1 KIPLING SCHOOL AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT FALL 2015 CLASS DESCRIPTIONS AND DATES WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 17 Monday 11 classes, no class 9/14, 10/12, 11/23 STEM Explorers by Noggin Builders (Grades K 1) Explore hands on, real world projects in S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) while challenging your problem solving and creative thinking with fun, hands on projects. Design a roller coaster, program a robot, investigate the bounce of a ball, build your own flinker or create a rubberband powered car. These are just some of the challenges we will dig into in S.T.E.M. Explorers. Instructor: Noggin Builders Thunderbolts Flag Football (Grades 1 4) Join us this fall for another fun season of flag football with Coach Steve and crew. We have a blast learning all about football in a safe environment. We team up with our buddies to play against kids from the other 3 Deerfield schools on Friday evenings. Every participant will receive a jersey as well. Instructor: Fit 4 Kids Newspaper Club (Grades 1 5) Crafting a story that catches the eye is the heart of journalism. This club helps budding reporters and editors grasp this rule by building a newspaper from the ground up. Staff brainstorm story ideas in an open, collective environment write, edit, and layout the stories. Since creativity should not go unnoticed, be assured that copies "hot off the presses" will be distributed to the entire school to enjoy. Instructor: Xplore Clubs Cheerleading (Grades K 5) Students will learn cheers as well as poms choreography weekly in this upbeat class. They will learn 3 4 new cheers weekly, work on form, as well as add on to their poms dance routine. We will work with the after school sports programs to have the girls cheer at a game or all school event during the session. The last day of the class will be a parent watch day where they will do a short performance to show off their new talents. Kids Beginning Keyboard (Grades 1 5) Get ready for an intergalactic, out of this world keyboard lesson experience! Our 4 fun martians, Brubar, Bebe, Bjorn and Stan will teach students notes, chords, fun songs and more in a setting tailored for group instruction. Fee includes book fee. Instructor: Guitar Fundamentals Page 1 of 6
2 Tuesday 12 classes, no class 10/13, 11/24 Chess Scholar (Grades K 5) No previous knowledge of chess is necessary. Each class will consist of a fun interactive teaching period and guided practice time. Both new and returning participants are welcome and will get to the next level under the guidance of an experienced Chess Scholars coach. There will also be a chess competition with prizes towards the end of the session! Instructor: Learning Means Fun Sports Mix (Grades K 2) Sports Mix will allow its participants to get a mix of all the major sports along with many popular games. Basketball, soccer, flag football and ice less hockey will then be mixed with extreme versions of dodge ball, capture the flag, gaga and many other games that will keep the players always moving and constantly in the "MIX!" Coaches will be on hand to make sure the games run smoothly, everyone is safe and having fun and also to help the players maximize their potential in all of the games we play. This way our athletes can decide what sports they really like and excel at. Instructor: Rookies Sports Amazing Minds (Grades 1 3) Calling all first through third graders! How would you like to go on an incredible journey with Amazing Minds after school? Explore topics such as countries near and far, land and water animals, science experiments, Native Americans and more!! Build a New York landmark collection filled with souvenirs, learn how to make water change color and get your fingerprints taken. Learn to use tools that help you solve problems such as calculators, magnifying glasses, microscopes, tape measures and scales. Engage in science experiments where you dissect owl pellets, wear prism glasses, and make raisins bounce. Top it all off with exciting topic related take home prizes such as rubber snakes and shark teeth. Come and exercise your brain with us after school! Extraordinary Kids (Kindergarten) Enrich your child's kindergarten year with an educational adventure! Extraordinary Kids emphasizes fun and creativity, challenges curious minds, enhances learning through hands on exploration, encourages critical thinking and establishes a life long love of learning. Each session will explore several thematic units that will be integrated into all areas of the curriculum: science, math, language arts, social studies, geography, and art. Kids will discover what happens to your food after you eat it (Human body), how to draw a picture using invisible ink and turn crystals into a bouncing ball (Monsters), how kids live in Africa (Africa), how to be a junior paleontologist and find fossils (Dinosaurs) and much much more. Instructor: Extraordinary Kids Boys Break Dance (Grades K 5) Under the creative direction of skilled Chicago Loves Dance break dancers, students will learn choreography and poses, show off their creativity in free style sessions and more. Chicago Loves Dance runs on the philosophy that dance should open your child s creative abilities and be FUN! We pride ourselves on teaching the self esteem and Page 2 of 6
3 socialization needed in everyday life through the activity of dance and performance. The last day of the class will be a parent watch day where they will do a short performance to show off their new talents. Wednesday 12 classes, no class 9/23, 11/11, 11/25 Mad Science (Grades 1 5) Mad Science is back with one of our favorite series of fun, spectacular, hands on science experiments! Some of the cool, new, hands on science topics will include Detective Science, Movie Effects, Machines and more. Each young scientist will be able to make some fun take home projects too, including a fun movie effect, a propeller driven car and many others. All materials are included and instructors are provided by Mad Science of Northern Illinois. Love to Bead (Grades 1 5) This is a fun filled class where the children will learn various techniques of bead weaving and wirework. They will make necklaces, bracelets, watches, jewelry boxes and much more. All the projects will be finished for the children by the instructor until they are able to do it themselves. Everyone beads at their own level. The materials used are high quality so the students will enjoy their artwork for years to come. Instructor: Ros Lotzof Pizza Power (Grades K 5) Who doesn t like pizza? Breakfast pizza, lunch pizza, snack pizza, dinner pizza, dessert pizza. So many yummy pizzas you can create. Each week you will make a different pizza to take home and amaze your family and friends. After one taste you can smile and proudly say, I made this! Instructor: Sandy Foreman Chicago Fire Soccer Skills (Grades 1 3) The Chicago Fire Soccer Skills class is a fun, energetic soccer program run by professional coaches from the Chicago Fire North Soccer Club. Whether your child is new to soccer or has already developed a love of the game, our age appropriate curriculum will allow all players to have fun developing their soccer skills. The fundamental techniques of dribbling, passing, shooting and defending will be taught during skill based activities and small sided scrimmages. Instructor: Chicago Fire PE Games (Grades 4 5) Come to this class and play your favorite PE Games after school. Games are chosen by students in the class. 4 Thursday 14 classes, no class 11/26 Kids Beginning Guitar (Grades 1 5) Get ready for an intergalactic, out of this world guitar lesson experience! Our 4 fun martians, Brubar, Bebe, Bjorn and Stan will teach students notes on the guitar, guitar tablature, chords, fun songs and more in a setting tailored for group instruction. Students will take turns playing melody and chords together, with their instructor and each other to maximize the group experience. Fee includes book fee. Instructor: Guitar Fundamentals Game On Sports (Grades K 2) Game On! Girls Sports Academy Presents Sports of All Sorts 4 Girls. Join us as we EXPLORE and LEARN a different sport each week. We may cover basketball, soccer, tennis, softball, lacrosse, volleyball and more in the most FUN, nurturing and positive environment! From our years dedicated to working with girls, we have the unique games and expertise to help each of your daughters to grow as an athlete and a person. As always, attention to teamwork, sportsmanship, self esteem, respect, giving and goal setting are incorporated into our program as well. On your Mark, Get Set, Game On! Instructor: Sunshine Crafts Explore Legos (Grades K 3) Let your imagination run wild with over 10,000 pieces of Lego! Join Xplore Legos to build unique projects each week with Lego bricks and elements. Each week a new theme will be presented promoting creativity, teamwork, cooperation, patience, and problem solving skills. Instructor: Xplore Clubs Page 4 of 6
5 Friday 12 classes, no class 10/16, 11/27, 12/18 Let s Build It! (Grades 1 5) This class takes a hands on approach to engineering, allowing students to directly engage with basic engineering concepts through a variety of fun and educational activities. Students will improve their problem solving, math, and physics skills all while engaging in exciting building projects. Each trimester long unit will focus on a specific area of engineering, like bridge building, transportation, energy, and electricity. Instructor: Learning Means Fun Tech Stars (Grades3 5) ULTIMATE CODING LAB: Minecraft Coding AND Python Coding (Grades 3 5) Want to take your Coding expertise to the next level? Join us this fall as we work on TWO awesome Coding platforms: Minecraft AND Python. Minecraft Coding will put YOU in charge as you learn via both icon AND text based syntax coding to program turtles to craft for you using the ComputerCraft Mod. About halfway through, we ll switch platforms to Python: a powerful, expressive programming language that's easy to learn and fun to use! We ll guide you through the basics as you experiment with unique (and often hilarious) programming puzzles designed to stretch your brain and strengthen your understanding of this new language. Please note: Prior experience with Minecraft is REQUIRED for this program and students will be working in pairs throughout. Instructor: Computer Explorers Karate (Grades K 5) The Focus Martial Arts Karate Program helps students increase their confidence and teaches them to work towards the goals they set. Our karate program will teach your child how to respect themselves and others. The children learn karate in a safe, supervised environment and our trained instructors keep them motivated and wanting more. We will also teach them skills in self-defense and interpersonal communication that will last a lifetime. The children in our program get better grades, make more friends, and work towards their black belts, giving them more confidence in all they do. Instructor: Focus Martial Arts *** THERE WILL BE NO KARATE CLASS ON 11/20*** Sticky Fingers Cooking Class (Grades K 5) THYME to TURNIP the BEET on what kids eat! Let your child release their inner chef! Students will prepare and eat healthy, globally inspired recipes all while learning to cook in a fun, engaging and real world way! Our chefs will reinforce kitchen skills associated with our weekly recipes and learn about each area of cooking terminology, foods and fun nutrition facts (even a few bad jokes!). We will orally practice our numbers, measurements, work with child safe cooking utensils and fresh ingredients all while cooking! New recipes are created each class with our master Sticky Fingers Cooking Chef Instructor. Mix + Measure + Chopping Skills, Oh My! Let your child release their inner chef! Sticky Fingers Cooking offers young chefs the chance to explore exciting tastes (all seasonal and as local as possible), master culinary skills (that they can put to use in family kitchens) and nourish their bodies and minds. Our enrichment classes feature a healthy recipe, emphasize safety and skill building, and encourage environmental awareness in an engaging way. Progressively, children will build Page 5 of 6
6 upon skills learned from previous classes and by the end if the session, they will have acquired a repertoire of talent to help you at home in the kitchen! We provide all of the tools, ingredients and instruction needed to cook up a fun, delicious and healthy (sssh!) snack each week. Our online recipe collection is included as well for each chef for future family cooking fun! All of our Sticky Fingers trained cooking instructors, share lifetime love of cooking and a passion for cooking with kids! We have Montessori school teachers, culinary school student teachers, summer camp directors, preschool teachers, catering chefs and even graduates from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris on our talented team of cooking instructors.
