Ask a student t describe it (what was it abut? hw was the infrmatin presented? etc.) Have the students view the examples f PSAs. Make sure t mentin that they were created by students. Discuss with students -- Which PSA was mre effective? Why? Recrd n the bard r verhead: What makes a gd PSA? (N template needed. Teacher and cnsultant help infrm discussin.) Elicit frm the grup a list f characteristics f PSAs. Teacher and cnsultant can defer t the Characteristics f a PSA handut. Make sure t pint ut the similarities and differences between PSAs and cmmercials. PSAs try t persuade their viewers t take a specific actin r t adpt a favrable view tward sme service, institutin, issue, r cause PSAs use cncise language and get t the pint quickly, as the average PSA is nly secnds in length PSAs are based n facts and cite qutatins and data PSAs use an engaging frmat f mixed media t hld the viewer s interest 2004 Teaching Matters, Inc. 2

3 Pass ut the rubric fr PSAs and ask students t read selectins frm it (pssibly first and last clumn fr each criterin). Shw samples again. This time ask students t wrk in pairs t rate the PSAs based n the rubric. Take ne criterin at a time and have students justify their ratings with specific examples frm the PSAs. Intrduce students t the prject and the varied tasks invlved. Use an verhead prjectr t shw the Digital Dcumentaries website and the Rad Map handut and ask students t review (read alud) the steps t create a PSA. Discuss with students -- What makes a strng tpic? What are we passinate abut? What d we have access t (images, subject interviews, infrmatin)? Whm culd we invite t ur classrm t film? Are we studying smething that wuld be an interesting PSA? What perspective d we want t present in ur PSA? Explain the prgram prcedures t students Students will wrk in grups f fur r five t create a PSA. Student PSAs will be n lnger than ne minute in length. Students will develp and recrd an riginal (vicever) script and will use riginal vide ftage as well as relevant primary surce material (phtgraphs, riginal artwrk, music, radi bradcasts, etc.). Cperatin and cllabratin with classmates will be essential if the prject is t be successful. Grups shuld brainstrm several tpics fr PSAs and share them with the class. The teacher will help each grup chse the mst prmising tpic. OPTIONAL: Intrduce the pitch prcess, in which students wrk in grups t create tpic prpsals and then pitch their ideas t the entire class. Each grup will present ne idea t the class and the class will prvide feedback. Students create a pitch fr their particular theme with the fllwing elements: 1) ratinale, 2) pssible vide surces r interviews, and 3) descriptin f what the finished prduct will lk like. Reiterate that PSAs try t persuade their audience institutin, issue, r cause In rder t d that effectively, students must cnduct research Students will research fr several days (length and depth t be determined by the teacher) t becme experts n their selected tpic and t develp a persuasive script Discuss the prcess f develping a narratin. Teacher and cnsultant mdel the prcess f reviewing a sample persuasive script, creating an utline, and then frming a narratin. Narratins shuld be between 30 and 60 secnds in length Teaching Matters, Inc. 5

Encurage students t develp a full list f research questins n their tpic. Each grup will ultimately be respnsible fr writing a persuasive script n a specific pint f view r perspective pertaining t their tpic. Intrduce teacher-created resurce list n the Digital Dcumentaries web site. OPTIONAL: Teacher and cnsultant can create a htlist r TrackStar track. Intrduce ther pssible research surces including newspapers, artifacts, phtgraphs r riginal research (e.g. pinin plls, surveys, measurements, science experiments, interviews with experts r witnesses). Alternatively, in special educatin classrms r classrms with literacy issues, students shuld be prvided with articles pre-printed frm the web n their tpic. 11 Sessin 6 Creating the First Draft Gals Students will be able t: Assemble a first draft f their PSAs Make editing decisins Student Teacher Overhead Technlgy Editing the Vide Clips Nne Editing the Vide Clips Laptp cmputer Internet cnnectin Time Required (including tday): tw r three 45 minute class perids (Whle-class) Cnsultant and/r teacher demnstrate the decisin-making prcess used in editing. Explain that the riginal PSA ftage must be edited dwn t 60 secnds, requiring that the editrs make creative decisins based n the perspective that they want t prtray. Prir t this sessin, teachers shuld have all narratins recrded and vides upladed t the cmputer. (Small-grup) Grups discuss and articulate the main theme f their PSAs in tw sentences with the teacher. These tw sentences will be used t guide editing decisins. (Small-grup) Student vide editrs wrk in grups t assemble a first draft f the PSA (stringing tgether still clips, narratin, music, dramatizatin, etc.).
