1 Pelham YMCA Home School PE Credits The Pelham YMCA is now offering a variety of PE credits for your children. We will be meeting 2x a week for an hour and half each day for the current semester in 2014 starting January 7 th -May 15 th. We will observe all holidays and days off according to the Shelby County School District calendar. Each semester will be the equivalent of.5 credits. Below are listed details and more information. For questions please contact Suzanna Weimer, our Healthy Lifestyles Director, at or sweimer@ymcabham.org. Class Schedule: Tuesday and Thursday 1:00-1:15 Check In & Warm Up 1:15-2:15 Physical Education 2:15-2:30 Free Play and Check Out Registration and Payment: Participants may or may not be members of the Pelham YMCA in order to participate in the Home School program. Participants should be registered for the program before attending their first class. Payment is due on or before the first day of class. Fees cover the cost of equipment and teacher used in the program. Price $200 for Member and Non-members Registration fee $40/family no refund non transferable Minimum of 6 people in each program to make: Water o Swim lessons, stroke technique, water games and sports etc. (all ages) Sports o Volleyball, basketball and soccer (all ages) Fitness o Weight training (machines/ free weights) and sample aerobics classes (ages 10 and up)
2 Sign In and Sign Out: Each participant should be signed in by their parent on the attendance sheet located at the front desk when they enter into the building between 1-1:15pm. Likewise, each participant must be signed out by their parent when leaving the program. All participants will be dismissed and must be signed out from the program at 2:30pm. Late Arrivals: If a participant arrives after 1:15, THE PARENT MUST CHECK THE PARTICIPANT IN WITH THE INSTRUCTOR. Early Sign Out: If a participant needs to leave before 2:30pm, the parent should check the child out with the instructor. Participants will not be allowed to leave their group early without the parent being present. Dress: Participants should wear clothes that are comfortable, appropriate and suitable for exercise. Do Wear -T-shirt -Gym shorts or sweat pants - Gym shoes - One piece swimsuit (for swimming program only) - Long hair pulled back with rubber band or barrette Don t Wear -Jeans or other long pants (no snaps, buttons, zippers) - Cropped shirts - Dresses -Sandals, flip-flops, dress shoes, boots or open toe shoes - Hats in the building Injury/Illness: If a participant is sick or ill they should not be brought to class. If a participant is injured or becomes ill during class, the parent will be called immediately. Staff members are certified in First Aid, CPR and AED. Immediate action will be taken. Question/Concerns: Questions and concerns about the program should be addresses to Suzanna Weimer, the Healthy Lifestyle Director. If you need to speak to the department head of the program or an instructor about your child, please do so before or after class.
3 Fitness Syllabus Course Description: This course is designed to teach proper workout etiquette, technique and form for machine and free weight exercises, proper warm up and cool down with stretching exercises, core strength, reps, sets, and proper weight for each exercise and a sample of aerobics classes such as Yoga, Spin, cardio classes, muscle works classes and more. This is for children ages 10 and up. 1. To teach correct technique and form on the equipment and free weights 2. To ensure safety while working out at all times 3. To progress to being able to work out with parent supervision or by themselves (dependent on age) 4. Build confidence, self-esteem and self-image for each participant 5. Understand the benefits and different types of exercises January Week 1- Workout room etiquette, warm up/cool down, introduce cardio equipment and stretches Week 2- Workout room etiquette, warm up/cool down, introduce cardio equipment, stretches and reps/set/duration of exercise Week 3-Body weight exercises and learn about the heart and its functions Week 4- Body weight exercises and learn about the heart and its functions February Week 1-Eagle line machines and learn upper body muscles Week 2- Eagle line machine and learn upper body muscles Week 3-Hoist machines and cable machines and learn lower body muscles Week 4-Hoist machines and cable machines and learn lower body muscles March Week 1- Introduction to basic free weight exercises and review all muscles Week 2-Free weight exercises and review all muscles Week 3- Functional fitness with fitness toys and review all muscles Week 4- Spring Break April Week 1- Functional fitness with fitness toys and learn about the different energy systems Week 2-aerobics classes and learn about the different energy systems Week 3-aerobics classes and apply exercises to muscles being worked Week 4-aerobics classes and apply exercises to muscles being worked 1 session- aerobics class and apply exercises to muscles being worked May Week 1-TBA Week 2-TBA 1 session-tba
4 Swimming Syllabus Course Description: This course is designed to help build a good foundation of current knowledge and practices associated with Beginning Swimming. This course will increase one s ability to make wise decisions with regard to Beginning Swimming which has many documented health related benefits. 1. To help participants learn to be safe when they are in, on or around the water. 2. To help participants to feel comfortable in the water. 3. Give participants success with fundamental skills 4. To build on skills by providing additional guidance and practice 5. To learn organization rules, strategies, and safety considerations pertaining to aquatics.
