2 Boosting sustainable participation The Australian government s budget, will deliver $674 million to boost higher education, training and employment outcomes for regional Australia. To secure a future of sustainable growth in regional markets, it is vital to strengthen synergistic links between regional tertiary education, infrastructure and rural communities. Inequities in rates of tertiary education participation between regional and metropolitan populations have been a longstanding challenge. In a time of economic transition and education reform, tertiary education providers are tasked with creating innovative approaches to the provision of regional tertiary education to overcome specific regional complexities and increase participation. Collaboration in regional contexts is critical to overcoming resource and infrastructure constraints. Partnerships between education sectors, community and industry provide a vital opportunity to increase accessibility and grow sustainable participation in regional education. Furthermore, such linkages are essential to achieving research excellence and increasing aspiration in low SES areas. Optimise the benefits of partnerships by: Developing responsive and flexible delivery models Building sustainable linkages with industry and community Establishing effective governance frameworks for the provision of regional campuses Achieving social inclusion Increasing educational and employment aspiration in low SES students To register fax back the registration form to or call our customer service department on Regional Organisations & Councils Regional Business & Development Corporations Local, State & Federal Government Universities Who should attend? 5 Workshops Monday 17th October, 2011 Thursday 20th October, 2011 Building collaborative regional tertiary education networks Pre-Conference Workshop A Monday 17th October, am-4.00pm Partnerships between education sectors, community and industry provide a vital opportunity to grow sustainable participation in regional education. This workshop will stimulate and motivate leaders of regional tertiary education to think more creatively about the value of building strong networks with their local communities. It will provide ideas for collaboration and co-operative involvement on numerous levels. It will draw on the Engaging Leadership Framework and related games which have been developed through two Australian Learning and Teaching Council major projects on organisational leadership and change management. The interactive tools will provide a platform to generate innovative and fresh ways of thinking about the place, role and relationship of regional tertiary education campuses within their communities. During this interactive workshop you will explore: Methods for offering curriculum relevant to regional strengths Strategies for designing authentic assessment tasks grounded in community-based projects Techniques for providing workplace experience with local organisations and industries Tools for pursuing collaborative research with local industries Strategies for involving community leaders in mentoring programs Approaches to providing educational pathways for diverse learners About your workshop leaders: Associate Professor Neil Trivett Centre for Innovation Learning and Professional Practice (CLIPP), University of Ballarat Neil is the Director of CLIPP. Cross sectoral distributed learning Post-Conference Workshop B Thursday 20th October, am-4.00pm During this workshop you will explore how Deakin University has developed and implemented a successful distributed learning model involving five TAFE partners across six different regional locations. The project team responsible for Deakin at Your Doorstep will discuss the lessons learnt throughout the process of setting up a long term sustainable partnership between TAFE and university. What should be in an agreement between partners, how to maximise the infrastructure costs in setting up a distributed learning network and how to ensure long term relationships are established will be outlined during the workshop. To give workshop participants relevant perspectives of this delivery model, a range of guest speakers will be included via videoconference during the day. By attending you will take away: Methods for establishing the relationships and formalising agreements between sectors Tools for designing facilities and technology infrastructure for delivery across multi sites Techniques for devising a win-win concurrent delivery model Strategies for mapping the pathways and maximising credit for cross sector articulation Approaches to delivering a course that meets cross sectoral transition needs Ways of overcoming differences in organisational cultures About your workshop leader: Alistair McCosh Deakin at Your Doorstep Deakin University Alistair McCosh has been involved in the training and education sectors for over 20 years.
