2 The first screen of Apsfilter asks you to accept the license agree m e n t. Enter a "y" and press the <ENTER > key.

3 In this scr e e n the autho r asks if you would like to requ e s t his mailing address. You would normally enter "n" and press the <ENTER > key. You can enter "y" if you would like the authors address.

4 Just press the <ENTER > key here to enter the Apsfilter setup.

5 Press the <ENTER > key to continue

6 This scr e e n show s the per mis sio n s for apsfilte r. You should just have to enter "y" and press the <ENTER > key.

7 This scr e e n allows you to setu p a new print e r or cha n g e an existing one. We want to add a new printer so enter an "a" and press the <ENTER > key.

8 Now we are rea dy to add our print e r settin g s. For this exa m pl e we are going to setup an Epson Stylus C62 printer that is connected via a USB port. For nor m a l printin g, you will only nee d to fill in value s for section s 1, 2 and 3. Type a "1" and press the <ENTER > key

9 Here we will choose the appropriate print driver for our printer. I recommend starting with the drivers under the option 4 gimp print menu. The drivers in this menu seem to work well with most printers. If you cannot find a suita bl e drive r, you can try driver s unde r the othe r men u options. Choose "4" and press the <ENTER > key.

10 Her e are our naviga tio n options while sea r c hi n g for our drive r. Pre ss the <ENTER > key to continue.

11 Her e is the first scr e e n you will see. We will hit the ente r key to scroll through the screen until we find a driver that referenc e s our Epson Stylus C62 printer.

12 After scrolling down a shor t time we find "29 - Epson Stylus C60 [stp/es c p 2- c60]". We will want to reme m b e r the number "29". when we get to the end of the list. Pres s the <PAGE DOWN > key until we get to the botto m of the list.

13 Now enter the number "29" and press the <ENTER > key to choose the Epso n C62 drive r. You will be ask e d if you wan t to acce p t that drive r. You want to answer "y" and press the <ENTER > key again.

14 We hav e select e d the drive r and now we wan t to tell Apsfilte r how your printer is connected to your PC. Enter option "2" and press the <ENTER > key.

15 Our printer is connected to the PC via a USB cable so we will choose option "1". Choose option "1" and press the <ENTER > key.

16 We are workin g with a Linux OS and mos t likely your printe r is on the port LPT1. Sinc e we are conn e c t e d with a USB cable we will want to use the option show n unde r the LPT1 option that says "USB unde r Linux". Unde r "Full pat h of the par allel print device:" we want to ente r: Full path of the parallel print device: /dev/usb/lp0 press the <ENTER > key If we were using a parallel printer cable to connect to the PC we would have entered /dev/lp0

17 Optio n 2 show s 'par allel' but that is OK. That valu e will show for par allel or usb port print e r s. We are now rea dy to define the pap e r form a t. Choos e option "3" and pres s the < E NT ER > key.

18 We wan t to choos e our pap e r form a t. I will choos e "US Lette r" for this example. Choose option "3" and press the <ENTER > key.

19 Now we are rea dy to test our print e r by printin g a test pag e. Choos e "T" and pres s the < E NT ER > key. You will be aske d if you are sur e you want to prin t a test. After a few seco n d s, a tes t pag e should star t to prin t. If you do not get a test pag e, you may nee d to go back to option "1" to ens u r e you have chos e n the corr e c t drive r for your print e r. Anothe r thing to check would be the device path in option "2" to mak e sur e the r e isn't a typo in the path name.

20 Here is a screens hot of the test page being sent to the printer. After the test page is successful, press the <ENTER > key to return to the main setup menu.

21 If your print e r is setu p prop e r ly, we are rea dy to finalize the installa tio n. Choos e the "I" option and pres s the <E N T ER > key to give your print e r a name.

22 Here we will enter the name of our printer. If you just press the <ENTER > key your print e r will be given the nam e "lp". We will nam e our print e r "EPSON_C62". Press the <ENTER > key to continue.

23 Press the <ENTER > key to accept the printer name.

24 Congratulations! You have setup your printer. You can setup more printers if you like. We will choos e option "Q" to quit Apsfilter. You can hit the <ENTER > key repeatedly to exit Apsfilter and get back to the DSL Control Pan el.

25 You are almost rea dy to print. Open a console windo w so tha t all applications will recognize your printer. Type "export PRINTER = E P S O N_C62" substituting the name of your printer for 'EPSON_C62' Now you should be able to use your printe r in all applica tio n s. Congratulations on setting up your printer!!

26 Now we nee d to star t the print e r dae m o n befor e we can print in applications. Click on the "Printing/lpd" button to turn on the print daemon. If you are runni n g a reg ul a r har d drive inst all, you are done. If you are running from USB, CD or frugal install with the backup/restore featur es, there are a few more steps to complete to save your printer settings. THE FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS ARE FOR LIVE CD, USB and FRUGAL install option s utilizin g the backup/rest o r e featur e s.

27 Open the Emelf m file man a g e r and choos e the "filetool.lst" file in the / home/dsl directory. Choose the file and click the <EDIT> button.

28 In your filetool.lst file you will want to add three entries. I have separated the m from the othe r s for illust r a ti o n. The last entry mus t cont ai n your printer name. For our example, the entries would be as follows: opt/printcap opt/apsfilter/ var/spool/lpd/epso N_C62

29 Now we want to go to the /opt directory in Emelfm to add some commands to the bootloc al.s h file. This file cont ain s script s you would like to run whe n your PC boots up. Choos e the bootloc al.s h file and pres s the <EDIT > button.

30 We need to enter the same comand in bootlocal.sh that we entered in the console earlie r. This will allow all apps to use your print e r without you having to enter your printer information.

31 This is one mor e option you can add to bootloc al.s h if you would like the printer daemon to start automatically at boot. As shown above, add / usr/sbin/lpd and save. That' s it for this howto. Enjoy your print e r!!
