1 Wilkes University Graduate Teacher Educatin Department Curse Number: EDAM 5037 Curse Title: Authentic Inquiry-Based Learning in the 21 st Century Classrm Graduate Educatin Department Missin The missin f the Graduate Educatin Department at Wilkes University is t prvide the educatinal cmmunity with pprtunities t becme leaders in classrm instructin and in the administratin f schls. As such, the Graduate Educatin Department seeks t prmte the highest levels f intellectual grwth and career develpment thrugh a cllabrative envirnment that supprts teaching in a diverse learning envirnment, while valuing cmmitment t the educatinal cmmunities it serves. Curse Descriptin: Authentic Inquiry-Based Learning in the 21 st Century Classrm is arranged in five units. The first unit intrduces the bjectives and materials f the curse. The secnd unit intrduces the cmpnents f inquiry-based learning. The guiding principles f inquiry-based instructin are defined and explred thrugh a curse activity analyzing hw students in a 21 st Century classrm wuld benefit frm inquiry-based instructin. In the third unit, the learner will examine vide mdelings f inquiry-based learning t determine best practices and self-assess his/her wn practices The furth unit engages the learner in a hands-n applicatin f the teacher actin research cycle with the develpment and implementatin f an inquirybased lessn plan. The final unit cncludes with a metacgnitive research paper that integrates the learner s persnal reflectins, curse activity results, and additinal schlarly research. All materials needed by the learner are embedded within the nline multimedia presentatin and will be dwnladed and printed by the learner as needed. Curse Technlgy Integratin The nline learner can access all curse materials, student accunts, study grups, and with an Internet cnnectin. This enables the learner t chse the time and the place t cmplete curse requirements as determined by the curse facilitatr. The nline learner participates in sync pint discussins, creates learning lg entries, and accesses curse materials thrugh the curse structure. Curse Requirements & Assessments The learner must prgress thrugh the curse by cmpleting all activities while engaging in persnal reflectin and actively participating in nline discussins. Facilitatr Determined Curse Plicies Attendance Plicy: The nline learner is expected t meet all f the assignment deadlines that are set by the facilitatr. Curse Expectatins & Late Wrk Plicy: All curse wrk is expected t be cmpleted by the assigned date. If there are extenuating circumstances, the learner needs t infrm the facilitatr. Sync Pint Discussins cannt be made up under any circumstances. At the facilitatr s discretin, the learner may submit quizzes, essays, learning lgs, and research review assignments late. Fr each day that an assignment is late, a reduced grade f ne level n the rubric will be given. Grading: The fllwing wrk will be an evaluated by the curse facilitatr and will be used t determine a curse grade based n established rubrics: Learning Lg Entries (reflectins and answers t questins cllected electrnically frm activities thrughut the curse) Sync Pint Discussin Activities Quizzes (multiple chice and essay questins at the end f each unit designed t measure cntent knwledge/understanding and applicatin). 5 2.0 = C Academic achievement belw the average required fr graduatin 0.0 = F Failure. N graduate curse credit A grade f "X" indicates assigned wrk yet t be cmpleted in a given curse. Except in thesis wrk, grades f "X" will be given nly in exceptinal circumstances. Grades f "X" must be remved thrugh satisfactry cmpletin f all curse wrk n later than fur weeks after the end f the final examinatin perid f the semester in which the "X" grade was recrded. Failure t cmplete required wrk within this time perid will result in the cnversin f the grade t 0. An extensin f the time allwed fr the cmpletin f wrk shuld be endrsed by the facilitatr in the frm f a written statement and submitted t the Registrar. Wilkes Graduate Teacher Educatin Prgram Plicies Academic Hnesty: Academic Hnesty requires students t refrain frm cheating and t prvide clear citatins fr assertins f fact, as well as fr the language, ideas, and interpretatins fund within the wrks f thers. Failure t frmally acknwledge the wrk f thers, including Internet resurces, written material, and any assistance with class assignments, cnstitutes Plagiarism. Cheating and plagiarism are serius academic ffenses that cannt be tlerated in a cmmunity f schlars. Vilatins f academic hnesty will be addressed at the prgrammatic and university levels and may result in a decisin f curse failure r prgram dismissal. Prgram Evaluatin Wilkes University Graduate Teacher Educatin Prgrams are fully accredited by bth Middle States and the PA Department f Educatin. As such, it is smetimes necessary t cllect student wrk fr examinatin by prgram reviewers. By virtue f this statement, ntificatin is given t all students that their wrk may be cllected and used as artifacts t supprt prgram gals and as such may be reviewed by external evaluatrs. The review prcess is fr prgram evaluatin nly and in n way will materials be utilized fr any ther purpse r gain. Students may decline t participate in this prcess by sending a written and signed nte t their respective facilitatr at the beginning f each curse.
