1 SYSTEM AND NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR The Burdekin Region offers an outstanding lifestyle that is both contemporary and relaxed. The major township of Ayr is less than an hour s drive to the city of Townsville. The Burdekin has abundant water supplies, excellent health and educational facilities, and an excellent array of cultural, sporting, and recreational activities. The System and Network Administrator is responsible for maintaining Council s information and communications technology infrastructure and help desk. The Position The key responsibilities include: Maintain Council s server infrastructure (hardware and software) including VMware vsphere, virtual servers and physical servers. Maintain Council s enterprise storage and recovery infrastructure including the storage area network (SAN), network attached storage (NAS) and direct attached storage (DAS). Maintain Council s network infrastructure (hardware and software). Maintain Council s core Windows infrastructure services including Active Directory (AD), Certificate Services, Windows Software Update Services (WSUS), File and Print and Windows Deployment Services (WDS). The Person The successful applicant will possess the following attributes: Tertiary qualification in areas relevant to the position and/or extensive experience in systems, network, storage and vsphere administration. Ability to plan and prioritise own work to meet deadlines and achieve outcomes. Demonstrated high level of communication skills both written and oral with demonstrated ability to report clearly on complex matters and deliver presentations to varied audiences. Salary and conditions of employment will be in accordance with the Queensland Local Government Officers Award - State and Burdekin Shire Council s Enterprise Bargaining Agreement. The applicable salary is to a ceiling of Grade 6 ($85,434pa) with the commencing salary dependent upon the skills and experience of the successful applicant. 2 POSITION DESCRIPTION POSITION TITLE: System and Network Administrator POSITION NUMBER: AWARD: CERTIFIED AGREEMENT: Queensland Local Government Officers Award State Burdekin Shire Council Enterprise Bargaining Agreement AWARD LEVEL: Level 6 REPORTS TO: PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Coordinator Council Chambers, Young Street, Ayr POSITION OBJECTIVE Maintain and support Council s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Infrastructure and Help Desk. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES The key responsibilities may be modified from time to time to ensure the expected outcomes are coordinated with Council s operational and corporate plans. Without limiting the above, the key responsibilities shall include: Maintain Council s server infrastructure (hardware and software) including VMware vsphere, virtual servers and physical servers. Maintain Council s enterprise storage and recovery infrastructure including the storage area network (SAN), network attached storage (NAS) and direct attached storage (DAS). Maintain Council s network infrastructure (hardware and software). Maintain Council s core Windows infrastructure services including Active Directory (AD), Certificate Services, Windows Software Update Services (WSUS), File and Print and Windows Deployment Services (WDS). Maintain Council s Microsoft Server applications including Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint and Lync. Maintain Council s other systems including Library Management, Web Services, Remote Access, Archiving, Help Desk and Disaster Management. Maintain Council s cloud based services including protection, web protection and endpoint protection. Support of software certification to ensure system stability and security. Support the documentation, quality control and testing of operational procedures and disaster recovery plans for Council s IT systems. Provide detailed and expert advice to internal and external clients on information technology matters. Analyse new and future technologies and trends for potential benefits to Council, and report recommendations to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Coordinator. Maintain an understanding of Council s key IT systems and hardware to assist with problem solving. Manage special projects as allocated by the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Coordinator. Undertake such other tasks as may be assigned by the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Coordinator. Provide support for Council s core Technology One systems including Financials, Property and Rating and Enterprise Content Management. Assist and support the Information and Communications (ICT) Coordinator and provide relief in their absence.
3 Report to the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Coordinator in a timely manner on issues and activities likely to influence Council operations or adversely impact relations with Council s customers. (Guidance not always readily available within the organisation) Decisions and actions taken at this level may have a significant effect on programs/projects/work areas being managed POSITION REQUIREMENTS Knowledge Comprehensive knowledge of server operating systems including Windows Server, VMware ESXi and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Comprehensive knowledge of current client operating systems Comprehensive knowledge of server and client computer hardware and peripherals. Comprehensive knowledge of VMware vsphere server virtualisation. Comprehensive knowledge of iscsi Storage Area Networks. Comprehensive knowledge of Citrix XenApp and Citrix Access Gateway (CAG). Comprehensive knowledge of core Windows Server infrastructure services including Active Directory (AD), Certificate Services, Windows Software Update Services (WSUS), File and Print and Windows Deployment Services (WDS). Comprehensive knowledge of Microsoft Server applications including Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint and Lync. Comprehensive knowledge of layer 2 and layer 3 networking in a TCP/IP environment. Sound knowledge of standard desktop applications including Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite. Sound knowledge of best-practice procedures and standards within the Information Technology field. Working knowledge of Council s structure, services and departmental functions Understanding of equal employment opportunities, work health and safety, and ethical practice principles. Experience and Qualifications Relevant Degree or Associate Degree in Information Technology is required; or extensive experience in the System Administration and Network Administration fields (a minimum of five (5) years). VMware Certified Professional (VCP), ITIL Foundation, Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA) and Microsoft Certified Solutions Engineer (MCSE) certifications Experience in supporting Technology One software systems Experience in Local Government Class C driver s licence CORE COMPETENCIES Teamwork Participate in team-based activities and suggest improvements to team activities. Develop and implement strategies to coach and train colleagues and teams to improve workplace efficiency. GENERAL 1. This is a description of the job as it is presently constituted. Failure to maintain any licence or certificate, which is a condition of your employment, may result in demotion or termination of employment as Council is unable to guarantee your transfer to a position not requiring the said licence or certificate. 6. All employees are expected to participate in Council s Induction Program and future training opportunities to maintain a current knowledge base and provide excellent service levels for internal and external customers. 7. All employees are to actively participate in the Employee Performance Development Program. 8. All employees must work in accordance with the standards contained within Council s Code of Conduct. Failure to do so may lead to disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment. 9. All employees are encouraged to be a contributing member to the wider Burdekin Community and therefore it is required that you take up permanent residency within three months of the successful completion of your probationary period. Exemptions will only be granted at the discretion of the Chief Executive Officer. 10. All employees are to abide by Council policies, guidelines, and Operational Standards, as amended from time to time.
