsed budget includes $4750 annually t increase this psitin t full- time t prvide additinal supprt t the prgram crdinatr. 7

8 Other administrative supprt will be absrbed by the Graduate Studies Office (inquiries, admissin, recrds management, marketing) and the Departments f Thelgy and Religius Studies (issuing f certificates) and Educatin and Allied Studies (develpment f prgram evaluatin frms). Capital Equipment Nne required. This prgram will use existing space and technlgy. Library Supprt After meeting with a staff member in the library, we determined that ur cllectin already hlds many f the prfessinal jurnals and bks that wuld be relevant t this new prgram. In additin, the Clinical Mental Health Cunseling Library budget will be able t cver the csts f sme materials that wuld be equally relevant t that prgram. This prpsed budget includes $1000 fr the first tw years fr vides and ther resurces that wuld be specific t the prgram. Subsequent years the budget wuld be reduced. Annual Operating Expenses Majr expenditures reflected in the perating budget include: v Annual Sympsium a public event with an invited speaker t address cntemprary issues in spiritual care and cunseling (t begin in the secnd year f the prgram). (est. budget: $1000) v Opening Retreat each chrt will begin with a tw- day retreat which will start in the evening and cntinue vernight t the next day. The gals f the retreat are t establish grup chesin and trust and begin the instructinal prgram in an experiential manner. (est. budget: $850 per 10 students [quted by the Jesuit Retreat Huse f Cleveland]) v Prfessinal Memberships JCU wuld jin the Assciatin fr Spiritual, Ethical, and Religius Values in Cunseling (ASERVIC) and the American Assciatin f Pastral Cunselrs (AAPC). (est. budget: $500) v Prfessinal Cnferences Prgram crdinatr r faculty wuld attend tw prfessinal cnferences annually; ne in the first year. Three pssible cnferences wuld be the ASERVIC, AAPC, and the Mid- Year Cnference n Religin and Spirituality (American Psychlgical Assciatin). (est. budget: $3600) v Curse Develpment in the first tw years mnies wuld be budgeted fr curse develpment (est. budget: $3000) v Csts related t the Cpy Center, Mail Center, and telephne usage will be shared by the Cunselr Educatin Prgram and Office f Graduate Studies as apprpriate. 9 During the academic year, three fcus grups were held in part t determine interest in the cmmunity fr the prpsed certificate prgram. Individuals frm bth the clinical and spiritual cmmunities and frm varius denminatins prvided psitive feedback n the nature f the prgram and n varius cnstituents that wuld be interested in pursuing the certificate. We are prjecting a chrt f 10 students in the first chrt, 15 in the secnd chrt, 20 in a third, and maintaining a chrt f in subsequent years. See sectin n Revenue belw fr a mre detailed descriptin f ptential students. v Similar Prgrams Given the uniqueness f ur intended audience, and given that this is a stand- alne certificate prgram, there are n ther prgrams in the area that are quite like this ne. There are prgrams that ffer sme cursewrk in pastral cunseling as part f degree prgrams: Ursuline Cllege ffers a 36 credit hur master s f arts in ministry which includes 6 credit hurs in pastral cunseling and caring. Ashland University, Cleveland Center, ffers a 144 quarter hur Master s f Divinity which has an ptinal track in Pastral Cunseling and Care (28 quarter hurs); they als ffer a Master s f Arts in Practical Thelgy (86 quarter hurs) with an ptinal track in Pastral Cunseling and Care (32 quarter hurs). St. Mary s Seminary and Graduate Schl f Thelgy, ffers a Master f Arts (44 hurs) and a Master f Divinity (112 hurs), bth f which have ne 2 credit curse in Pastral Cunseling. v Demand fr Graduates Graduates f this prgram, all f whm are already active prfessinals, will have enhanced their prfessinal skills in a manner that makes them much mre marketable. Within the mental health field the need fr clinicians wh are spiritually sensitive and knwledgeable abut varius religius traditins is grwing dramatically as the United States becmes an even mre pluralistic natin. In hspital settings, the requirement fr nurses t administer a spiritual assessment is becming cmmnplace. Medical prfessinals are als at the intersectin f life and death decisins that frequently becme intertwined with spiritual beliefs and values. A medical prfessinal prepared fr these situatins is clearly preferred ver ne wh is nt. Clergy and spiritual caregivers wh are able t distinguish when an individual is in a spiritual crisis, and when the issue 9

10 is mre psychlgical and even medical in nature, are mre able t help their cngregants and thers effectively. v Revenue Generated Given the diversity f the intended audience, we are ffering tw prgram ptins. Sme students will seek graduate credit that will be used twards a master s degree in Clinical Mental Health Cunseling, Thelgy and Religius Studies, r sme ther degree prgram. These students will be charged the graduate tuitin rate (currently $695 per credit hur). Prjected revenue ver the next five years reflects an annual graduate tuitin increase f 1%. The prjected revenue frm graduate tuitin als reflects a 33% tuitin schlarship that is affrded t all graduate students in the Thelgy and Religius Studies Department. Marketing and Cmmunicatin Plan The ther ptin will be fr students wh are interested in the certificate but nt degree credit. Fr these students we prpse a prgram rate f $5000, with a discunted rate f $3750 fr thse invlved in church ministry. (These rates are cmpetitive with the St. Mary Seminary and Graduate Schl f Thelgy). The design team believed that ffering these tw ptins wuld meet the needs f a mre diverse pl f prspective students and wuld therefre have the ptential fr increasing the enrllment. Please see the attached budget wrksheets fr the prjected net tuitin revenue ver the next five years. Since it is difficult t prject the number f students that will chse which ptin in the first chrt, the budget reflects half f the students pting fr graduate credit and half fr the prgram rate. Fr the purpses f prjecting revenue fr the nn- degree students, an average f the prpsed prgram rate and discunted prgram rate is used ($4375); and a per credit hur rate is used in calculating annual tuitin revenue ($292). The budget can be mdified after the first and secnd chrt when a pattern may well be established. Web and Print Materials v Prgram Infrmatin (Purpse, Intended Audience, Curriculum, Learning Gals, Admissin Requirements, etc.) will be added t the websites f the Department f Thelgy and Religius Studies and Educatin and Allied Studies, Cllege f Arts and Sciences, and Office f Graduate Studies. Shuld ur applicatin t the American Assciatin f Pastral Cunselrs be 10

11 apprved, ur prgram wuld be included n their website as well. v The Office f Graduate Studies has a paper infrmatin sheet that is standard fr all f the cllege s prgrams. One f these culd be created fr the prgram r a different type f brchure culd be used. v An initial campaign t market the new prgram and recruit an initial chrt will be directed by the Office f Graduate Studies and will include: A receptin intrducing the prgram t the cmmunity that will bring tgether cmmunity leaders frm rganizatins and institutins frm ministry, educatin, and health care. A mass mailing t area churches, synaggues, msques schls, and ther places f wrship, apprpriate ffices within the Dicese f Cleveland, headquarters f the United Church f Christ in Cleveland, Pastral Care ffices in lcal hspitals, schl cunselrs in religiusly- affiliated schls, cunseling agencies, hspices, rehabilitatin centers, adult day care, hspitals, and physical therapy departments. Advertisement in varius ther media, i.e. Dicesan newspaper, Cleveland Jewish News, Cleveland Plain Dealer religin annuncements, web- sites f prfessinal and religius rganizatins. v On- ging marketing and cmmunicatin f the prgram will be included in the Office f Graduate Studies Annual Strategic Marketing Plan. Cllabratin with Office f Graduate Studies: The Office f Graduate Studies is respnsible fr enrllment services fr graduate prgrams in the Cllege f Arts and Sciences. As such the ffice will wrk cllabratively with the Spiritual Wellness & Cunseling Certificate Prgram in such areas as: v Fielding initial inquiries; v Prcessing applicatins; v Admitting students t the prgram; v Managing student recrds; v Issuing Certificates f Cmpletin; and v Marketing the prgram and recruiting students. Curse III: Hliness & Whleness (3 credits) This curse investigates religius and spiritual views f human whleness, identifies impediments t spiritual and psychlgical grwth, and distinguishes between a spiritual and a psychlgical crisis. Students will learn hw t discern when an individual needs t be referred fr either spiritual r psychlgical guidance. Curse IV: Enlightened Self- Centeredness (3 credits) This curse fcuses n the respnsibility fr caregivers t attend t their wn needs in rder t avid undermining their effectiveness, falling int ethical lapses, r suffering frm cmpassin fatigue. Students will demnstrate an understanding f their ethical respnsibility fr self- care by designing a prgram t prtect against caregiver burnut. 13
