Primary and Lower School Enrichment Classes - Spring 2016 January 11 May 13, 2016

MONDAYS FOOD FOR THOUGHT PreK3 Sr.K: Time 2:45 3:30 p.m. Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Food For Thought focuses on teaching children the basics of nutrition, while introducing them to delightful and healthy cuisine from around the world. The students will learn what a balanced diet really is and how to make some of their favorite dishes into healthier versions. Defining things like gluten, carbohydrates and processed foods, then discussing what is good and bad for their bodies, will help the children to make better diet choices and develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime. The chefs-in-training will make healthy home-cooked meals. They also will learn the importance of kitchen safety and proper food handling techniques, as well as responsible kitchen behavior and cleanup. Let s get cooking! Includes ingredients, materials and each student s very own cooking utensils at the end of the session. Fee: $815 PORTUGUESE AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE PreK3 Jr.K: Time 2:45 3:30 p.m. Grade 1: Time 3:30 4:30 p.m. The program is dedicated to developing literacy skills for students who already, at least, understand Portuguese (family language). Using authentic materials and contextualized exercises, the classes will offer students meaningful and interactive ways to expand their language abilities and cultural knowledge. Fee: $570 FRENCH PART DEUX Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Come explore the beauty and wonder of the French language with Mr. Garcia, the Middle School French teacher. Your child will continue to learn to speak basic French while having fun, singing songs, playing games, drawing and exploring the many fascinating facets of French culture. Students will use Smart Boards and other technology to make learning authentic and exciting. Fee: $530 READING PATCH CLUB Grades 2 3: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Be a part of history! Join Lower School teacher Mrs. Hernandez in Gulliver s first official book club. In the Reading Patch Club, students will earn patches on their lanyards as they read books, engage in group discussions, participate in hands-on activities and enjoy a variety of theme celebrations. Reading Patch Club serves the same purpose as an adult book club it becomes a vehicle for excellent conversations about books, and it offers a venue that brings the solo act of reading into a social circle. Includes books, lanyards and snacks. Fee: $595 MARTIAL ARTS PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:45 3:25 p.m. Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Offered by FFA Martial Arts, the Martial Arts Youth Enrichment program is taught by world-class coaches who specialize in developing focus, discipline, confidence, respect, manners and important self-defense skills for children. The classes are high-energy, fun and provide a healthy workout. Parents can expect their children to develop more flexibility, strength, balance and motor skills as they learn how to punch, kick, knee and elbow. Includes uniform and belt ceremony. Fee: $600

TUESDAYS NEW! BIOMEDICAL DETECTIVES Grades 3 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Biomedical Detectives students will be able to conduct many hands-on labs and activities. They will learn about medical careers and proper use of laboratory equipment. The class will focus on the biomedical engineering industry by conducting dissections, measuring vital signs, identifying fingerprints and using Vernier probes to diagnose illness, identify genetic traits, determine blood types and learn about forensic science. The students will build a prosthetic limb using the engineering design process. *All materials for this class will be provided. Fee: $570 LITTLE PICASSOS Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. They will get messy, they will have fun, they will create and they will experiment with different colors, photos, shapes, dough, drawing, painting and much more! This art class is designed to help little artists discover their inner Picassos while allowing their own unique personalities to flourish and thrive. Fee: $525 PORTUGUESE AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE Grade 3: Time: 3:00 3:50 p.m. Grade 4: Time: 4:00 4:50 p.m. The program is dedicated to developing literacy skills for students who already, at least, understand Portuguese (family language). Using authentic materials and contextualized exercises, the classes will offer students meaningful and interactive ways to expand their language abilities and cultural knowledge. Fee: $570 CHESS Grades 2 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Chess improves reasoning and focusing skills. Classes are grouped by ability and will be taught by a national chess expert and Gulliver teacher. This class is for players of all levels; students will be assigned a level after the instructor s evaluation. Fee: $510 CREATIVE MOVEMENT PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:45 3:30 p.m. This pre-ballet program is taught by Premier Dance. The structured class allows our littlest dancers to work on refining large-motor skills while developing rhythm, coordination, balance and creativity. Students will also be introduced to symbolic capabilities and dance props. Includes leotard. Dancers need to bring tights and shoes. Fee: $650 MY GYM PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:45 3:30 p.m. Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. This structured, age-appropriate class incorporates fitness, music, dance, puppets, relays, games, gymnastics, sports and other original activities. The children have fun as they exercise and gain strength, balance, coordination, agility, flexibility and social skills. The most important goal, however, is to build confidence and self-esteem so that the children can feel good about themselves and gain a jump-start on their path to health and strength. Fee: $570

WEDNESDAYS PORTUGUESE AS A HERITAGE LANGUAGE Sr.K: Time: 2:00-2:45 p.m. Grade 2: Time: 3:00 4:00 p.m. The program is dedicated to developing literacy skills for students who already, at least, understand Portuguese (family language). Using authentic materials and contextualized exercises, the classes will offer students meaningful and interactive ways to expand their language abilities and cultural knowledge. Fee: $570 NEW! COMPUTATIONAL THINKING AND CODING Grades Jr.K Sr.K: Time: 2:00 2:50 p.m. This program introduces participants to computer programming utilizing MIT s new block coding technology and Stanford University Design Thinking methodology. Participants will be programming on tablets, creating graphics interfaces and, ultimately, creating games they can play over and over again. This program will introduce repeat loops, use of decision trees and the creation of pictures with binary numbers. While writing basic computer programs, students will come to understand how variables work on objects, as well as conditionals and how they are used. This class comes with a 9-inch Android tablet that students will keep at the end of the program. Fee: $650 NEW! JUNIOR MECHATRONICS ROBOTICS Grades 1 2: Time: 3:00 4:00 p.m. Build your own robots! Learn the mechanical components of a robot. Then, learn how Bluetooth, ultrasound, microcontrollers and electronics can be used to program your robot. Students will program a robot to send sound, rotate motors as needed, detect nearby objects, work a maze, etc. Includes programmable robotic build kit with ultrasound, Bluetooth, sound and programmable microcontrollers. Fee: $700 BRICKS 4 KIDZ PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:00 2:45 p.m. Grades 1 4: Time: 3:00 3:45 p.m. Bricks 4 Kidz classes provide an extraordinary atmosphere for children, where they learn, they build, they play... with LEGO Bricks. Programs are built around proprietary model plans, designed by engineers and architects, with exciting themes such as space, construction and amusement parks. Specially designed project kits and theme-based models provide the building blocks for the Bricks 4 Kidz approach to educational play, helping kids learn through activities that engage their curiosity and creativity. Fee: $600 HIP-HOP PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:00 2:45 p.m. Grades 1 4: Time: 3:00 3:45 p.m. Taught by Premier Dance and designed for boys and girls, this hip-hop class incorporates great aerobic exercise while improving flexibility and coordination. The upbeat course will present a mix of old and new urban dance styles while teaching students to recognize rhythm. These little hip-hop dancers will be able to move with a significant sense of style and spunk. Fee: $660 SPANISH FOR LITTLE EARS PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:00 2:45 p.m. Taught by a Gulliver modern languages teacher, this program uses songs, hands-on activities, crafts and games to bring the Spanish language to our youngest students. Las pequeñas orejitas will use creativity and technology such as ipads and the Smart Board to learn basic vocabulary while having fun and pretending to visit Spanish cultures in places around the world. Fee: $525

THURSDAYS BEGINNING ENGINEERING with CODE EXPLORERS PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:45 3:30 p.m. Intro to Architecture will help the children learn the basics of the physical structural world around them. This programs combines structural engineering, art and the basics of architecture. The program includes many construction projects that will illustrate this career. Includes: Architecture Kit Fee: $535 ENGINEERING AT GULLIVER S.T.E.A.M. STUDIO Grades 3 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Students will become young engineers by learning how to apply precise logical thinking, use data to make decisions, analyze problems and build solutions in teams. Students will build and program task-oriented robots using the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 combining wheels, sensors and motors that work, move and execute engineering challenges. Students will also design and build circuits to learn the fundamentals of electricity using electronic components. Gulliver s own Mrs. Valencia teaches basic engineering principles as student-engineers work individually and in small groups to build, build, build! Fee: $570 JUNIOR ENGINEERING with CODE EXPLORERS Grades 1 2: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Learn electronics like a real electrical engineer! Learn how our technology is powered today. Learn the basics of digital electronics including the most powerful component: the transistor. Build electronic games, learn the basics to build your own radio, alarm, an electronic flying saucer, a light detector alarm, etc.. Includes: Children Electronics Breadboard Kit which is all electronic components as well as transistors. Fee: $640 CREATING WITH CLAY PreK3 Sr.K: Time: 2:45 3:20 p.m. Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. This class is a place where making a mess and getting dirty are part of being creative. The students will learn how to make ceramic pieces from wet clay using their hands, molds and clay tools. Ms. Yaslin will take the young sculptors through a series of creative and fun hand-building projects. This is not a pottery wheel class. The children will form, decorate and glaze their creations to take home. Includes all materials. Fee: $525 NEW! HANDS IN HARMONY Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Come explore the world of American Sign Language! It s never too early to learn. Our ASL children s program will teach the appropriate use of signs for communicating. Children will learn the alphabet, basic vocabulary, sentence structure and some important ASL history. The class will have a culminating project of each child glossing (ASL sentence format) and signing a favorite song or short story. This class will be a great learning experience! Fee: $525

FRIDAYS n BROADCASTING Grades 2 4: Time: 3:30 4:30 p.m. Lights, Camera, Green Screen, Action! Calling all future reporters, directors, producers, news writers, digital editors and videographers! This is our very own enrichment broadcast journalism news station. Students will have hands-on practice producing a news program. They will experience the behind-the-scenes action by learning how to research, interview and film with a green screen. They ll produce news segments, videos and commercials using Macs and editing software. Fee: $525 n JAZZ Grades 1 4: Time: 3:30 4:15 p.m. Offered by Premier Dance, this fast, energizing course allows the dancers to develop trust in their own physical capabilities while improving skills with fluidity and syncopation. The techniques of jazz dance will be introduced, and students will learn how to practice sharing and expressive dance interaction with others. This class incorporates turns, jumps and leaps while students have fun and dance to the best of Kidz Bop! Includes leotard. Dancers need to bring tights and shoes. GULLIVER SWIM SCHOOL (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday) Time: PreK3 Sr.K: 2:45 3:15 p.m.; Grades 1 4: 3:30 4:00 p.m. (Wednesday) Time: PreK3 Sr.K: 2:00 2:30 p.m.; Grades 1 4: 2:45 3:15 p.m. Gulliver Swim School, a licensed Swim America site, teaches children to swim quickly and safely. Its station method builds strong swimmers by introducing new skills while constantly reviewing those previously mastered. Gulliver swim coaches group the swimmers by skill level and emphasize water safety. The teaching pool is heated, so students can swim year-round. Includes t-shirt. Fee: Mondays $325; Tuesdays $393; Wednesdays $393; Thursdays $393; Fridays $325 YOUTH SPORTS Sr.K Grade 5 This popular program works to develop our students into athletes at a young age. Students are taught specific fundamentals, principles of sportsmanship, fair play and teamwork. Great emphasis is placed on the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Winning is not the goal, but rather the experience of wholesome competition and the development of healthy minds and bodies. The overall aim of the program is for each child to enjoy the learning experience. In Youth Sports, everybody plays, everybody wins. IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Enrichment and Youth Sports classes are offered to Gulliver students on a semester basis during the school year. The Enrichment spring term begins on Monday, January 11, 2016, and concludes on Friday, May 13, 2016 (17 weeks). Enrichment classes will not meet during the week of March 21-25 (spring recess). Online registration will open on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, and will close during the winter recess. Registration will reopen when we return on January 4, 2016. Classes that have not reached minimum enrollment may be cancelled. Classes will be held on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. Gulliver Enrichment Programs has a no-refund and no-change policy. Makeup classes will be given for cancellations only at the instructor s and the director s discretion. No credit will be issued for classes missed due to illness, student conduct, holidays or inclement weather. For Gulliver Swim School, there are no refunds, credits or makeups for missed classes due to reasons out of Gulliver Swim School s control, including, but not limited to, lightning and severe weather conditions. Children are brought to the Academy South Playground at their dismissal time and are picked up by their instructor for each class. Parents may pick up their children at the classroom at the end of each class and sign out with the Enrichment teacher. If not, the children will be brought to Extended Care to be picked up there by their parents or by bus service. Extended Care charges and policies apply after 3:30 p.m. As during the school day, if you would like to speak with an Enrichment instructor or if your child needs to leave early, please contact the Extended Care office. Please do not interrupt classes. All Gulliver rules and policies in the Student-Parent Handbook apply to Enrichment Programs.
