Why do we make bad decisions? Contrary to popular belief, it is not always due to incompetence or lack of experience but rather a flawed decision making process. Too often, we live by anecdote and intuition when what we need is antidote and analytics. Prosecution for health care fraud continues to be strong, especially in the Middle District of Florida, which historically has had some of the largest fines and sanctions in the nation. A corporate compliance plan is a necessity in today s regulatory environment. A plan, a system for preventing and detecting violations of the law, grew out of the 1991 enactment of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines. The sentences are lessened for physicians who have in place effective compliance plans at the time the offense occurred. This session addresses key components of a plan, how to monitor and update your plan and why it is worth your time to adopt and implement one and a rational approach to physician office compliance plan implementation and enforcement. Marriage, Divorce and Conscious Uncoupling in the Healthcare Industry: how the mergers of hospitals and physician groups, and the resulting breakups, have impacted the practice of medicine in Florida and how practice administrators do their jobs. Hundreds of thousands of physician groups merged into hospitals and health systems in the last 10 years. This changed not only the practice of medicine, but also the role of the medical group manager. This session will explain the economic and political forces that caused the trend, explain the different ways that groups and hospitals have married, and best ways to approach the marriage during the courtship period from legal and operational standpoints. It will address what physicians are looking for out of the marriage, including ways to secure what you are asking for in a prenuptial agreement of sorts.
