During the May December period of 1946 the Swedish defence headquarters received, according to official statistics, 997 such reports, but that flgure ia an underrating of the real number of sighting reports from Sweden and the Scandinavian countries during that year. In about 100 incidents rocket - shaped objects - or luminous phenomena - were n as they erashed towards the earth"s surface. In many instances it seemed as if the phenomena were remote- controlled to crash inte lakes and other water surfac Oespite lengthy and extensive search of the bottoms of several lakes the defence force dld not succeed in securing any metat, or similar wreckage parts, which with certainty could point to any kind of rocket construction. A rch through 140 American newspapers has since revealed that the American sighting wave of 1947 had greater proportions than what was generally believed. For the summer months of June and July, alone, there are more than 850 ightings on fil in American arehivas (3). There was a striking resemblanc with the Swedish phenomena a year before, although the two slghting waves described objects of completely different shapes. In both waves thousands of unprepared witnesses $aw objects which neither they, nor their governments, could explain sufficiently. In Bweden, as WIPll as in the United States, interest was primarily focused on the Sovlet Union, who wa bellevad to be responsible for the strange occurences. Such a series o tests must have been oolhardy in view o th risk of discovery through scrap on the ground. The proceedings of the Swedish committee's meeting clearly mirror the bewilderment of the military investigators. Participators in this work were the ch mical laboratorles of the FOA' ction I, led by pro or Gusta Ljun99ren. This phenomenon made the FOA chemists suapect the lumpa had been on the ground for a lang time, a theory contradicted by the Y witn ' report. The few minor remalns of metallic objecta FOA investigated could be given reasonable ewplanatlona without taking rackets or mis ile inta account. In some c the broadcasts were similar to those that had directed the radio guided versions of the V1, but it was not often that these transmissions were intercepted simultaneausly to reported visual sightings. Liaison between radar and fighter airplanes was not very effective in the Swediah Air Force in those days. In the autumn of 1946 there were attempts, however, to create auch a defence organi2ation in the Btockhol area but the rackets never appeared, or were observed when radar and fightera were on non-alert.
