Each studio-based course runs for three weeks, meeting from 9:30 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday. Registration is open to everyone interested in an intensive art experience. Portfolios are not required. Residential boarding option is also available. 5 Creativity Starts Here... The Cranbrook Summer art Institute Cranbrook, which combines some of the country s greatest artistic and architectural treasures on a campus of remarkable beauty, is the ideal place for your summer studies. Now in our sixth year, the Summer Art Institute simulates the college experience by utilizing the rich resources available at Cranbrook Academy of Art -- one of the most innovative graduate schools in the United States for fine art, design and architecture. A broad selection of courses taught by Academy artists and alumni offers the perfect opportunity to explore the studio arts for serious college-bound students as well as those with a simple curiosity about the creative process. Each three-week course meets from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Classes take place in the Academy s art studios or Central Media Lab, and feature demonstrations and instruction by practicing artists and designers. Students may enroll for one, two or all three sessions. Day trips to area galleries and professional studios are an integral part of the curriculum. Each session concludes with an exhibition of student work in the Forum Gallery at Cranbrook Academy of Art.

6 Highlights of the CRanbrook Summer Art Institute Experience Location Cranbrook Summer Art Institute is located at the heart of the landmark Cranbrook Educational Community on the beautiful campus of Cranbrook Academy of Art. The grounds are resplendent with inspiring art and architecture created by some of the world s most famous artists and architects of the modern era including: Eliel and Eero Saarinen, Carl Milles, Rafael Moneo, Mark di Suvero and many others. Intensive Study Summer Art Institute participants are enrolled in one intensive three-week class per session representing 90 hours of focused study. Classes meet six hours a day, Monday through Friday, for three weeks. Exhibitions Each session culminates in an exhibition of student work in Cranbrook Academy of Art s Forum Gallery. Family members and the general public are invited to a reception to celebrate the accomplishments of each student.

9 Instructors Graduate students and alumni of Cranbrook Academy of Art lead most classes. Academytrained artists have attended the country s only independent two-year MFA graduate program in fine art, architecture and design. The Academy is ranked as one of the top five graduate art schools in the nation by the US News and World Report. Individual Attention The average instructor-to-student ratio is 1:8. Classes are limited to a maximum of 15 students, so instructors have time in each six-hour day to connect one-on-one with each student. Field trips Every class goes on a field trip in the second week. Typically, several classes go together to tour area art galleries. Trips may also include visits to artist studios and/or businesses that specialize in a relevant topic for the class. Diverse Friendships Last year the Summer Art Institute enrolled students from 15 different states and three countries as well as from throughout Michigan. General fun Although the program offers an intensive art experience, there is still time to unwind and relax. Every Friday is Pizza Friday, when everyone gathers for lunch and games. Students are invited to put on a talent show as well. On hot days, improvisational water games are known to occur.

10 A Typical Day at the Summer Art Institute 9:00-9:30 am Gather with friends to socialize before class. 9:30-10:30 am Your instructor introduces the day s projects and conducts a demonstration. 10:30-11:30 am Studio time to work on art. 11:30 am - noon Review time with your instructor and other students. Noon 12:45 pm Lunch. 12:45 2:00 pm Studio time to work on art. 2:00 3:00 pm Kick back with a sketchbook assignment or another project. 3:00 3:30 pm Presentation time.

13 Optional: The Boarding Program Live-on campus and experience all that Cranbrook has to offer. The option to board includes extended studio hours for making art, and evening recreational activities that include swimming, tennis, hiking, and the use of the sports facilities, as well as field trips on the weekend. Residents are accommodated in the dormitories of Cranbrook Academy of Art and will be assigned to either two- or threeperson rooms on a first-come, first-served basis and according to availability. Boarders may also request to be housed with friends. Meals are provided in the campus dining halls at Cranbrook and include a full selection of healthy meals. Emphasis in the boarding program is placed on responsible behavior and safety. Cranbrook is supported by a student-to-supervisor ratio of 5 to 1, plus a 24/7 full-time security staff. Boys and girls are housed in separate buildings with an enforced curfew each evening.

Enrollment is guaranteed only when a deposit or full payment is received. Registration is open to anyone who wishes to take a class. A portfolio is not required.
