New This Year, We are pleased to announce a new addition to our facility this year. A brand new kids in the kitchen section will offer hands-on actual cooking and baking activities for your children. As the little chefs prepare some of their favorite dishes, they will learn basic culinary measurement and math skills, the origins of foods and healthy eating strategies. Creativity in the kitchen is a proven way for children to explore their world using all their senses. On the next pages you ll find the programs and options for our school year. 3 GETTING TO KNOW US Aleph Bet Preschool is Richmond s premiere Jewish preschool for children of all Jewish backgrounds. Our Montessori inspired curriculum and low child to-teacher ratio enables us to nurture every child s unique rhythm of development, inspiring confidence through independence. Aleph Bet s homelike setting and warm, loving environment ensures a gentle transition from home to school for new preschoolers. The calm, soothing atmosphere provides children the necessary feeling of safety and security to explore, learn and have fun. The staff at Aleph Bet is second to none. Their devotion to each child is paralleled with the required skill and patience to teach self-control and respect for others in a group. The broad, balanced and exciting curriculum offers endless opportunities for intellectual, physical, social and emotional growth and development. At Aleph Bet Preschool Judaism is not just a subject. Woven into activities throughout the day is a vibrant Jewish component, which not only teaches the children about Shabbat, Jewish holidays and Jewish customs, but also instills a sense of belonging, pride and excitement in being part of the Jewish people.

4 The Montessori Approach Maria Montessori was an Italian physician and educator. Born in 1870, she developed her method of education over a 45-year period of directly observing and working with children. Her lifelong study of the child's mind revealed its unique ability to absorb life skills and knowledge. The child's sensitivity to the environment is the basis for the Montessori Method, which places a great deal of emphasis on preparing an environment where children can follow and fulfill their inner needs through concrete experiences. It is a goal of the Montessori education to encourage independence in a child. We do this by offering numerous opportunities to try new tasks. These tasks are called daily life activities and include learning to dress themselves, choosing which materials they want to use, unpacking their backpacks on their own, etc. When the children are able to do things for themselves there is an increase in their self-belief, self-confidence and self-esteem that will carry on throughout their lives. Care, love, attention and a proper learning environment are crucial to help the child learn. Providing them with a fun and safe learning environment is vital to the purpose of Montessori education. Children are people with needs and wants of their own. They differ from each other and must be respected. The structure of the Montessori learning environment involves the use of many materials with which the child may work independently. Dr. Montessori scientifically developed these materials, with distinct purposes and defining characteristics. The carefully planned Montessori materials help develop a child s natural curiosity. Children explore and manipulate the materials with their hands, creating a total sensory experience for acquiring information and knowledge. In the Montessori classroom, children work at their own pace and at their own level of development. The noncompetitive atmosphere allows the child to be naturally curious in the task he or she is performing, thereby making the experience pleasurable. Rather than "teach" a child through formal learning methods, the Montessori teacher "guides" the child through the learning process. This encourages them to explore the materials and reach their own conclusions. The Montessori teacher prepares the environment. She/he functions as the catalyst agent and exemplar for the child's development and growth. Dr. Montessori stated that any unnecessary help given to the child hinders his growth. She said never help a child with a task at which he feels he can succeed on his own." The freedom that is given to a child in the Montessori classroom is counterbalanced by the "inner discipline" which develops. She becomes aware not only of her freedom, but of her corresponding responsibility to herself and others. This is the core of Dr. Montessori's philosophy. The aim of Montessori is to develop the whole child, intellectually, physically, and socially. The teacher strives to encourage and guide the child and to help him achieve a balanced, happy, aware personality that will enhance his life as an adult.

5 Preschool Year: Wednesday, Sep 3, 2014 to May 29, 2015 Orientation (student with parents): Tuesday, Sep 2 from 9:00-10:30 Winter Break: Dec 22, 2014 Jan 2, 2015 Spring Break: TBA OUR PROGRAMS Imma & Me For mom, dad or caregiver and their children ages 3 months to 2 years. Imma & Me is an excellent and effective first social group for toddlers, helping them make the transition to preschool. It is also a perfect opportunity for moms and dads to meet other young parents and share their child-rearing experiences. Program activities include: Open play, songs, large and small motor movement activities, breakfast buffet, arts and crafts and much more. Meets on Tuesday mornings from 9:00-11:00. Preschool Two-year-olds Choose from 2, 3 or 5 day program, from 9:00-12:30 or 9:00-3:00 Our two-year-old program is designed to allow each child to explore and be actively engaged in a rich environment of developmentally appropriate activities. At this stage, children need to be given more independence and every success of their own gives them a sense of accomplishment and helps to develop their selfesteem. Daily activities include table tasks, circle time, art, outdoor play, Hebrew group time, music and movement and lunch. Children who stay from 12:30 to 3:00 have naptime and then enjoy additional outdoor play. Three to Five-year-olds For Three-year-olds you may choose 3 or 5 day program from 9:00-12:30, 9:00-1:30 or 9:00-3:00. For Four-Five-year olds, you may choose a five day program from 9:00-1:30 or 9:00-3:00. Our three-to five-year-old program is designed to give a child a strong foundation for his or her future school and life experiences. Our first and foremost priority is to provide a loving and personal environment that allows the children to explore their world in a natural and pressure-free environment. We provide many opportunities for gross and fine motor skill development, specifically geared to build independence and preparatory activities for kindergarten. We expose the children to a vast array of subjects in order to enrich their vocabulary, their knowledge, their love for learning and their Judaism. We also closely guide children through their social interactions. We develop their skills through grace and courtesy lessons and social skill-building activities in order to foster confidence and kindness in each and every child. Daily activities include choice of table tasks, group time, Montessori work time activities, outdoor play, lunch and Hebrew group time. At 12:30, the children enjoy additional work time and story time. Activities from 1:30-3:00 include outdoor play, snack and organized group activities. Child Care Early Care: Available from 8:00am 9:00am. After Care: Available from 3:00-5:00 excluding Fridays (with sufficient enrollment) As-Needed Child Care For those who are not signed up for child care and would like to use this service on an asneeded basis. The fee for this service is $10.00 an hour or partial hour. Second child in the family pays $5.00/hour. If possible, please call a day in advance for availability.

9 Please read before signing Withdrawing my child from preschool/child care: I understand that should I withdraw my child from Aleph Bet Preschool and/or Child Care after June 1, 2014, I will be responsible for payment for three months of service Sept, Oct. and Nov. I understand that should I withdraw my child from Preschool and/or Child Care after August 31, 2014, I will be responsible for payment for three months of service from last date of attendance. To withdraw my child, I understand that I must submit a change of enrollment form to the office. A change of enrollment form will be included in your handbook or you may request one from the office. Late Pick-Up Fees I agree I will pick up my child on time from preschool and/or aftercare. I agree that if I am late (10 minutes after the scheduled pick up time), I will pay an additional fee of $5.00 for the first 10 minutes and $1.00 per minute after that. Parents will receive one verbal warning. After that, parents will be assessed a fee for late pick-up. AS NEEDED Child Care Fees For those who are not signed up for Child Care (Early/After Care) and would like to use this service on an as-needed, space available basis, the fee for this service is $10.00 an hour or partial hour. Second child in the family pays $5.00/hour or partial hour.
